The CC initiative encourages openness and wider communication of research

Started by Prof. Lessig to make research freely accessible

In Uganda, NABOTU, CEHURD and most recently CUUL (Consortium of Uganda University Libraries) lead the CC Initiative

The Uganda Creative Commons License was launched in 2012

Earlier, demonstration projects to assess the economic viability of CC was done by Fountain Publishers; FEMRITE. In the UK, Bloomsbury Academic

Forges a balance inside traditional “all rights reserved” setting in copyright law- “Some rights reserved” and “no rights reserved”

PALM Africa- researched how the application of flexible licensing would improve access to learning materials in Africa

Uganda and South Africa Demonstration projects yielded 10 titles

licensed under CC in Uganda A Uganda CC license is available for use

Universities could require the use of CC licenses on materials for which they hold copyright

Students dissertations, lecture notes, research papers etc could use CC Uganda

CC Uganda licenses could be the default licenses for institutional repositories.
