IC Covington, KY is a municipality directly across the Ohio River from downtown Cin-

cinnati, OH. The city has a vast collection of historic Italianate architecture, but it is ex-tremely fragmented. To reconnect the city, my studio collaborated with public officials and local developers to produce The Covington Center City Action Plan.

Framework Plan

Vision Diagram

The framework I created compre-hensively projects future land use and gateways that would strategi-cally spark economic develop-ment.

Each student chose a corridor or site to revitalize. Keeping in mind how each student’s project con-nects to one another was crucial. The bold, brown dashed line indicates the corridor I chose to redesign.

COVINGTON, KY

R E C O N N A I S S A N C E

I chose to redevelopment the 12th St/MLK corridor using New Urbanism principals, historic preservation, and infill development. My approach: infilling vacant and under utilized properties with green space and mixed use residential/retail development; inte-grating new development with existing historic buildings; advancing infrastructure to ac-commodate pedestrian and biker traffic; targeting empty-nesters; and joining forces with public officials, non profit organizations, private developers, and financial institutions.

Determining main intervention areas and identifying parcel ownership, right of ways, and existing land uses were my main tools for analysis.

To create a strong sense of place, I chose to design my project around the idea of urban objects and urban walls.

The corridor is an eyesore for many but is unique be-cause of its historic character.

Buildings range from two to five stories in height, with 20ft by 30ft unit dimensions. Accommodated parking lots are located in the rear of the buildings.

OLDHAM COUNTY, KY

The Floyds-Fork watershed in Northern Kentucky is a fast past developing area. The purpose of this analysis was to determine the most suitable loca-tions for commercial development within the watershed.

Criteria for these locations include land cover char-acteristics, degree of slopes, riparian zones, and soil types.

Land cover Suitability

Slope Suitability

In regards to slope and land cover, open and agri-cultural landscapes with 0-5% tree cover and slopes between 0-5% are the most desirable factors when de-termining suitable land for commercial development.

Soil Suitability

Riparian Zones

Areas without riparian buffers and flood plains are also considered desirable locations for commercial land use.

According to the Oldham County GIS database, there are 34 soil types within the watershed. The 75% of the soils have a low rate of infiltration when thoroughly wet and have a slow rate of water trans-mission. They consist of fine texture which impede downward movement of water.

I collaborated with two other students to work on a project that focused on claiming residual spaces in the contemporary city.

We chose a district in Cincinnati that had an abundance of vacant lots, left over and in-between spaces, under used parking lots, and other residual spaces.

The challenge was to find innovative ways to re-integrate the residual spaces into the city, restore natural and ecological connections, and improve the quality of life for the inhabitants of the area.

The program includes the types of land uses for each zone, the number of units per land use, the unit dimensions, and the total square footage of each zone.

The site will include two 5 story mixed use apartment buildings with commercial uses at grade level.

On street parking is also proposed with a structured parking facility to accommodate resident’s vehicles.

Amberley Village, Ohio asked our studio to be the consul-tants for a redevelopment scheme to transform a former 130 acre golf course into a project that included residen-tial, institutional, commercial, and agricultural uses.

I worked on the institutional portion of the project, which included an amphitheater, gardens, new surface park-ing, and the renovation of an existing building.

These scenes are Sketch-Up models I created. I helped produce the AutoCAD drawings that were imported into Sketch-Up.

The majority of my work at the company was devoted to design-ing a mega project called Gezhenpu. 40,000 to 60,000 upper class residents are expected to live in the new town.

Dalian is a port city in North-East China. While interning at Da-lian Design and Urban Development Co., I worked on a variety of large scale projects, many of which are considered new towns.

AL While interning at Street-Works LLC, I worked exten-

sively on a redevelopment project for downtown De-troit, MI.

The idea was to create unique districts for the down-town and the area surrounding it to spark revitalization.

Another major project I worked on at Street-Works was the redevelopment of Quincy Center in Quincy, MA.

The site is where John Quincy Adams was buried and draws in over 1.5 million visitors each year.

The 3D models of the redevelopment needed to be updated constantly and I was given the opportunity to make those changes.
