The Dolphin Club...27 years and still going strong!
Newsletter for the Dolphin Motorhome Club
Dolphin Chapter of FMCA
THE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Chartered: 3-9-89
Volume 28 issue 6 June 2016
Hi, to all my “Dolphin” friends as Memorial Day is here, (the unofficial start to
summer), a lot of you are preparing or have already left for your summer travels.
I hope you all have a great time while staying safe.
While you are on the road enjoying your adventures please keep in mind the Club and
if one of your destinations might be of interest for us to have a rally and take some
pictures to share. As for Adrian and myself, we will be staying close to home this
summer with some local trips. I am looking forward to Lake Tahoe in September to
enjoy the beauty and to partake of Del’s famous tri-tip BBQ and Sandy Smith’s
famous or “infamous s’mores.
The Cozart’s and Hessemer’s are planning a great rally in October at Chula Vista RV Park which will
include our last business meeting for this year.
Our Dolphin Club Rallies will come to an end this year with the Emerald Desert Rally in Palm Springs, CA.
being hosted by Syd & Anna Byford and Chuck & Carol McGaughy in November.
We welcome two new members to the club, James and Karla Banninger, who reside in Twin Peaks, Ca.
and travel in their ’04 Sea Breeze. Also Charles and Sandra Farley of Scottsdale, Az. who travel in an ’07
Dolphin. We welcome you and hope you can attend upcoming rallys so you can be “properly” introduced
to the Club.
Keep safe and happy travels.

THE VICE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Hi everyone,
Since a lot of us are either out there already or heading out for our summer trips, I’m addressing battery maintenance this month. This becomes real important as we travel to our destinations and might be doing some dry camp-ing along the way. Like anything else, your motor home batteries need some maintenance to stay in good shape and continue to serve you well when needed.
First of all, even the best quality RV battery will suffer from corrosion on the terminals. Even a bit of corrosion can cause a voltage drop, especially under load, and also reduce the amperage that can flow. Battery corrosion generally looks like a white or greenish-blue powder that forms around the wire connections. Flooded cell batteries (those with water in the cells) will out-gas when charged and the gasses contain sulfuric acid that corrodes anything it touches. Prevention is a key part of RV battery maintenance, so cleaning the terminal and applying an anti-corrosion agent is your first line of defense. After cleaning and reassembling, apply dielectric grease to the post and cable ends to help prevent new corrosion. Auto parts stores will also sell a convenient anti-corrosion spray, usually red in color but plain old Vaseline works too.
Because of the out-gas process, our house batteries also need to have the water in the cells replenished
occasionally. The liquid in the cells is a mix of water and acid, but just the water evaporates and needs
to be replaced. Check the water in the cells by removing the caps. The liquid should be 1/8” to
1/4”above the top of the lead plates inside. If it is not, add distilled or de-ionized water to bring it up to
that level. The water produced by reverse osmosis purifiers is also ideal for this purpose. Check your
batteries monthly until you have an idea how quickly the water evaporates, then adjust your schedule
so that you always refill before the water reaches the top of the plates. Keep in mind the older your
batteries the more often you will need to refill them.
Safe travels,
Don
IN MEMORY
I received word from Sally White that a past Dolphin Club Member Fred Reeves passed away on may 12,
2016. Fred is survived by his wife Pauline and they resided in Gardena, California. They were active in the
Dolphin club up until 2009. They helped Howard & Sally White co host a rally in Quartzsite, Arizona and
helped with a rally at a Pechanga Resort and Casino. They also hosted an Elks rally in St. George, Utah.
Pauline was also a past Membership chairman in the club. Dave Smith—editor
ON A SAD NOTE
I forgot to mention in the May issue of the Splash that Sandy & Lynn Mayer lost their Dog Riley in April.
She was 11 years old. You could often see her at the rallies with her companion Sporty.
