About The Author

Edgar Allan Poe was born in 1809 in Boston. Because of abandonment and death of his parents, he moved to the Allan family in Virginia.

Afterwards, he attended the University of Virginia, and published 2 books of poetry before he was 20. Surprisingly, he had trouble selling The Tell Tale Heart.

He moved in with his aunt and cousin in Baltimore.

He is famous for writing works such as The Tell-Tale Heart, The Pit and the Pendulum, Annabel Lee, and The Raven.

His wife, Virginia, died in 1847, and Poe eventually died in 1849.

Now, the Tale

The Tell-Tale Heart is about a man who thinks he is a sane man, but is clearly driven that way by the old man because of his vulture-like eye .

Each night for a week plus one, he opens the door to the old man’s bedroom.

He watches him for one hour each night with the intent to kill.

Because the eye isn’t visible for the time, he couldn’t commit the murder.

However, on the eighth night, a ray of light strikes the old man’s eye.

And then…

GET OVER HERE!!!

The narrator kills the old man in cold blood, by smothering him in his own bed.

He buries him under the floorboards, proceeding to destroy the evidence.

Because of the old man’s scream, the police investigates the scene.

The narrator proceeds as planned, taking the yelp as his own, but then, he hears a heartbeat.

Due to his illness of acute sensing, he determines it was the beat of the old man’s heart.

It beats faster and louder, making him reach his breaking point.

Driven by the guilt of the beat, he confesses in an insane manner.

He brings them to the site of the burial, and gets arrested.

Why This Is Poe’s Best Work This is a perfect example of the Macabre

style of writing. The grim atmosphere is evident, there is death and symbols of it.

The suspense that Poe installs in this literary work is clearly there. It hooks you into the story, and it delivers.

Though his famous works of literature defined the characteristics of today’s horror, The Tell-Tale Heart was, in my opinion, the greatest and most influential out of them.
