“We buy things as we fi nd them at auctions and junk shops.
The older things are, the better, even if they are shabby”
96 Lowveld Living
Typical of old farmhouses, the homestead on the outskirts of White River is characterised by large rooms and an erratic layout. Over the years, spaces have evolved organically to suit the family’s needs, and although the children have fl own the coup the home hasn’t lost an ounce of its lived-in feel.
Bluebell the cat and two exuberant Dalmatians named Kinsley and Huxley have free rein and can often be found snuggled up on a couch or a bed – “as if they own the world”.
Jess says she and David are unable to walk past an antique shop. “We buy things as we fi nd them at auctions and junk shops. The older things are, the better, even if they are shabby. We don’t like anything to look new or fi tted.”
They are passionate collectors of antique silver, pewter, old black and white family photos and colonial hunting pictures. These objects are loosely themed together and are on casual display alongside treasures found on the farm.

found in every room Right: The two big pictures
in the lounge are landscapes of the southern Drakensberg

lowveld living issue twenty-fivefeature design - eclectic livingDesign of an 8 page house feature for Lowveld Living’s 25th issue. For this feature design I was asked to join our photographer Murray Anderson-Ogle on-site to assist him in setting up shots for my design. We spent an hour trying to get this shot right with the family dogs, and had to eventually photoshop myself running with the dogs out of the image. We wanted to capture the “warm”, “welcoming”, “homey” characteristics of this dynamic farm house to open up the feature spread.

lowveld living issue twenty-fivecover design Since Lowveld Living had not put an issue out for an extended amount of time, I wanted this issue to stand out on the self. I decided on a simple image with bright colours to draw attention. For a finishing touch, I arranged with the printer to print the wallpaper pattern in gloss, with the rest of the cover matte to add some texture, and also got the masthead gold embossed. The cover photograph was taken by Murray Anderson-Ogle.

lowveld living issue twenty-twoupfront design - lowveld lowdownUpfront design for Lowveld Living’s 22nd issue. This was the first issue that I worked on with HomeGrown Magazines. Lowveld Lowdown highlights items to buy in the Lowveld area that are currently in style. This spread was one of the first pieces that I designed on my own for a magazine, and it improved my photoshop skills immensely. I had to deep-etch each item on this page from the original snaps taken by our photographer in the store. I also had to work with odd shaped images and design a well balanced spread.

judgessocial investment showcasecover design + upfront identity designWith an assortment of photographs for this project, the Senior Designer and myself came up with a variety of cover options. The final choice was unanimously made by the entire team that worked on this project. The goal of the cover was to display an element of the social investment showcase to help the reader understand this projects objective. I also contributed to the design of this magazine by developing the upfront identity, which I focused on being uncomplicated and corporate, but with an inviting feel.

deville luxury coffee and pastriesdisposable coffee-cup designA collaboration with some of my peers. We were hired on a volunteer basis by DeVille to design an identity for their disposable coffee cups. The owner had ordered thousands of plain cups, and we were asked to come up with a simple branding solution. We decided to design a rubber stamp. These stamps would include different stories written by the owner to give DeVille a personal touch, and solve their excess blank cup problem. These stamps are currently being used at both DeVille locations.

The Mpumalanga Agricultural Development Corporation (MADC) is in the
business of “people development”. We help emerging farmers get ahead by
funding viable agricultural enterprises and offering business advice, counselling,
training facilitation and access to markets.
AgriSETA has accredited our training courses in basic business management
principles and farm management.
Our specific mandate is to address imbalances in the sector where previously
disadvantaged individuals lack the basic means of production such as land,
machinery and capital.
That’s why we’ve created five specialised Agricultural Finance Products:
• The MADC Seasonal Loan: helps the farmer pay for production inputs needed
to produce the farm outputs. The loan is payable in full within the same year.
• The MADC Business Loan: helps farmers acquire new farm ventures or improve
existing farms. The loan funds assets, stock and working capital for the farm
venture. Repayments years are between five and eight years.
• The MADC Revolving Credit Facility – offered to existing business people
who seek financing to trade in the agricultural sector. This includes livestock
speculation and other reselling opportunities. Businesses have twelve months
to repay the loan.
• Small Equipment or Technology Loans –This loan is used to finance the
purchase of loose tools, small scale plant and machinery, irrigation and other
farming equipment
• Agricultural Enterprise Acquisition Scheme – This scheme is aimed at comple-
menting farmers to acquire agricultural enterprises through the LRAD programme.

homegrown magazines ltd.website designWhile working with HomeGrown Magazines, I was asked on my first work term to design a new website for their publishing house. With nothing to work from originally, the task was quite daunting. In the end they wanted a simple layout, that would be easy to update by other interns. I added a new element, the floral/grassy pattern you see featured, to HomeGrown’s identity on the website. This element was also carried throughout other branding for HomeGrown Magazines, including banners, business cards, etc.

mpumalanga business launchpaddouble-page spread advert design This advertisement was for HomeGrown Magazines business publication, Capital Magazine. This double-page spread was for the 2009 Mpumalanga Business Launchpad competition. The competition was struggling to find competitors to join so they placed an advert in our business magazine. The purpose of this advert was to get people to enter the competition, so I came up with a “10 reasons why you should enter” design to help the launchpad’s success.

document productionmagazine design - bleed magazineProject for a third year document production class. The objective of this assignment was to create a visual identity for a new magazine, as well as design 2 departments and 2 features. Displayed on the opposite page is the main feature design for my magazine called Bleed (referring to objects that extend beyond the edge of a printed page). In this project we explored the relationship between text and image, as well as applying the concepts of pacing, colour and format.

principles of graphicscover designs - print magazineThis is a third year project for a principles of graphics class. The project directive was to design a series of covers for print magazine with three themes; Design History, Contrast and Typography. I paid homage to William Morris and chose to use one of his wallpaper designs in combination with his poetry for my first cover. For Contrast, the perception that the right-side of the brain is the “creative” side; in my design I show the contrast between the sides of the brain. My typographic cover was done on my Everest typewriter to do a throwback on older typography.

pre-press techniquesfont bookThis is a third year project for a pre-press techniques course. The objective of this project was to create a font book for our personal use, with over 100 fonts of our choice. These selections must be divided into categories and include examples of each font. I decided to use the english pangram “ the quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dogs” that was originally used to test new typewriters and computer keyboards, to display my fonts. I also used this pangram to establish an identity for my book.

pre-press techniquescover design - robin’s eggThis is a third year project for a pre-press techniques course. The objective of this project was to prepare a series of 3 covers with a variety of colour schemes. The first scheme was to use hot colours & typography, the second was to be pattern-based with cool colours and the third to have a theme of our choice with at least 5 solid colours. I wanted all my covers to have a vintage feel, as seen with the “hot” typewriter, old clothing sewing pattern and the 1960’s colourful cover. The title of my magazine is a reference to the colour robin’s egg blue.
