About the University of Toronto Libraries’ central library systemTheUniversityofTorontoLibraries(UTL)arerightlyreferredtoasanationaltreasure.Wearethe largestacademiclibrarysysteminthecountryandthethirdlargestinNorthAmerica.
The librarysystemisadministrativelycomplex.Thecentral librarysystemincludes13 librariesandvariouscentralservicesadministeredbytheUniversityChiefLibrarianLarryAlford.Thisstrategicplandefinestheprioritiesforthecentrallibrarysystemoverthenextfiveyears.
The central library system works in partnership with 31 other libraries that operate independently inservicetotheirconstituentsacrossallthreeUniversityofTorontocampuses.Together,allUniversityofTorontolibraries provide collections and services that inspire discovery and engage inquiring minds within theUniversityofTorontocommunityandbeyond.

researchlibrariesglobally,isanessentialpartnerinadvancingknowledgecreationattheUniversityofToronto.OurinternationalreputationasacentreforresearchattractsleadingscholarstotheUniversity.Differentiatedfromourpeersbythebreadthandscopeofourcollections,weareuniquelypositionedtopreservetheschol-arshipofthepast,andopenopportunitiesfortransformativediscoveryintothefuture.
Ourplanbuildsonourreputationforexcellence.Aswelooktothenextfiveyears,weaimtobecomethepartnerofchoicefortheUniversity’sworldclassresearcherswhoimpacttheworldthroughthefurtheringofknowledgediscoveryandthedevelopmentofnewideas.
Inimplementingourplan,thecentrallibrarysystemwillbebuildingonasolidfoundationofachievements,realizedthroughtheUTLSteppingUpplanof2004–2010.Wehaveincreasedourresearchcollectionsinbothtraditionalandnewareasofscholarship,andhaveacquiredanumberofhistoricallysignificantpieceswithtremendousresearchvalueforbothlocalandinternationalscholars.Ourphysicalspaceshavebeengreatlyen-hancedthroughforward-thinkingrenovationstotheGersteinReadingRoom,theOISELibrary,andRobartsLibrary.Ourinformationserviceshavesteadilyadvancedtomeettheneedsofourfacultyandstudents,andwehavecollaboratedwithcolleaguesbothwithintheinstitutionandmorebroadlyinthelibraryandarchivescommunitiestoenhanceourabilitytodeliverservicesofthehighestquality.
Thisisanexcitingtimeforlibrariesasitisclearthattheinformationandhighereducationenvironmentswillcontinuetoevolverapidlyoverthenextfiveyears.Wewillrespondtothechangingneedsofourscholarsbybecomingalaboratoryforinnovation,adriverofcollaboration,andagatewaytothecultural,scientificandhis-toricalrecord.Wewillcontinuetoberecognizedasapreeminentresearchcentreforscholarsaroundtheworld.
Toachieveourambitions,wehavedevelopedaplanthatoutlinesfourkeyprioritiesinthecomingyears.Ourchoicesarefocusedonservingtheneedsofresearchers.
• We will grow our world class collections, expanding our strengths in both traditional andemergingdirectionsinscholarship.
• Wewillprovideinnovativeservices and spacesthatinspirethegenerationofideasandbuildasenseofcommunity.
• Wewillstrengthenourrelationshipswithourmanystakeholders,andengagedynamicallywiththecommunityofresearchersbothlocallyandabroad.
• Wewillachievethesetasksthroughcarefulstewardshipofourresources,andtheexpertknowl-edgeofourexcellentstaff.

Thisplanistheresultofsubstantiveconsultationsthattookplacethroughthe2012–2013academicyear.TheStrategicPlanningSteeringCommitteeconsultedbroadlywiththeUniversityofTorontocommunityoffac-ulty,studentsandstaff;librarystaffinboththecentralsystemandinourpartnerlibrariesonallthreecampuses;andwithourpeersbothlocallyandabroadinthelargerlibraryandarchivescommunities.Wearegratefultothehundredsoffaculty,students,staffandcolleagueswhotookthetimetosendemails,talkwithus,respondtosurveys,participateinfocusgroups,submitreports,andwhoagreedtobeinterviewedfortheirexpertise.ThisplanisenrichedbythemanyvoicesthatcarepassionatelyabouttheUniversityofTorontoLibraries.
Wearealsogratefultothemanypeoplewhoprovidedsageadviceandsharedtheirskillsthroughtheplanningprocess.Inparticular,Ms.HelenLasthiotakisofferedguidanceaboutplanningwithintheUniversityofTorontocontext.Ms.ShereeDrummond,ProfessorGlenJones,ProfessorRhondaMcEwenandMr.MichaelRidleyloanedtheirconsiderableexpertisetotheStrategicPlanningSpeakerSeriesforUTLstaff.Ms.VickiWhitmellablysteeredusthroughtheselectionofthethemeswhichframedourconsultationprocess.OlesyaFalenchuk,Ph.D. and Monique Herbert, Ph.D. and their team expertly managed data collection and analysis for theproject.Ms.JosieFung,Ms.JenniferRielandMs.StefanieSchramskillfullyguidedtheCommitteetodevelopstrategicchoicecascadesbasedontheframeworkdevelopedbyProfessorRogerMartinattheRotmanSchoolofManagement.Ms.LauraAndersonprovidedeffectiveproject support to thePlanUTLcommittee.Alloftheseindividuals,andmanyothers,helpedguideourdecisionmakingtofocusthecentrallibrarysystemonasuccessfulpathforward.
