"It was nice for our sen-iors to go out on a winningnote,” Charlevoix coachDon Jess said. “Kalkaskabattled hard and it was aback and forth game, wehad several kids step upand make plays when weneeded them, this teamhad its ups and downs, butalways played hard and I'mproud of them."

The Rayders jumped outto an early 12-0 lead, butthen the Blazers cameroaring back by scoring 20unanswered points before

Charlevoix was able to stopthe onslaught.

Charlevoix respondedwith a Potter 2-yard touch-down and a Jamael Kellyconversion to tie the con-test 20-20, before the Blaz-ers tacked on anothertouchdown to take a 26-20advantage heading into thefinal quarter.

Charlie Hamilton took a6-yard pass from TannerCatt to even the score at 26,and Kelly punched in theconversion for the finalscore of the night.

Charlevoix’s Marc Dur-kee preserved the Raydervictory with an intercep-tion with just over aminute remaining in thegame.

“I thought our offensiveline did a great job and An-drew Potter and JamaelKelly ran hard and did anice job of protecting theball,” Jess noted. “TannerCatt managed the gamewell from the QB position, and defensively, Marc Dur-kee once again came up

with a big interception for

us at the end.”

Catt finished 7-of-20 pass-

ing for 65 yards, while

Hamilton was the re-ciepant of five of thosepasses for 43 yards and the

CHARLEVOIX – Afterknocking off rival oppo-nents East Jordan andBoyne City on eachschool’s homecoming the

previous two weeks,Charlevoix looked to de-liver yet another victoryas they celebrated theirown homecoming. It wasnot meant to be, as ElkRapids was able to getpast the Rayders 7-6, on acold, wet and windy nighton October 14 at KipkeField.

The Elks were able toget into the end zone earlyand held their ground asthe Rayders threatenedbut were unable to punchit in after junior TommyZipp brought Charlevoixto within one on a 43-yardrun midway through thesecond quarter.

“It was nice to seeTommy break one,” Ray-der coach Don Jess said.“He's been working hardall season.”

After the score by Zipp, both teams were able tomaintain drives but bothcame up empty. Turnoversplayed a big role in stop-

ping some of those drives."I was very happy with

our kid’s effort tonight, itwas a nasty night and theweather didn't do us anyfavors, but that's typicalhomecoming weather forus,” said Jess. “We turnedthe ball over a few timesin the second half and Ithink that was the differ-ence in the ball game. ElkRapids did nice job run-ning the ball and eatingup the clock.”

Leading the Charlevoixoffense was junior JamaelKelly, as he piled up 58yards on 11 carries, whilesenior Andrew Potterrushed seven times for 40yards, and Charlie Hamil-ton caught three passesfor 24 yards.

Junior Andrew Robargeled Charlevoix’s defensewith 16 tackles and recov-ered a fumble, Potter wasclose behind with 14 tack-les, and Coby Herrimanalong with Greyson

Speigel each finished with11 tackles.

“Defensively, I thoughtRobarge and Potter hadreal good games,” Jessnoted. “We've got onemore game left and it willbe a challenge playing atKalkaska, it would be niceto see these seniors go outon a winning note."

Both teams now stand at3-5 overall, 3-3 conference.

Charlevoix Rayders wereentertained by opponentsHomecoming festivities, and for the second time, they were able to spoil theevening with a hardfought defensive effort incoming away with an 8-0,Lake Michigan Confer-ence victory at Earl Broth-erston Field on October 7.

After an opening driveby that saw the Ramblerspunt it away, the Raydersmoved the ball 39 yardsthat resulted in a BoyneCity defensive stand totake over on downs at theRambler 33-yard line, eachteam took turns puntingfor the remainder of thequarter.

Charlevoix then got onthe board first at the 9:32

mark of the second quar-ter as Boyne City quarter-back Jay Redman wastripped up in the endzone, making it 2-0 Ray-ders. Boyne City startedtheir drive at the Rambler2-yard line after a per-fectly placed punt by Ray-der Charlie Hamilton.

After the safety, eachteams returned to playingtough defense, resultingin more work from eachteams punter.

The lone touchdown ofthe game came after theCharlevoix defensestopped Boyne City on4th-and-9 with 3.5 secondsto go in the half. Instead ofsitting on the ball andbeing content with a 2-0lead, the Rayders went tothe air as quarterback An-drew Potter found an openHamilton who thenpitched the ball to a trail-ing Jamael Kelly whodarted into the end zone

for an 8-0 Charlevoix leadas time expired in the firsthalf. The two-point con-version attempt was nogood.

“This was an excitinggame to be a part of,” anelated Rayder coach DonJess said. “I knew going inthat Boyne would give usa heck of a game on theirhomecoming.
