The Player Handbook: Member Etiquette

Member EtiquetteBeing a mature and advanced role-playing

community we expect current and potentialmembers to behave in a civil and respectablemanner. We follow the golden rule that youshould treat others as you would have themtreat you in return. Here you can read up onthe important rules for keeping our onlinecommunity friendly and in order.

DOUBLE POSTING

Double posting is not allowed, simple asthat. If you made a mistake in your post youcan always go back and Edit It. If you find thatyour Original Character is stuck in a placewhere they are left alone, you can just go backand edit your last post stating that yourcharacter is going someplace else.

I. Role-Playing ForumsThere are only three places where double

posting is allowed.

1. In your Journal Thread2. In an Apartment/House3. In your Magical Tome

Another exception to double posting iswhen your character leaves a particularlocation. As long as your character's last post issimilar to the example post below they canreturn to the same location and post againeven if no one has posted there since theircharacter left the thread awhile ago. Forexample:

"QUOTE" - Beach @ The Pier {OldPost}

Matthew Johnson looks at hiswatch and notices how late itactually is. "Paige is probablyfreakin', I'll never hear the end ofit." Picking up his things he leaves

the pier and goes back to hisApartment within Bay HillApartments.

You may return to the thread in a newpost, even if no new post from anothermember/player has been added.

"QUOTE" - Beach @ The Pier {NewPost}

Matthew returns to the pierafter his meeting with Paige. (Iwonder how long she is going to staypissed at me?) He looks out into theocean blue, glad to be at a peacefulplace where he can relax andupdate his spellbook unbothered.

II. Out of Character ForumsDouble posting in the OOC Forums is not

necessarily forbidden, but should be avoidedat all costs. Members who post in the OOCthreads with back to back posts every fiveminutes (more or less) will receive warnings, and be faced with possible suspension fromthe board.

However, if it has been 24 HOURS sinceyou have posted in a thread and no one elsehas posted feel free to add a new post withoutworrying about posting back to back. It shouldalso be noted that any constant double postingconsisting of SPAM will result in an immediatethree day suspension from the board.

META-GAMING

This is one of the biggest no-nos at theRPG. Meta-Gaming is simply not allowedhere. What is meta-gaming? Well it can beclassified as a number of things, but forCharmed: Age of Prophecy we have a list of whatwe consider meta-gaming.

The List:

❍ Creating your own Non-PlayerCharacters. For instance, introducing asecondary (usually unapproved)character within one of your in-characterposts whom interacts with your existingcharacter. It could be an actual person, someone driving, etc.

3

Page 4: Charmed RPG Player Handbook

The Player Handbook: Member Etiquette

❍ Controlling other characters' actions andreactions. When you post the actions orreactions of another character in yourown posts.

❍ Having your character illogically andwithout reason head to a particularlocation just because a great deal ofaction is taking place there, a magicalitem/tome can be found there, and/orbecause a particular character is therealone.

❍ Having your character use or possessoutside knowledge that you the playerknow, but is something the characterthemselves should have no idea exists. Please make sure you do not do anythingon this list while role-playing.

The list will be updated when need be.

I. Meta-gaming in terms of fightingWhen it

comes to fightingin this RPG, youneed to get to thepoint with themove and make it,but there are noauto-connects andno auto-kills. Here's an example of anacceptable move (with basic characters):

....Courtney runs forward andswings her sword at Phoebe's neck.

Such a move leaves the following optionsfor your opponent:

- Phoebe has the opportunity toblock- Phoebe has the opportunity tocounter - Phoebe has the opportunity toaccept the hit - Phoebe has the opportunity to runaway

All of which are acceptable reactions(when done within reason, blatant avoidanceof attacks to unrealistically keep a characteralive will not be tolerated) that keep the role-playing environment fun for everyone whilestill allowing player-to-player combat. Byallowing the other player to react, you keepthings fair and open-ended and preventyourself from trying to control the plot or fightwhen you have no right to.

MISTREATMENT OF REGULATIONS

Mistreatment of other users in any way, shape or form is strictly forbidden here atCharmed: Age of Prophecy. The same forintentionally breaking any one of the rules. If auser has broken a rule or mistreated a memberunintentionally they will just receive awarning from our staff.

However, members who are caughtbreaking rules or mistreating membersintentionally will be suspended from theboard for 2 weeks, and if they continue tobreak rules and/or mistreat others after they'reoff their suspension, they will be banned fromthe board.

Warning System Guidelines

1st Offense = Warning2nd Offense = Suspension3rd Offense = Banned

If you feel that you or another member arebeing mistreated, contact a Moderator orAdmin immediately so that the situation canbe taken cared of. Try PMing a Moderator orthe Admin that is online during the same timeyou are online to get the quickest response. Soplease treat all members with respect, and thesame will be done to you.

MODERATION PREVIEW

None of us are perfect. Some of us misusegrammar and make errors when it comes tospelling, but with some it is a bit hard to readthrough when their entire post is nearlygrammatically incorrect.

For this reason we have implemented asystem to correct this by making use of themoderator post preview system. The staff willcheck the grammar and spelling of all postsand if a member's grammar and spelling are inbad shape, that member will go on moderationpreview; meaning their posts won't show upon the board unless a moderator or the Adminhave checked it over and edited out any andall grammatical mistakes first.

Members with poor grammar usage willreceive a warning, first hand, but if the badgrammar continues they will go on moderationpreview. Only if they improve on theirwriting/grammatical skills, will they be able

4

Page 5: Charmed RPG Player Handbook

The Player Handbook: Member Etiquette

to post freely on the board again...it's kindaharsh and may scare off some members, but it'sthe only way the staff can think of to get somepeople into reading over their posts beforehitting that submit button.

So remember, be wise and revise beforeposting. In the RPG, your typing serves asyour way of bringing life to your character: itgives people first impressions of them, andreinforces them as relatable people. If you takethe time to review your posts before hitting'submit', you will save those playing with you,the staff - and yourself a great deal of grief.

POSTING & TIME ZONES

Since this is a play by post role-playinggame, there will be times when the players of acertain RP will not be online at the same timeof the day. We have members that span acrossthe globe, so please try your best to be fair.Just remember to take into consideration thefact that we all live within different time zonesand cannot always be present on the boardwithin the same time frame.

It is asked that you be fair and do notblock out a player's character from a RPbecause they are not on at the same time thatyou are. If it becomes apparent that a majorityof posting is going on without any responsefrom one player, please cease posting for a dayor two to allow the "missing" player to get in apost and not be shut out of the RP entirely. Justbe curteous and all will go well.

POSTING FORMAT

To keep the interactive role-playing on theboard seamless, we have a set format for themembers/players to follow when posting incharacter.

Please write in the third person of "he, she,it" rather than the first person of "I, me, my".

To write in the latter form will only serve inadding confusion, as those reading your postwill have to look at the author's username andremember who they are playing to figure outwho they are writing about. Please try toidentify your character by name within yourposts at least once to help to avoid confusionof any kind.

Also please write all posts in Prose StoryFormat and in the present tense. An example ofsuch can be found below when writing outyour character's actions.

QUOTE (Posting Actions)Hilary walks into the manor'skitchen and spots Piper near thesink. She needs to make surePhoebe gave Piper the properingredients for the vanquishingpotion if they are going to protectthe innocent from the Matinnenfordemon. Walking across the roomtowards the Charmed One, Hilarystands next to her as she nervouslybegins to speak to the older witch.

When it comes to penning your character'sspoken word please remember to start and endeach dialogue with double quotation marks (""). Also do not forget to end your character'sdialogue with the proper punctuation; periods(.), question marks (?), exclamation marks (!), orellipses (...). When using ellipses please onlyuse three (...) excessive ellipses, such as (........)can be very annoying and disruptive of posts. Please follow the example posted below.

QUOTE (Posting Speech)"Piper..." Hilary began, nervousabout being alone with theCharmed One. "Did Phoebe giveyou the ingredients to the potion?"

When writing out your character'sthoughts please remember to do so initalicized with or without ().

QUOTE (Posting Thoughts)(I wonder if Piper is even listening tome.)

or

I wonder if Piper is even listening to me.

When it comes time for your character tomove onto a new location (thread) please state

5

Page 6: Charmed RPG Player Handbook

The Player Handbook: Member Etiquette

where your character is moving onto so thatothers can be aware of their departure. Tomake it even more clear as to where yourcharacter is heading off to, pleasebold/embolden the new location (threadname). Some player's, to make it easier tofollow a character's storyline from location tolocation, link the new location's name with theaccompany url link. For example:

QUOTE (Leaving A Location)Hilary rolls her eyes at Piper's utterignorance of her presence. Bitingher lip, she sighs at her lack ofconnection with the eldest CharmedOne and she leaves the room, heading into the dining room.

If you don't feel like going anywhere inparticular, but still want to exit a thread justpost something similar to the following:

QUOTE (Leaving A Location)Hilary rolls her eyes at Piper's utterignorance of her presence. Bitingher lip, she sighs at her lack ofconnection with the eldest CharmedOne and she leaves the room, walking out of the kitchen's backdoor, with no new particulardestination in mind.

Note that one should avoid using thelatter, as it throws off those who are readingyour posts. One should only use the latterapproach when they will be away from theboard for an extended period of time and wantto put their character off somewhere to keepfrom hindering game play. Below is a fullexample of an in-character post.

QUOTE (Character Post Ex.)Hilary walks into the manor'skitchen and spots Piper near thesink. She needs to make surePhoebe gave Piper the properingredients for the vanquishingpotion if they are going to protectthe innocent from the Matinnenfordemon. Walking across the roomtowards the Charmed One, Hilarystands next to her as she nervouslybegins to speak to the older witch.

"Piper..." Hilary began, nervousabout being alone with theCharmed One, "Did Phoebe give

you the ingredients to the potion?"the young witch asks while leaningagainst the kitchen counter. Shewatches Piper closely, and afterawhile of not getting a response shethinks to herself quietly.

(I wonder if Piper is even listening tome.)

Hilary rolls her eyes at Piper's utterignorance of her presence. Bitingher lip, she sighs at her lack ofconnection with the eldest CharmedOne and she leaves the room, heading into the dining room.

POSTING OUT OF CHARACTER

Posting out of character is simply notallowed within the IN CHARACTER forumson the board. If you would like to post out ofcharacter please do so in the OUT OFCHARACTER forums. If any member postsOOC in their character posts; the posts willsimply be edited out and the member willreceive a warning.

SIGNATURE BANNERS

Although members are allowed signaturebanners (as representations of your charactersonly), there is a limit in the size they must be.Your signature banners should be no larger

6

Page 7: Charmed RPG Player Handbook

The Player Handbook: Game Guidelines

than 70,000 PIXELS. Now you may bewondering, how do you know if your banneris larger than 70,000 pixels? Well it's rathersimple, just multiply the width and height ofyour banner: width x hieght {500x500}. If yousignature banner is 500x500, just do themultipulcation.

500 x 500 = 250,000 PIXELS

Which means you sig banner is too large. So as long as the width and heightmultipulcation of your banner isn't greaterthan 70,000 pixels than you're fine. Also try notto make your sig banners vertical, buthorizantal.

Game GuidelinesEvery world has universal rules that

governs how it operates, and the Charmed: Ageof Prophecy universe is no different. Theguidelines pertaining to how our role-playingworld functions can be reviewed below.

BANKING SYSTEM

All characters good or evil willautomatically get a bank account with abalance of $2000.00 and will have an ATM cardhandy when they join the game. All characterswill use ATM cards when purchasing any typeof product within the game, and when at arestaurant, club, etc. they must pay using theirATM card and the payment will be drawnautomatically from their account. Paper moneyand coinage does not exist in our role-playinggame's universe. For more information, refer toour Monetary System guide (located withinthe role-playing forums).

(No character should be walking aroundwith any type of montary bills or change. Even"payphones" will require ATM cards.)

When making purchases please emboldenexactly how much of your money you arespending. It will be logged how much moneyyou withdraw from your bank account soplease do not try to make your pockets pitless. All payments from jobs performed areforwarded directly to the character's bankaccount as well.

ATM CARD USES:

1. You can use your ATM card to purchase anyitem in the game.

2. You can use your ATM card at the ATMMACHINE to view your account balance.

Using The ATM Machine:Confused on how the ATM MACHINE

works? Well don't fret, here are the guidelinesfor using the ATM MACHINE.

Step 1. Once you arrive at the ATMMACHINE insert you ATM cardand wait for a response from userATM MACHINE by doing so likethis:

Simple Example: Alyson walks up to theATM Machine and inserts her ATMcard.

Step 2. User ATM MACHINE willask you to PM it your four digitpassword, that the Bank TellerPMed to you.

Step 3. Once your password isconfirmed user ATM MACHINEwill ask if you would like to toview your account, then it willshow your current balance.

Step 4. User ATM Machine thenwill ask if you would like to makeanother transacition. If you replyno, the ATM MACHINE willreturn your ATM card. If you replyyes user ATM MACHINE will startover again at step 3.

CHARACTER DEATH

7

Page 8: Charmed RPG Player Handbook

The Player Handbook: Game Guidelines

When entering the world of Charmed: Ageof Prophecy you may have some concerns aboutdeath in relation to your Original Character. You may wonder if your character can die, what happens after your character dies, andwill you be banned from the board once yourcharacter dies. To help you understand thelogistics about death in the C:AoP world hereare some frequently asked questions aboutcharacter death:

❍ IF MY CHARACTER DIES, MAY ICREATE ANOTHER?Yes you can create another character, butyou must go through the auditionprocess again before your new characteris created. However, returning membersfalling within a THREE MONTHPERIOD from their OC's death may skipover the questionnaire portion of theaudition.

❍ CAN MY CHARACTER COMMITSUICIDE?Yes a character can kill themselves, it'snot as if someone can stop them. But whywould a character want to commitsuicide? Remember to be logical whenplaying your role in the world of C:AoP.It should be noted that one should notkill off their character so they can create anew character in hopes of getting a betterpower, species, or storyline. This willresult in either receiving the exact samepower/species, no power at all(completely mortal), or rejection of theirnewest audition.

❍ CAN ANOTHER CHARACTER KILLYOUR CHARACTER?Another character has no control overwhether or not your character dies. Evenif one character stabs another one in theheart, the 'wounded character' must posttheir death themselves. In extreme casesthe POWERS THAT BE may post that acharacter has died if he or she has beenseverely wounded to the point beyondsaving.

❍ WHAT HAPPENS AFTER MYCHARACTER DIES?Depending on what force your characterwas associated with (Light or Darkness)they will appear in one of two realms. The SPIRIT REALM for good characters

❍ and the WASTELAND for evilcharacters. Once in the proper spiritualrealm your character will be instructedon what occurs next by a HIGHERPOWER.

❍ IF THE ADMIN AND MODERATORSFEEL YOU ARE NOT PLAYINGCORRECTLY OR ABIDING BY THERULES AND YOU'VE BEEN WARNED,CAN THEY 'WRITE YOURCHARACTER OFF'?Yes, but this will happen only in extremecases. Those members who constantly ona day-to-day basis ignore the rules andwarnings from a moderator or admin willhave their Original Character "writtenoff", in a sense.

HOW DO I PAY RENT?

So your Original Character rented theirvery own apartment. Well within the C:AoPworld having them pay their monthly rent fortheir apartment is fairly simple. The amount ofmoney due at the end of the month is drawndirectly from your Original Character's accountat the BANK OF SAN FANCISCO. As long asyour Original Character has enough money intheir bank account to cover the rent you havenothing to worry about.

Roommates:If you and another player are sharing an

apartment/penthouse with your OCs and youhave both decided to split the rent evenly, youmust inform the Super/Landlord of thedesignated apartment complex while INCHARACTER. This is done not only to keepgame play more realistic, but to also have thebalance due to the Super/Landlord drawnequally from each of the roommates' accountwhen it comes time to pay the rent. Otherwisethe the initial character who applied for theapartment will be charged the full amount ofthe rent due from their bank account alone.

HOW TO READ PURCHASED TEXTS

Alright, so your OC purchased a spell bookfrom THE MAGIC BOX located nearFISHERMAN'S WHARF in the wonderfulworld that is Charmed: Age of Prophecy. Nowthey're ready to crack open those weatheredold pages and absorb all the wondrousknowledge held within the old text.

8

Page 9: Charmed RPG Player Handbook

The Player Handbook: Game Guidelines

But wait...how exactly does your OC READthe text when you don't even know what's init?

Well after you have purchased aparticular book from the occult shop the ownerAMY MADISON will PM (Personal Message)you a password to a forum (located in TEXTINDEX forum) with the same title as the textyou purchased.

Once you've used the password to enterthe forum, you are free to read the contents ofthe text!

However, you must NEVER give away apassword to a particular text forum. If a playeris caught doing this they will have their bookmagically taken from them by the POWERSTHAT BE and the password to forum of thetext you possessed will be changed. You willalso be banned from buying any further textsfrom THE MAGIC BOX until the Admindeems to lift the banning.

PERSONAL TOMES

One of the perks of joining Charmed: Age ofProphecy is that you get to create your veryown spellbook/personal tome for INCHARACTER use. A thread kept in theTOMES OF MAGIC forum will serve as a logof the spells, potions recipes, and othermagical knowledge your Original Characterwrites down. Below are the rules andguidelines for maintaining a characterspellbook.

1. You are in NO way allowed to postspells, potions, or information that hasappeared on Charmed, or Charmed: TheVirtual Season(s) that are in theHalliwell's BOOK OF SHADOWS in yourown personal tome. The only information

you are allowed to post in yourspellbook thread is information youcreated yourself.2: Before posting spells in yourspellbook thread, you must have yourcharacter perform the action of writingthe spell in the spellbook first.

Sample Post:Matt sits at the kitchen table and writes anInvisibility Spell into his Book of Shadows.

Once you've done that you may go toyour personal tome thread and post thespell you had your character add tohis/her magical tome.

3. Certain spells from your spellbooksmay be deleted from your personal tomeby an admin or mod. Certain spells liketime-traveling spells and healing spellsshouldn't exist in your OC's spellbook.

How can a player time-travel in a RPG inthe first place? Be sensible with time-travel you would be sending yourcharacter ahead or back in time, but therest of the board will still be in thepresent time. There will be no where foryou to post if you're not in the same timeframe as everyone else.

Also healing spells are rare occurencesthat are highly frowned upon, playerswho cast healing spells on themselves allthe time are virtually trying to make theirOC invincible. It's not a witch's job toheal wounds, that's what whitelightersare for.Any spell that seems unsensible to theway the C:AoP functions will be deletedfrom any players spell book.

4. In case anyone is wondering if they canedit their old posts so that they can addmore spells to your spellbooks, youCAN NOT do that. That's in a senseCHEATING. That is not what the editingfeature is for.

To add new spells to your personal tomeyou MUST put your character in a NEW

9

Page 10: Charmed RPG Player Handbook

The Player Handbook: Game Guidelines

situation to add spells. If you can't putyour character into a situation to add anew spell then just wait until they areable to. If anyone is caught doing sothey'll receive a warning but if itcontinues to be a probelm their editingabilities will be stripped.

PREGNANCY

Ah love, or just really great sex. So twocharacters of the male and female persuasionhooked up and formed the beast with twobacks, eh? Well if they have I'm sure theirplayers have followed the cardinal rule ofFADING TO BLACK before describinganything too graphic and venturing off into NC-17 territory.

A player may feel no need to worry aboutpregnancy because you can decide if yourcharacter gets pregnant or not, right? Wrong. All pregnancies are determined by thePOWERS THAT BE ONLY!

No character, albeit the female of malecounterpart, in a relationship can say whetheror not a female character is pregnant. Even iftheir character is trying to get pregnant thefinal call is up to the POWERS THAT BE.

As of yet, it will be extremely rare forOriginal Characters to turn up preggersbecause babies will only bring complicationsinto the game. Sure we have kids in the RPG,but considering the formalities of playing outpregnancies and playing the baby charactersafter birth... it will be a gigantic issue.

When the time comes that we feelcharacters should in fact start reproducing, certain female characters who obviously havean active sex life may find themselves with "abun in the oven", but there won't be anymiraculous

pregnancies popping out of no where if thefemale character is not sexually active... or willthere?

SCRYING

Scrying is simple in the C:AoP world, allyour OC will need is a bowl and bermudatriangel water. The last item can be purchasedat THE MAGIC BOX. All you have to do ispower the water over into a bowl andconcentrate, on the object/person you'relooking for location to appear in the bowl.

You'll know when your scrying hasworked because a new post will appearindicatng if it worked and where theobject/person you'll looking for is located.

Scrying can also be done with a map, anda crystal hanging from a string. You'll receiveyour results the same way you do when youuse the bermuda triangle water.

SPELLS & POTIONS

Spells:Spell casting

can be a funactivity to parttake in whileparticipating in therole-playing worldof C:AoP, butremember everything comes with aconsequence. So be careful what types of spellyou cast, and be sure that they don't fall underthe "No Personal Gain" rule of Charmed. Whencasting spells please be sure to:

A. Never post the outcome of your ownspell. That will be done for you by thePOWERS THAT BE.B. Embolden and/or Italicize your spellso that it is easier for the POWERSTHAT BE to spot. Feel free to add somecolor to spell text if you like. As long as itmakes the spell easier to spot.C. Clearly state the intended objective ofyour spell within your post. It couldpossibly be very helpful to you when thePOWERS THAT BE decide the outcomeof your spell.

Why follow these guidelines? Because it'smore fun that way. Now, the results of your

10

Page 11: Charmed RPG Player Handbook

The Player Handbook: Game Guidelines

spell will be posted for you in a new post. Butbe careful of how you word your spell, it maybackfire on you! Please don't use the spellfeature too often. The Powers That Be mightdecided to teach you a lesson in learning to dothings on your own if you do so.

Potions:Using potions can be a fun activity to part

take in while RPing. So be careful what typesof potions you create, and be sure that theydon't fall under the "No Personal Gain" rule ofCharmed. When using/creating potions pleasebe sure to:

A. Never post the outcome of your ownpotion. That will be done for you by thePOWERS THAT BE.B. Clearly state and embolden theintended objective of your potion withinyour post when creating and using apotion. It necessary so that the POWERSTHAT BE can decide the outcome ofyour potion.C. When creating a potion please becareful of the type of ingredients youuse. Random mixing of potioningredients can cause backfired results ofpotions. It must be stressed again thatwhen using potions to please be sure notto post the outcome of the potion'seffects. That will be done for you by thePOWERS THAT BE just like the resultsof your spell castings will be done foryou by them.

TALISMANS & AMULETS

Using a Talisman or Amulet is simpleenough in the C:AoP world. When using aamulet/talisman, you must wait for a responsefrom the Non-Player Character (NPC) useraccount sharing the same name of the Amuletor Talisman to inform if the magical artifactworked or not. The POWERS THAT BEcontrol these rare magical items not thecharacter.

Please don't post results of an amulet ortalisman's power. Just wait for a response fromthe correct NPC account informing you ofwhether the use of the artifact was successful.

TELEPHONE CALLS

So you want to make a phone call huh?Well there is a certain way one must go aboutthis when making a call in the C:AoP world. Here's a list of steps one must follow whenmaking a telephone call of any genre; cellularor regular telephone. Post in the current threadthat your character is in that your character ismaking a phone call and be sure to state thename of the person they are calling. Pleasepost all of this information in bold text.

Ex: Piper picks up her phone andpunches it a number calling Phoebe'sOffice Line.

Next go to THE TELEPHONENETWORK forum and post in the appropriatethread (i.e. Phoebe's Office Line) in thefollowing fashion.

Ex: Piper waits on the other end of theline for Phoebe to answer the phone.

Next you must wait for user PHONELINE to post the following response.

Ex: Connecting you to Phoebe's OfficeLine...

After that has been done user PHONELINE will post letting the person you arecalling know they have an incoming call inwhatever thread the character has last posted(does not include Out of CharacterThreads/Journals).

Ex: Phoebe's Office phone rings, indicating that she has an incoming call.

IMPORTANT: NO ONE is to answer aphone call without user PHONE LINE postingto let them know they have an incoming call.Once user PHONE LINE has posted asindicated the incoming call as shown above, the member (in this case Phoebe) can post inTHE TELEPHONE NETWORK forum in theappropriate thread answering the call.

The entire phone call conversation musttake place in THE TELEPHONE NETWORKforum. Either party is free to end the call at anymoment by posting something similar tobelow.

Ex: Piper hangs up the phone, ending thephone call.

11

Page 12: Charmed RPG Player Handbook

The Player Handbook: Game Guidelines

User PHONE LINE will give a characterthree days in real time to answer a phone call.If they do not answer within the three day timeframe user PHONE LINE will post thisresponse.

Ex: No one is answering. Phone callended.

If a character is already having aconversation on their phone, user PHONELINE will post this response.

Ex: Phoebe's Office Line is busy... tryagain later. Phone call ended.

Once the phone call has ended you arefree to return to the previous thread yourcharacter last posted in before making orreceiving the phone call.

The Player Handbook: Character Guidelines

Character GuidelinesWhen creating and maintaining your

original character you must use caution, beingsure to adhere to the limits of what they can doand be aware of. In this section of thehandbook you can read about importantregulations that you must have your originalcharacter follow.

AGE & NUMBER LIMIT

When thinking about joining the role-playworld known as Charmed: Age of Prophecy, andwith your very own Original Character no less, please note two major aspects you must abideby before actually going through the process ofbeing "cast" into the role-playing game.

Character Age LimitNo Original Character (OC) may be

younger than the age of EIGHTEEN YEARSOLD. Not seventeen, sixteen, or younger. Sotherefore no character should be born after theyear of 1986.

If you post saying your character was bornin 1986 or higher it will be altered by theadmin. So please remember that the game istaking place during 2004 so when picking yourcharacter's age be sure to use thecorresponding years. If a character is twenty-two, use the following method;

2004 - 22 = 1982

The above formula goes for any other agefrom eighteen on up.

Character Number LimitA member's character limit is ONE.

Members are only allowed onecharacter/username to play and that's it, butthere are loopholes to this rule. For instance, anyone who is interested in taking on anymain character listed for availability may dothis, regardless of whether or not they alreadyplay an original character.

A second way is if the admin grants youleniency to play a second OC, however onlymembers with good standing AND have beenapart of the community for three months may

make such a request. Also if anyone is evergranted the power of ASTRAL PROJECTION,BI-LOCATION, OR CLONING they will ofcourse be exempt from this rule.

JUMPING LOCATIONS

Please, when your Original Characterleaves one location and heads to another donot JUMP OVER certain threads to get to adesired location. Mainly what we mean by thisis DO NOT AVOID FRONT ENTRANCES,especially if your character does not possessany type of teleportation power.

For instance, when arriving at Quake donot by-pass the Front Entrance thread to godirectly to the Bar, Tables, etc. This is also forany new location/establishment your characteris arriving to.

The most common of all places this rulemust be adhered by is when your character isheading/leaving home. You MUST have yourcharacter use the Front Entrance (and ifnecessary have them use the Stairs or Elevator)and then head into the designated Hallway onwhich their apartment/dorm is located. Noskipping directly to your apartment/dormunless you are doing so in the form of atransportation power. The same goes whengoing the reverse way, exiting yourhome/apartment/dorm.1

Anyone caught disobeying this rule willreceive warnings. Continuing to break oradhere to this rule (after 2 warnings) can leadto a temporary suspension from the board. Inextreme cases, (out right defiance) you caneven become banned from the RPG untilfurther notice from the Administrator ofCharmed: Age of Prophecy.

Traveling On Streets/RoadsPlaces Outside San Francisco1. Muir Woods2. Skylark Camp3. The Forest4. Kilmer Grounds

In addition to the above, if you plan tohave your character arrive at any locationOUTSIDE SAN FRANCISCO (without the

Notes and References:1. If you bypass hallways, staircases, etc (excluding the front/backdoors) WITHIN a character's home, it is excusable.

aide of a teleportation power) such as the fourlisted above you MUST travel from the SANFRANCISCO STREETS and then take theHIGHWAY. Once those areas have beenposted in you may have your character go toany of the above locations outside the city.

Anyone caught disobeying this rule willreceive warnings. Continuing to break oradhere to this rule (after 2 warnings) can leadto a temporary suspension from the board. Inextreme cases, (out right defiance) you caneven become banned from the RPG untilfurther notice from the Admin.

MAGICAL KNOWLEDGE

When you bring your Original Characterinto the C:AoP world you may have the urgeto make them an all-knowing being who canidentify any demon, look up the Charmed Onesin the magical yellow pages, and have everyspell ever created at their disposal. If thatdescribed you at all ... FIGHT THAT URGE!

Otherwise you'll just find yourself in aheap of trouble with the head honcho, John. You don't want to risk being banned fromC:AoP simply because you wanted yourcharacter to be a Mary-Sue2!

To help you keep your OC in a realisticlight here are some guidelines on what yourcharacters can and cannot know about theworld of magic:

1. If your Original Character is a WITCH,MORTAL, OR ANY FORCE OF LIGHT theycannot know about whitelighters or Elders.Your character should be oblivious to theirexistence.3 Original Characters that areDEMONS, WARLOCKS, OR A FORCE OFDARKNESS are an exception to this rule, including those who have switched to the sideof good.

2. It is okay if you make it as though yourcharacter knew about magic growing up buttheir power level should not go past what thePOWERS THAT BE set it to be. So if the PTBput a limit on your OC's power... you have toabide by that!

3. You can add demon biographies and such inyour book of shadows/tome/grimoire, butplease don't make up an entry because you seea particular demon or magical creature on ourmembers list. Wait until your character hashad an actual meeting with the magical entityor has met someone in the game who alreadyknows about the particular being in order toreceive the information from that character.

4. The identity of the CHARMED ONESshould be oblivious to all new characters, good and evil. Your characters are allowed toknow the legend of the CHARMED ONES, butnot who they are or where they are located.Evil characters with ambitions to attack or testthemselves against the Halliwell sisters shouldseek this information from older upper leveldemons who co-exist within the Underworld.

Notes and References:2. "Mary Sue (Gary Lou)" is an unkind term used to describe acertain kind of character, featured through an almost common styleof writing with newer (and sadly sometimes experienced) writers. She (or he) is created to serve one purpose: WISH FULFILLMENT.When a writer creates a specific character through whom he/shecan have fantastic adventures and accomplish the impossible, improbable, and illogical this character is a Mary Sue.3. OC Whitelighters are of course exempt.

SUPERNATURAL ABILITIES

The following listed supernatural abilitieshave raised concern among staff and membersalike; please reference the guidelines for eachbelow to avoid confusion or misuse of thepower in the RP should your character possessone of them.

HealingA Whitelighter's healing power is no

longer automatic. The whitelighter makes theattempt to heal, and the Elders determinewhether or not it was successful in a separatepost.

Particle Deceleration a.k.a. "The Freeze"For the purposes of the C:AoP universe

the ability known as Particle Decelerationa.k.a. the Freeze will not work as though itdoes on the television show Charmed or theonline virtual series Charmed: The VirtualSeason(s). These measures were taken toprevent the ability from becoming void withinthe role-playing game community. In theC:AoP world, the power of ParticleDeceleration (Freeze) will work on thefollowing:

1. Good Witches2. Innocents/Mortals3. Vampires4. Demons5. Warlocks6. Whitelighters & Most Other Magical

Beings

The only individuals who will beunaffected by the freezing power areHalliwells, those with Warren Blood. Otherswho may be immune to the power will besome upper-level demons (i.e. the Source), andsome higher beings such as the Angel of Death,Angel of Destiny & the Elders.

Please note those under the infulence ofthis ability cannot post in the RPG fourmsagain until the effects of the freeze are taken orworn off of their character.

TelepathyA person must make the conscious

decision to hear or project thoughts by makinga connection between themselves and the otherperson. They can't hear any random thoughtsthat are posted and must adhere to the PTB'slimit of how many people they can make aconnection with.

LEVEL SYSTEM

Charmed: Age of Prophecy has animplemented level system for the Primary andOriginal Characters of the role-playing game. There are twelve levels in all, Level One beingthe novice stage and Level Twelve being thesupreme stage, quite literally.

■ Level Ten is the level cap for magicaspiring creatures that become powerfulbut not omnipotent.

■ Level Eleven is a place reserved fordemigods to reach, or a Level Ten to maxat when on a power binge.

■ Level Twelve is reserved for characterswho evolve into TRUE gods; immortalAND omnipotent. Any creature good orevil can possibly become a true god, asdark and light gods exist in ourmythology.

COOKIE TICKET (FAQs)

What are the cookie tickets for? Thetickets can be redeemed for a certain prize.

How do you redeem them? Simple.Donate your cookies to the Cookie Jar. All youhave to do is post in the Cookie Jar thread, stating how many cookies your are donating. Then John or the Powers That Be will rewardyou with a 'gift' that fits the number of cookiesyou donate.

What are the types of gifts you canreceive? Well it is a bit random for eachamount, but it can range from trinkets forcharacters, level boosts, IC hints, accessto...well I can't tell you everything as the fun isthat you never know what you can get.

Why are we donating our cookies into acookie jar? Simple, yet again. Once the jarreaches a certain capacity the cookies can begiven to the "cookie monster" who will thenenact a reward for the entire board...something

everyone will benefit from. So see by earningcookies, you can help out your fellowmembers in the process. Now isn't that niceand doesn't it drudge up warm fuzzy feelingsinside?

How does the cookie monster get thecookies? The members decide. There will be apoll when the time comes, and they can eithervote to throw the cookies away or give them tothe cookie monster. Because, some of youmight not like the idea of earning your owncookies and then having someone else reap thebenefit from themso this option will beenforced to see if we have a bunch of goodSamaritans or a bunch of meanies.

Um...that's it? I have more questions. Gotmore questions about the system? *sigh* Wellthen PM them to John or the Powers That Be onthe main forum. Or you can simply ask it inthe Pardon My Query forum.

OUT-THINK THE GM

I read an RPG article on the net, wheregame masters (GMs) were advised to be looseand adaptable because the many heads of theplayers will always out-think the single headof the GM. I, however, dismissed that seeing asI'm not completely alone with Mods who arearound to help me.

But, like the person who wrote the article Isometimes, surprisingly, find myself baffledwhen players fail to solve problems andobstacles I throw at them. Or assume that I'llgive them the answer to the obstacle orproblem without them doing anything tofigure it out for themselves. Thusly, somecharacters find themselves stuck in a particularthread waiting on me to hand them the answer,or speed up the plot so that they won't have tofigure out a way to solve the problem on theirown.

16

Page 17: Charmed RPG Player Handbook

The Player Handbook: Miscellaneous Information

Now, I would like to advise you all thatthere is a logic to RPG problem-solving thatplayers can apply to help themselves succeed. With suggestions from the article I read, andsome of my own hints at helping you, theplayer, get past certain obstacles I havecomprised a list of guidelines to help you all.

Remember the Rules of the GameNow this doesn't necessarily pertain to the

rules on the board, but the universal rulespeople must follow when doing 'detectivework'.

Clues are important. That toss-off remarkby random person on the street, arecurring nightmare, a lost object youhappen to stray upon... all these thingsusually lead to something important thathelps in figuring out the obstacle at hand.Sometimes, there may be a few "redherrings" or falsies thrown in (as anyclever GM would do) but in general, allclues should be jotted down and lookedover.

If the clues lead somewhere, follow. Justbecause clues lead to a 'scary place'doesn't mean you should avoidfollowing them. Role playing yourdisinterest of following the clues is onething, but don't let it get in the way of thestory.

Remember the Rule of Right. If yourcharacter finds themselves trapped in amaze, keep their hand on the right walland keep making right turns wheneverthey're given a choice. Eventually they'llfind their way out.

Think Outside the BoxThere are some tactics that catch a GM off

guard, there are some that they are ready for.Below are some tactics that will help in

figuring out a certain obstacle or task.

Talk to nonplayer characters. There's alot of information out there that playersshould be able to discover by simplyasking, if they think of the right questionsto ask.

Check out the background. Talk topeople who knew the victim or big bad, like family or teachers or allies, pull outall the records you can get. Basically doyour research. The world of Charmed: Ageof Prophecy contains enough institutionsthat can be used to access information. Souse them. If you find yourself up againsta demon, check with others who mayhave faced such a threat (for example, neighboring covens, the local magicshop, etc.). Forewarned is forearmed.

Compare Notesand CombineTactics

The author ofthe article isquoted as saying,

QUOTE"One of the silliestthings I've seen in a mystery I've run was thecharacters withholding information from each other.I'd given each some information that, if put together, would have helped them solve the mystery. But thecharacters never thought to compare notes."

When trying to figure out a mystery, pulltogether and band your resources. As thesaying goes, "Two heads are better than one..."the same can be said for three or four heads, most of the time .

When dealt with large detective work, split up. When you're faced with amystery that involves some investigative

17

Page 18: Charmed RPG Player Handbook

The Player Handbook: Miscellaneous Information

work split up to check all the records andcarry out all the interviews you can. Tryto cover as much ground as possible, andthen come back when done to puttogether all the information gathered sothat everyone knows what everyone elsehas found out.

I hope some of you use these guidelinesand tips to help you when faced with anobstacle/problem/mystery that has beenthrown at your character. Honestly I'm gladwhen I see characters figuring out the solutionto things, and enacting them... thereforecausing me to sit back and think, "Damn. Theygot me." I like a challenge, so since I'm alwaysthrowing them out at you guys... why not tryand beat me at my own game. You neverknow... I just might reward you for it. Maybe.
