Greetings Brother Knights. October was a busy month. The Tootsie Roll roadblock was a success with many volunteers helping to collect money for People with Intellectual Disabilities. Thanks to all the volunteers who made the roadblock a big success. Without your help we could not provide the funds distributed each year at the Derby Awards Banquet.

The following weekend we served lunch to 135 people at the Cathedral soup kitchen. We also delivered 80 pounds of food to the soup kitchen. Thanks to all those who contributed to the food drive and those who came to prepare and serve lunch to the homeless. The food drive continues, keep the cans of food coming.

The council purchased a table at the banquet and auction for the Golden Arrow Charity Fund Drive. The Golden Arrow in conjunction with the Schuhmann Center and the Pregnancy Resource Center provides assistance to mothers and children. The auction was very lively with bids that were very generous.

This was followed up with the Halloween Party at the park. We had many spooks and goblins share in the food and the hay ride through the haunted grounds. Everyone enjoyed the evening. Many thanks to the volunteers who created the haunted grounds, prepared and served the food and refreshments and of course returned to clean up and put away the exhibits.

By the end of October we will have inducted five new members to our Council. The new members are Joe Cavallo, Brad Curry, Robert Glover, David Heintzman, and Dennis Nash. When you next see these gentleman welcome them to the Knights of Columbus and our council.

November will be an equally busy month. Starting on November 5th there is a second and third degree exemplification at the Taylorsville Council starting at 9 am. For all 1st degree members who wish to advance, this is your last opportunity for the 2nd and 3rd degree before the 4th degree exemplification to be held here in Louisville in February. Mark your calendar now and contact Paul Martin or myself if you wish to participate.

Next on the schedule, November 6 is the Bishop Spalding Golf Scramble. Load your team with sandbaggers and contact Pete Manning or Pat Sheehy to reserve your spot. This is an enjoyable day on the golf course with the proceeds going to the charity fund, followed by a meal in the evening at the council.

November 9th is the Mass of Remembrance to commemorate members who have died this year.

Our blood drive is being held November 20 on the first floor of the council. The time is from 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm. You may schedule an appointment by visiting redcrossblood.org and enter Sponsor Keyword KOC. You may also call 800-733-2767. Give the perfect gift, Give Blood.

On November 24th at 10:00 AM we have our Thanksgiving Mass celebrated by Father Pius Poff.

This year Council 2761 is sponsoring a “Keep Christ in Christmas” poster contest. There are 3 age categories, 5-7, 8-10, and 11-14. The posters are judged based on Slogans, Visuals, and Overall Impact. Entry forms may be picked up at the council. Each poster must include the entry form. This is open to all children. Invite relatives, friends, and neighbors to participate. The deadline to have the poster submitted is December 7.

Everyone did notice the pot holes in the parking lot have disappeared!!!

BOAT DOCKS & HURRICANE DECK – As I write this we have twenty (20) days left before the docks will be cleared, the boats gone to their winter homes wherever that may be, and we look forward to next spring and a new boating season. Thursday, November 10th about 9 AM the water on the docks will be turned off and the water pipes taken apart and laid on the docks. Saturday, November 12th, 9 AM, the dock take down party begins in earnest. The panel boxes, lights and water pipes are all moved off the docks and up either to the top of the bank or the concession stand for winter storage. Hurricane deck will be cleared of tables and lights.

PARK & POOL – A very successful and enjoyable Halloween Children’s Party was held on Saturday evening, October 22nd. With special thanks to Dennis Boose, PGK Greg Johnson, GK Rick Ratterman and all the Halloween characters that helped make it a real adventure for the kids (and some older kids!) that took the hayride around the upper parking lot and through the back yard behind the pool. There were a number of strange and frightful characters along the way. Thanks also to Carl Yates for the Spooky Stories. The chili, bean soup, hot dogs and refreshments were very well received and helped knock the chill off. What a crowd, over 100, which included 58 kids, attended and there were some very interesting adults as customers.

Dennis and crew will now winterize the concession stand, bathrooms and showers and start planning for next spring’s make ready parties.

CLUBHOUSE – First, I want to acknowledge and thank our own K of C Boat Club Officers and members who donated the funds to the Corporation to pay for the renewal of our State ABC license. This has been an annual gesture that they have done for many years. The Metro ABC license does not come due until January and the Columbia Ladies usually cover that renewal fee. What would our clubhouse be without our BARS?

Just a reminder there are three (3) very important events that will take place in our clubhouse during the month of November: Wednesday, November 9th, 7 PM, 2nd Floor, our Council and 4th Degree has our annual MASS OF REMEMBRANCE. DD Ken Rosenbaum advised that we have lost twenty five (25) Brother Knights since last November and that he has sent invitations to the families of those Knights to join us at Mass. Sunday, November 20 we host our Annual Thanksgiving Buffet from 5-8 PM, adults $12.00 and children 12 and under $6.00. Chef Ron always puts out a buffet that will satisfy your taste buds and has a number of the traditional Thanksgiving menu items, including turkey & dressing, ham, fried chicken & his own meat loaf. PLEASE MAKE RESERVATIONS (893-2220) IF YOU ARE COMING. This number not only helps Ron in his preparation planning, but also gives us the necessary information to have the 2nd floor properly set up.

Knights Corporation newsBy: John auBrey

Last event, but not the least is our Annual Thanksgiving Day Mass, Thursday, November 24th, 2nd floor, 10 AM. Father Poff will be celebrating both of the Masses for us on the 9th and Thanksgiving Day, the 24th. I suspect each of us has plenty to be thankful for and what a simple way to express that thanks.

TOOTSIE ROLL DRIVE 2016 – I want to specifically thank Brother Knight Mark J. Finley for his support of our roadblocks at 42, 22 & Herr Lane. For years he has provided certain items that we need at the roadblocks and I just want him and his company to know they are truly appreciated.

The roadblocks this year for the three days collected more revenue than last year; the apostles are all responding well and our first page Honor Roll only needs a few more $100 donations to also surpass last year’s page. IF YOU HAVE NOT SENT A CHECK FOR $100 OR MORE we still have this month and next to do it. Your name(s) will appear on the front page HONOR ROLL.

FOURTH DEGREE PAPERBACK BOOKS FOR VETS – Remember to keep saving the paperback books after you read them and bring them to the clubhouse. F/N Ledweg is also looking to connect with some homes where VETS live and provide them with some books.

Don’t forget to bring those aluminum cans to the clubhouse; the dumpster is only half full right now. The last load brought almost $200 for our council Charity Fund.

On behalf of myself and my family and the board of directors and their families have a Happy Thanksgiving and thanks for your support of all that we do here at our clubhouse.

As we enter the upcoming holiday season, let us consider and give thanks for all the blessings we have. Many thanks to those who attended our last 4th Degree meeting in 2016. Special thanks are due to SK Joe Paul for the wonderful meal and SK Ron and Lady Segars for the delicious desserts. Instead of our regular meeting next month, we will have our Mass of Remembrance at 7

PM on November 9th, commemorating the Knights and council members who passed away this year. Many thanks to Ken Rosenbaum and SK Dennis Bosse for stepping up to make this event happen since I will be out of town. Then on Thanksgiving Day, November 24th, we will have morning Mass on the first floor at 10 AM. Our Faithful Friar, Father Pius Poff will celebrate both Masses supported by the 4th Degree Color Corps in full regalia. Please mark your calendars and help us say thanks to our deceased members and pay homage to their memory.

We have been recently asked by the State District Deputy to host the next 4th Degree Exemplification at our facility on Saturday, February 4, 2017. We are still working out the details. The 4th Degree is the Patriotic Degree of the Knights of Columbus. If you are not yet a member, would you consider joining and stand along with those who have served in the Armed Forces to keep our country safe? We are always in need of a few good men dedicated to God and Country. Membership is open to all 3rd Degree members and there is no requirement to be a Veteran. The 4th Degree exemplification at our hall this coming February would be an excellent time to consider joining.

Also, did you know that 25% of all American Armed Forces are Catholic, but Catholic priests only make up less than 8% of chaplains? At present there are only 209 priests serving over 300,000 Catholics in uniform who are scattered across the world. The Knights of Columbus actively supports the Catholic Military Fund.

Our Books for Vets program is working so well that we have filled all the available book storage space at the VA hospital. Keep the paper back books coming in though, I am checking with the Veterans homes in the area to see if they would like the books as well.

Don’t forget about our 10th Annual Golf Charity Scramble at Noon on Saturday, November 6. Contact SK Pete Manning (589-4717) if interested. And lastly, elections for President of the United States and other national and local offices will soon be here November 8. It is each and everyone’s civic duty to elect our leaders. Please get out and vote and remember the values we were all raised on and also the rights of the unborn.

- Respectfully, SK Joe Ledweg, F/N

Think You are Too Old for Permanent Life Insurance Coverage? Maybe Not

You are never too young or too old to consider purchasing life insurance. If you have a financial need for coverage, or will in the future, a permanent life insurance policy can be just the thing you need.

When you are young and presumably healthy, coverage will be very inexpensive when compared to purchasing the same policies when you are older.

If you’ve put off purchasing coverage, or you realize that you may need additional insurance, the Order may still be able to help you, even if other companies cannot. In fact, in 2012, the issue age of our permanent life insurance products was extended to age 80, and in 2014, the issue age of our term insurance was extended to age 70. Naturally, your health, and whether or not you smoke, will be taken into consideration, so underwriting standards for risk and age apply. But, the exten-sions are a great blessing for me- and it could be for you too. Are you or one of our Brother Knights one of those members?Whether you are 18 or 80, the Knights of Columbus has prod-ucts that will work for you and your family. I look forward to discussing coverage with you.

Hi Ladies, well it seems like fall is finally upon us. We haven’t even had Thanksgiving, but Christmas decorations are in the stores. It seems to come faster every year.

I want to thank Roberta Rosenbaum, Kathy French, and Kar-en Segars for Co-Chairing our annual Grab Bag sale which was held at our last meeting. We did not have a great turn out this year, but thanks to everyone that was there, we did have a good sale with all proceeds going to the Ladies Club.

We will be making a Christmas ornament or decoration at our November meeting. Rosi McGrath is putting this to-gether. In the past she has come up with some very cute ideas. Please make it a point to come to the meeting and make your ornament, talk to your fellow members and have a good time.

Churchill Downs day is Wednesday, November 16. Cost is $24.00 per person. If you would like to go, please check with Bobbie Jean Aubrey. As of today, there are six seats left. Please bring check (payable to Columbia Ladies) to the meeting.

Columbia Capersby Becky Bosse

Our attendance prize did not go out at the last meeting, so it will be $10.00 at the November meeting. Just a reminder! We still have a few members who have not paid their dues! The door prize which was fall towels and candy dishes was won by Penny Burns. Split the Pot first prize was won by Karen Segars with second prize going to Penny Burns.

Our birthdays for November are Judy Koenig, Barbara Shee-han, and Mary Wagner. Happy Birthday ladies. Celebrate well!
