is win was a great way toend the season, said Coach

of the way our sophomoresstepped up this season, and

    am happy they could end

    their junior varsity career

    Charlevoix Rayders nished

the season on a positive note,

    coming away with a 28-26

Lake Michigan Conferencevictory on October 21.

    Janael Kelly ran for 125

yards on 17 attempts and sen-

    ior Andrew Potter rushed for

102 yards on 22 carries and

scored a pair of touchdowns to

lead the Rayder offense."It was nice for our seniors

to go out on a winning note,

    Charlevoix coach Don Jess

said. Kalkaska battled hardand it was a back and forth

game, we had several kids step

up and make plays when we

needed them, this team had its

    ups and downs, but always

played hard and I'm proud ofthem."

    e Rayders jumped out to

an early 12-0 lead, but then the

    Blazers came roaring back by

    scoring 20 unanswered points

    before Charlevoix was able to

    stop the onslaught.

    Charlevoix responded with a

    Potter 2-yard touchdown and a

    Jamael Kelly conversion to tie

    the contest 20-20, before the

    Blazers tacked on another

touchdown to take a 26-20 ad-

    vantage heading into the nal

    quarter.

Charlie Hamilton took a 6-yard pass from Tanner Catt to

even the score at 26, and Kelly

    punched in the conversion for

the nal score of the night.

    Charlevoixs Marc Durkee

    preserved the Rayder victory

    with an interception with just

over a minute remaining in the

    game.

    I thought our offensive line

did a great job and Andrew

    Potter and Jamael Kelly ran

hard and did a nice job of pro-

    tecting the ball, Jess noted.

    Tanner Catt managed the

game well from the QB posi-

    tion, and defensively, Marc

    Durkee once again came up

with a big interception for us at

    the end.

    Catt nished 7-of-20 passing

goal line on a fumble recovery

that he took back 43 yards.

    tackles, Greyson Speigle had

    East Jordan 26, HarborSprings 22

HARBOR SPRINGS eEast Jordan Red Devils endedthe season on a very high note,as they were able to overcome

a 22-13 decit with 2:35 to goand turn it into a 26-22 seasonending victory on October 21,and ending a 26-game skidthat dated back to the 2008season.

What a game, East Jordancoach Allan Peterson said. Webattled till the end, and theyearned the result.

Harbor Springs opened thescoring in the rst quarter togo up 7-0, and extended that toa 14-7 lead going into halime.e Red Devil score came on a13-yard pass from sophomoreNoah Bacchus to Dustin Mel-lios. Harbor added another

score with 5:26 le in the thirdquarter to make it 22-7.

ats when things started togo the Red Devils way. Sopho-more Ben Walton recovered aRams fumble in HarborSprings territory at the 2:40mark and a few plays later,

sophomore Tim Schutt raced24-yards for a touchdown topull East Jordan to within 22-13.

e score would stay thatway until Bacchus connectedagain with Mellios for theirsecond 13-yard touchdown

with 2:35 remaining in thegame, bringing East Jordan towithin a eld goal, at 22-19.

With the crowd getting intoit, the East Jordan defense, be-hind the leadership of WyattWerner and a slew of Red Dev-ils, they were able to force aRam fumble, the ball shot upin the air and into the out-stretched arms of senior JohnRichards, who corralled theball and raced 48 yards to pay-dirt to put East Jordan up 25-22 with 1:43 remaining. JoshRathbun booted the extrapoint for a 26-22 lead andwhat would be the nal scor-

ing of the night.East Jordan improved to 1-8

    overall, 1-6 conference withthe victory.

e Red Devils were led of-fensively by Werner, whorushed for 93 yards on ninecarries, and Schutt who

pounded out 69 hard foughtyards on 11 carries and a score.Bacchus, the sophomore quar-terback, threw for 48 yards.Mellios nished with three re-ceptions, for 46 yards and apair of touchdowns.

Noah did a good job in

there, Peterson said. Hemade good decisions andthrew the ball well. Our offen-sive line, which includes threesophomores, gave him thetime he needed as well.

Defensively, Walton was awrecking machine, as herecorded 20 tackles on thenight, while Richards and Mel-lios each chipped in with 12apiece. Marcus Wingate had11, and Rathbun, Josh John-ston and Zach Shepard all n-ished with six tackles each.

Were real proud of thekids, Peterson noted. All theadversity they went through,

we needed the win, this issomething we can build onand go forward. I enjoyedworking with the seniors, theywere fun, and we are going tomiss them, and Im glad theystayed with it.

Many houses and apartmentsbuilt before 1978 have paint thatcontains high levels of lead (calledleadbased paint). Lead from paint, chips, and dust can pose serioushealth hazards if not taken care ofproperly.

If you suspect that your house

has lead hazards, you can take someimmediate steps to reduce your

    family's risk:

    Clean up paint chips immedi-

    ately.

    Clean oors, window frames,

    window sills, and other surfaces

weekly. Use a mop, sponge, or paper

towel with warm water and a gen-

eral all-purpose cleaner or a cleaner

    made specically for lead.

    oroughly rinse sponges and

mop heads aer cleaning dirty or

    dusty areas.

    Wash children's hands oen, es-

pecially before they eat and before

    nap and bed time.

Keep play areas clean. Washbottles, paciers, toys, and stuffed

animals regularly. Keep children from chewing

window sills or other painted sur-

    faces.

    Clean or remove shoes before

entering your home to avoid track-

    ing in lead from soil.

    Make sure children eat nutri-

tious, low-fat meals high in iron

    and calcium.

    In addition to day-to-day clean-

    ing and good nutrition:

    You can temporarily reduce

lead hazards by taking actions such

    as repairing damaged painted sur-

faces and planting grass to cover

    soil with high lead levels.

To permanently remove leadhazards, you must hire a certied

lead "abatement" contractor. Abate-ment (or permanent hazard elimi-

    nation) methods include removing,

    sealing, or enclosing lead-based

    paint with special materials. Just

painting over the hazard with regu-

    lar paint is not enough.

    When remodeling your home it

    is particularly important to be

aware of lead-based paint and take

the proper measures to keep your

family safe. If not conducted prop-

    erly, certain types of renovations

can release lead from paint and dust

into the air.an already difficult situ-

    ation.
