Numbers as Labels and for Counting

•Use some number names accurately in play•Count up to three or four objects•Count up to six objects from a larger group•Say and use number names in order in familiar contexts•Count reliably up to ten everyday objects•Recognise numerals 1 to 9•Use developing mathematical ideas and methods to solve practical problems•Recognise, count, order, write and use numbers up to 20

Provide opportunities to see and use numbers both inside and outside

•Counting the number of children in the class / how many children are having sandwiches or dinners ?•Singing number songs and number rhymes•Playing number games•Role play area – setting the table, 4 cups & 4 saucers•Using telephones and keyboards in play areas•Taking maths outside•Making numbers visible both inside the classroom and outside

Calculating•Respond to the vocabulary involved in addition and subtraction in rhymes and games•Begin to make comparisons between quantities•Finds one more or one less from a group of up to five objects•In practical activities and discussion, begin to use the vocabulary involved in adding and subtracting•Use language such as “more” or “less” to compare two numbers•Find one more or one less than a number from one to ten•Begin to relate addition to combining two groups of objects and subtraction to “taking away”•Uses developing mathematical ideas and methods to solve practical problems•Uses a range of strategies for addition and subtraction, including some mental recall of number bonds

Mathematical language / vocabulary is very important and the more language children can acquire at a young age will make mathematical development easier as they progress through school.
