President’s Leaf

by Joe Pileggi, President, Almaden Valley Rotary Club

Joe

Dear Friends, Well our speaker did not show up today but we had a treat. Our own Bob Dolci and Ken Wadors took up the slack and told us a little bit about whom they are and what they do. Who needs speakers anyway? The Day at the A’s is coming up and we now have tickets. Let’s have a great time and help Angie with the tailgate. I was thinking today about the new Rotary slogan “Rotary Shares”, looking out I saw a good bit of fellowship and sharing going on. We are what that slogan is all about. Well our fine master Mr. Greg C was off again for another bi-monthly vacation. Who fines the Fine Master? Kathy B does. Wait till next week! Speaking of Kathy B she got the club’s attention with a whistle only a coach could do. I may get rid of the bell. Well got to go. Keep sharing Rotary and bring a friend.

Pledge Now! As immediate past president, Mel Bandanza has the privilege of being this year’s Rotary Foundation Chairman. As members of Rotary International, we are all expected to contribute a minimum of $100 per year to Rotary Foundation. However, Mel encourages you to become a “double-sustainer” by making a $200 donation. Besides making you an international celebrity in the Rotary world, it will give you a warm fuzzy feeling to have helped Rotary do its good work. To make it easy, Mel passed out pledge slips so we can pledge now and pay later. If you get your pledge in ASAP, you can be recognized by the District Governor at his visit to our club in August. Great job, Mel!

Angie Hassler, Communications Director, is looking for interesting human interest stories about Rotarians or their families. Contact Angie.

Shark Fest

Paul Uenaka is working way ahead to line up the next Sharks Fest. So far, he has several possible dates including January 21, 2008. Stay tuned.

Day at the A’s Ken Tavernier still has tickets for the Day at the A’s, but they’re going fast. See Ken or Mel Bandanza. The word is that there will be an excellent tailgate party. The date is August 4th.

The Winner Paul Venezio won first place at the Texas Holdem’ tournament at Bay 101. Almaden Valley Rotary won 4 of the top 5 places.

Back-Up Finemistress Kathy Burgett

Kathy filled in for the missing Greg Consentino.

Ken Wadors – At the All-Star Football Game, Ken and crew started putting up banners, followed by Ken Tavernier’s team. Even though Ken W. is the newbie at this, his team wanted Ken T.’s team to move their banners to match theirs. This resulted in the “Battle of the Kens” or “Banner Wars.” Paul Consentino added that there was no Old Republic banner at the tailgate party and the Allstate Banner was upside down having been pulled down by a Farmer’s agent. Kathy said, “$10 to all y’all,” (Ken, Ken and Paul).

Roger Hassler – Kathy presented Roger with a check that he had made out for baseball tickets but forgotten to sign. $5 Paul Venezio – The poker champ explained how he won about $3,500 for the Endowment with a pair of queens. $5 John Guisto – The hard working cheerleaders ran out of bottled water causing Kathy to have to go buy some. $5 Paul Uenaka – Paul is apparently now a go-cart racer. He was supposed to go practice for a race last Wednesday. He was supposed to go to Fremont, but went instead to Burlingame. $5 Kathy Burgett – (Fined by Pres. Joe). Kathy kept Joe up until 3 am watching her video. $5

Speakers

Bob Dolci

Bob didn’t tell us much about himself but instead what he does for a living. He is in charge of procuring housing for mental health services in Santa Clara County. Thanks to a bill that was passed (Prop. 63) taxing millionaires, there is about $10 million available annually to benefit mental health services in the county.

Ken Wadors

Ken is originally from New Jersey. He has worked for various companies as an engineer in Philadelphia, Chicago and California. His outside interests include public service work with Rotary, the Homeless Consortium, Outreach and his church council. He seemed proudest of his new granddaughter, age 1.
