Cultural Diversity and Maori Dimension Children will be taught to;

• Be accepting of other cultures and differences. • Value each other’s heritage, culture and people.

Our School recognises the unique position of Maori within New Zealand society. We will provide students with experiences and understandings in cultural traditions, language and local and national histories. *School wide practices will consistently observe Tikanga Maori at assemblies, greetings, and powhiri. * We have an ongoing relationship with local iwi. * Currently the school operates three immersion classes (one in each area of the school). The school will;

• Employ a kaiawhina in each immersion class. • Give a management unit to the teacher in charge of the

Immersion classes and Maori achievement. • Undertake school wide professional development in

Tataiako and Kahikitia using outside facilitators and / or the expertise of staff.

• Have an annual Cultural celebration. • Employ an ELL teacher and Learning Assistant to work

with ELL children. • Give a management unit to the teacher in charge of the

ELL programmes and achievement.

Consultation with Maori

Community * The school will consult with our Maori community on the third Thursday of each term * We consult with our school community through newsletters, meetings, questionnaires, or information evenings * Charter sent to MoE in Feb each year * Use computer generated questionnaires on a regular basis

CHARTER – Future Directions

Reflecting New Zealand’s Cultural Diversity

• Continue and maintain Te Hihiri – our three immersion class

• Implement Kapa Haka group in senior and middle school

• Te Reo is integrated in class programmes

• Ensure multi – cultural components in units

• Our annual two week Cultural Celebration in term 1

• Celebrate the “Getting Along “ component of the Knighton Way

• Continue to meet the needs of our ELL children

Annual Plan 2017 Teaching and Learning Programme Development * Building teacher capacity through targeted professional development (maths, writing and reading) * Review how student feedback and feed forward is provided * Implement PR1ME maths programme across school * Review OTJ decisions and moderation in maths and writing * Ensure Inquiry happens across the school *Teachers to focus on targeted children in their class profiles and planning and to provide evidence of achievement progress * Provide Special programmes to meet the needs of GATE students and priority learners * Continue with our very successful Literacy Centre * Focus on priority learners *

Self Review

Human Resources * Staff the school to meet the needs of all children * Implement our performance management system for all staff including measurement against PTCs – staff to have personal goals * Provide and support staff with regular opportunities to update their PTC portfolios * Develop a professional learning plan to enhance teacher and learning assistant capability to meet the needs of students * Meet EEO obligations * Employ School Support person

Health and Safety * Implement the Health and Safety legislation – Introduce and follow appropriate practices * Report to BoT regularly on H & S issues * Conduct evacuation drills at least once a term * Implement EOTC guidelines * Health and Safety an agenda item at all meetings

Property and Infrastructure * Complete current 5YPP and consult re new one * Carry out Modification programme * Put new classroom on site * Continue to be an Enviro School * Address remedial issues – admin block, changing sheds

Partnership with Community * Communication – regular school and BoT newsletters, parent conversations, reports meetings, meet the teacher evenings to keep parents / whanau informed, * Maintain an up to date web site and school app * Consult and report to parents on the NZ Curriculum and other important aspects of school organisation through meetings and digital questionnaires * Maintain our relationships with the FoE, Kirikiriroa and Te Kohinga marae * Consult our community re our Charter in term 4 * Teachers are encouraged to have a class blog * We belong to the Hamilton Central City Community of Learners

Curriculum Goals * Deepen knowledge of, and implement, the NZ curriculum * Implement the Knighton Curriculum * To review learning programmes on an ongoing basis, * Refer to Teaching and learning programme development in Targets section

Numeracy Goal *To increase the percentage of students achieving at or above national standards for Mathematics (school expectation is that 70% will be at or above NS) * Further develop best practice models for Numeracy

Literacy Goal * To increase the percentage of students achieving at or above national standards for Reading and Writing (school expectation is that 70% will be at or above NS) * Further develop best practice models for Literacy Special Needs Goal *To identify At Risk students and implement effective support programmes

Professional Learning and Development Goals Through high quality PDL opportunities staff will improve their teaching capacity and practice * We are part of a Community of Learners and will set our achievement goals later in the year. *Writing needs to be an going focus for all teachers. Staff will be introduced to Responsive Written feedback programme and encouraged to operate it * Continue moderation and professional conversations, in Areas, of children’s work and assessments leading to increased validity of OTJs, particularly in writing to raise student achievement * Introduce the PR1ME maths programme across the school * Develop the Numeracy at KNS expectation sheet * Deepen understanding of Teaching as Inquiry – all staff to undertake an Inquiry based on our targets * Deepen understandings of student feedback and feed forward * Student agency *Continue MoE ALiM contract * Undertake collaborative learning and teaching journey

Targets 2017

Targets for Student Achievement Our overall goal is to accelerate the progress of all children Maths - Target groups i. All teachers will target children who are below National

Standards and we expect, that across the school, that 30% of these children will show accelerated progress (more than a years progress in 12 months)

Reading - Target groups i. All teachers will target children who are below National

Standards and we expect, that across the school, that 30% of these children will show accelerated progress (more than a years progress in 12 months)

Writing – Target groups i. All teachers will target children who are below National

Standards and we expect, that across the school, that 30% of these children will show accelerated progress (more than a years progress in 12 months)

Special Needs children All children identified as having learning needs will have a school based IEP which will reviewed at the end of each term.

Oral Language We will target a group of Year 1 children and monitor their progress

We will work alongside the Hamilton Central City Community of Learners in meeting our Achievement Statement when it is accepted

Teaching and Learning programme development * Evaluate achievement patterns, including gender, ethnicity & priority learners * Teachers will engage in professional conversations to raise student achievement * Use achievement data to make OTJs * To use achievement data to identify students for targetted programmes * To keep refining the school Inquiry model * Exec team to monitor groups of children just below standard * Targetted meeting each term in Maths, Reading and Writing

Resourcing and Support

*All resourcing will come out of the 2017 budget * FoE, Community of Learners, RTLB service GSE, MoE, BLENZ and other relevant agencies
