From the Principal: Introducing our new Marketing Manager

I would like to introduce you to our new Marketing Manager, Rebecca Craig.

Rebecca comes with considerable experience in the school arena. I’m sure you have already noticed a stronger Charlton presence on Facebook and there will be other changes that you will become aware of over the coming terms.

If you haven’t already “Liked” us on Facebook, why not do it now? I think reaching 1000 Likes by the end of the month would be really great.

Our calendar is now on Facebook and the link to this newsletter which contains lots of wonderful stories about what is happening at Charlton…as well as important dates, updates and news.

As I looked over our FB site just now I was reminded of all of the great things Charlton has been involved on over the past year: mission and service; Engineering and Science Challenges; Book Week Parade this week; sporting events with some

great winners and losers; Parents’ Association fundraising; Canteen fun; and much more.

Remember, none of these things happen without the involvement of our teaching and support staff. They go out of their way to make sure that your children have every opportunity to grow within a caring and fun, challenging and broadening family who love them and want the best for them, just like you!

But our children don’t always have to be happy to be doing well.

I love this blog from Jim Daley, CEO of Focus on the Family

“An unhappy child is a healthy child.” At first glance, that comment from Dr. Kevin Leman catches you off guard a little, doesn’t it? But dig a little deeper, and I think you’ll see what he means. There really are times when your son or daughter needs to be unhappy.

To find out why, read more.

Imitating Christ’s Humility

Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others…continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfil his good purpose.

Verse for the Week: Philippians 2:1-3, 13

FROM THE CHAPLAIN

When we think of faith, what comes to mind? These verses from the New Testament book of Philippians gives us a great framework for what faith in God looks like. Once a person has asked Jesus Christ to come and live in them, they begin a pro-cess whereby God begins to work in their lives. He begins changing our desires, making us more willing to draw near to Him and be like Him. What a mysterious process! What I love about these verses is that they lay the foundation of what it means to be united to Christ and then how we are meant to live that out. No beating around the bush. If you want to know if you belong to Christ, ask yourself if you are willing to be transformed to be more like Jesus!

CSSA State SoftballFive short weeks ago these girls signed up for the CSSA State Softball Gala Day, having never played or seen a game of softball before. With some intense training we did our best to prepare. Thankfully we were given a bye first up so the girls were able to see a game being played.

The first game was a bit overwhelming, but the girls really improved throughout the day. Their final game was against the top team. This was by far our best game, but the girls were outclassed by a very strong team.

Our girls showed great determination, sportsmanship and team spirit throughout the day and are really keen to return next year where there is a boys event planned. Having both a boys’ team and a girls’ team will help in getting match practice in the future.

Highlights were Maddy’s sensational outfield catch, Samantha’s expertise on 3rd base and Paige and Emily’s home runs in a game where the team went down by just one run. While our 3 pitchers Amy, De-Jay and Angelique weren’t as fast or accurate as our opponents, but their slower pitches troubled many batters who were used to the faster pitching.

Paige was named player’s player for her great performance as catcher, and her consistent batting.

Thank you to Mrs McKeown for assisting as Team Manager and scorer, and to Brett Gray and Louis Jarasius for volunteering to be base umpires for the day.

I look forward to seeing softball growing in the College in the future.

Can you help?As a community, it is a privilege to support staff and student families in times of need and crisis. In order to do this well, we need to know those in need so we can reach out in support and provide meals if they are wanted. You can help by:

1. Letting the College Chaplain know of any families who could use support. You can email him here.

2. Making a meal to bless someone else in need. We have containers with labels that we can give you!

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the way in which you all care for one another. It’s part of what makes this place so awesome!

CHARLTON REPRESENTED ATEquestrianYear 3 student Amelia Razon and Year 7 student Rose Ward, recently repre-sented Charlton Christian College in Equestrian. The competition was held

Amelia rode well and managed a second place in the Prep B test and a fifth place in the Prep C test on her horse Poppy. The points she received were enough for her to win the

overall Reserve Champion Preparatory Rider for Primary age student Yr3 -6.

Rose Ward from Year 7 also rode really well in very strong competition. She was out of the placings but scored well in her tests.

It was a great day with over 105 horses entered and students who came from all over the State.

The girls looked ‘fantastic’! We were

very proud of them both. Thank you for giving us this opportunity to

represent our school in our chosen sport.

CSSA Primary State AthleticsCongratulations to Year 6 student GRACE BAKER who has been named Age Champion of STATE (again)! Grace came 1st in Discus and High Jump and 2nd in the 100, 200 and 400m run.

This year both Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 teams made it to State for Metro Cup Soccer. Players, staff and parents all enjoyed a meal together the night before followed by ten pin bowling, air hockey, basketball and many more games.

The Senior team came third overall in the competition, but played tremendously well and gave 100% on the day. The team is to be commended for their efforts and sportsmanship. They really did us proud.

A HUGE thank you to all the parents and family members who attended and cheered the kids on. It was such an incredible atmosphere. Thank you so much!

State Metro Cup

“Wow we don’t deserve to be in Finals.

You were easily the best team we played

today. Unlucky”.

Innaburra CoachHighlights:Charlton went ahead early in their first game against Innaburra thanks to a goal from Bailey Snowden.

Goals to Cooper Chomicki, Jaydn Hewson, Bailey Snowden, Tenzin Pickles and Jack Drayton helped us to a comfortable 5-0 victory in our second game against Regents Park.

The last game of our pool round was against the much larger school of Northern Beaches. It was a very attacking game and the score was locked at 0-0 with 2 minutes to go. Unfortunately Northern Beaches broke through with only 90 seconds to go to win 1-0, but the experience and atmosphere was worth every second!

A wonderful result made even

better by their inexperience. Well done Mark and

team.

Mrs SkuthorpeOn Thursday 18th August, some of our students competed in the Hunter Valley Electric Vehicle Competition.

Approximately 25 teams competed in the event and our riders rode well finishing 3rd and 4th. This is Charlton’s third year competing in the event and it continues to inspire teams from around the country.

Our teams represented the College in their usual exemplary manner. They patiently wore down the opposition until only 2 bikes remained in front of them at the end. We are looking forward to having a larger presence at next year’s event and plan to enter another 2 teams, taking the total to 4 bikes. We need more riders and would like to invite other students from our College to get involved.

Congratulations to Jasper Connelly, Jamie Harrower, Daniel Boggs, Brett Gray and Chloe Gray. Thank you also to the parents for their support of this event.
