Hi everyone,

As we enter the autumn season Christmas is already on the menu and the decorative holly is already being splashed around (in the magazine of course, not at home!) Christmas menus are now available at many of our local restaurants and pubs, so don’t leave your Christmas party bookings to the last minute. Firewood and chimney sweeping is on the agenda to prepare us for those cosey nights by the fi re.

I’m particularly looking forward to this winter, as I hope to save loads of money on my heating bills, I’ve just had a wood burner installed that links up to my central heating. It was installed in June (thanks to Bruce from Bensko), and with all that horrible weather we had I actually lit the fi re to give it a good test. I can’t believe we had an evening in front of the fi re in June. It worked brilliantly, I was beginning to think my gas bill would require a second mortgage, it’s becoming ridiculous. My new challenge for the winter is to tame my electricity bill, but to

do this I must educate my teenage son with the help of a newly aquired power monitor. He could do with his own wind tubine just to power his bedroom, it closely resembles the bridge of the Star Ship Enterprise.

This month I have instroduced new content for “Kid’s Corner”, courtesy of Pheonix comics, I hope our junior readers enjoy it. Anyway enough of my ramblings, make the most of this month, get out there and enjoy the outdoors while you can, the clocks go back on Sunday 28th October and the nights will soon be closing in.

Have a great month!

~ Debbie

the garden

4

OctoberSo once more, its time to be putting the garden to bed for the winter months. The runners have all been cleared out but I have left the roots in until Spring, wanting to keep the nitrogen nodules as long as possible in the ground. Now I must tell you that I had a reasonable crop of runners, not as good as usual as I couldn’t get any of my favourite seed Enorma, but not too bad. However I was chatting to a young lady who lived in Winchelsea and apparently the crops in that area were appalling. We discussed what the cause could have been, weather, bees, etc, but couldn’t come up with an answer. Her runners set fl owers and she grew sweet peas by the row, so they were happily pollinated by bees, but the bean never set. Like us, her original bean row rotted in the ground and she had to replant three times. Perhaps even after all that time the ground could have still been too cold. We shall never know the cause. Mother Nature again?

I had a reasonable crop of parsnips, they always taste better when they are home grown, and cook so much quicker. Try them mashed with potatoes for a topping on you next Shepherds Pie. It will be a real treat. My leeks I shall leave in, just pulling those that I want when I want them and as for the spring onions? The less said about those the better. I think I got about ten from the row. I will never know why I can’t grow spring onions. They started off so promisingly, then it all went to pot. (and yes I have tried growing them in pots).

After I have cleaned out the vege patch, I spread over the spent compost from my tubs etc and give a top dressing of chicken manure and my lovely 3X manure, lightly forking it into the top. (That is after I have pre-warned the neighbour!!) I have got to say I am always happy once the garden clean up is fi nished and I give a sigh of relief once its done. Then, with the help of husband, its time to tackle the greenhouse. (yuk) I turf everything out and give it a good clean and tidy round, turning over the ground shingle. I check all the pots that I store in there evicting any creatures I come across.

the garden

Then wash the pots over. I think the greenhouse is harder to deal with than the garden itself. Perhaps its psychological or the fact you tend to spend more time on your knees!

I have already started potting up my bulbs ready for the Spring, this I started in September. I’m using the bulbs kept from last year. I just lifted them, let them dry in the sun, trim the roots and the dead foliage from the tops, and using old fruit bags which I kept from buying oranges and the like, stored them on a lower shelf in the greenhouse. I must admit that a mouse got in and had a good lunch at my expense on some crocus bulbs, but I don’t mind sharing too much. After all they had multiplied (the crocus that is not the mouse!!!) I have also lifted the geraniums from the patio and potted them on into 7” pots. I take off all fl owers or fl owering shoots, clean them over removing dead or rough looking leaves. Give them a tiny drink and put in the now clean greenhouse to overwinter. I only give them a drink during the winter months if they look particularly parched. I keep removing any fl ower shoots as soon as they appear, so all nourishment goes to the plant itself. Other than that, just leave them to do their own thing.

Sitting here I have been thinking of the garden and what has been going on, and I must admit that the clematis over the second rose arch (baby blue eyes), has not done as well this year. To start with it fl owered well but fi nished abruptly in middle August. Normally I would have had a second fl ourish of fl owers, but they didn’t appear. I shall see what occurs next year, if it’s the same then we shall investigate.

Well for once I am bang on time for coff ee, how’s that for timing. Today its mincemeat slices with an almond topping. Which reminds me (sorry) that Christmas is just around the corner!

12Timber Timber boards are a fabulous choice: available in a range of colours and patterns, they just get more attractive as they age. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to recondition an existing wood fl oor; otherwise, choose new hardwood from an environmentally friendly source, or perhaps seek out recycled boards in architectural salvage yards. Solid wood fl oors can be sanded, painted, limed, stained, waxed or varnished. Cheaper, but less long-lasting, are either a multi-layered or veneered wood fl oor, where the surface is a thin layer of hardwood attached to a base of cheaper wood, MDF, cork or plywood; or a wood-eff ect fl oor, in which a photograph of wood is bonded to a chipboard base and protected with a high-pressure laminate surface.

CarpetCarpet is another great choice: soft, warm and quiet underfoot. There are two main types: woven, which is harder-wearing and more expensive, and tufted, the durability of which is related to its pile height and density (short, dense pile is the toughest). Natural wool looks beautiful and is long-lasting and fi re-resistant, but expensive; while cheaper, man-made fi bres may look unattractive or not wear well. A popular solution is a combination of the two (perhaps 80% wool and 20% nylon). Finally, remember that a good quality underlay

is essential.

Natural fi bresIn a wide range of colours and weaves, sisal, coir, seagrass, rush and jute are warm and soundproof and, often, good value for money. As you’d expect, the rougher the surface, the more hard-wearing it will be – so you may fi nd sisal and coir uncomfortable underfoot at fi rst. Jute has the softest feel, but is the least durable. As with carpet, a stain inhibitor is advisable for natural fi bre fl ooring.

Hard surfacesSandstone, limestone, granite, marble and terrazzo are expensive fl oorings that last a lifetime, though they are hard, noisy and cold underfoot. In areas that might get wet, such as kitchens or bathrooms, choose a version that is matt or slightly textured – sanded for a rough fi nish, or riven for an attractive, hand-split eff ect. Terracotta and ceramic tiles have similar qualities but are cheaper and off er less of a luxury look. Ceramic tiles are heat- and water-resistant, hard-wearing and low maintenance. They vary widely in price and come in a vast array of shapes, sizes and designs, but all are liable to crack if something is dropped on them.

Sheet fl ooringSofter and warmer than stone or timber, sheet fl oorcoverings – vinyl, linoleum and cork –

13

are relatively inexpensive and straightforward to lay (even on slightly uneven fl oors), and are easy to clean. Lino is a traditional material made from natural ingredients, and has its own lovely patina, while vinyl is a PVC-based man-made material, which comes in a huge range of textures and patterns, many of them good imitations of stone, wood or ceramic tiles. Cork, often under-rated, is hard-wearing, resilient to water and off ers an interesting, natural look.

RugsWith any fl ooring other than carpet, you will probably want to put down one or more rugs, adding softness, colour and extra interest. A rug can disguise poor fl ooring – and can be taken with you when you move. Often a good starting point for a decorative scheme, rugs come in an infi nite variety of shapes and sizes, textures and colours, patterns and prices. There’s a wonderful range of hand-made rugs from around the world, including Indian dhurries, Greek fl okatis, Middle Eastern kelims and French aubussons. Modern machine-made rugs can be very attractive, and you can even have a rug woven to your own design.

Unusual Choices• A leather fl oor (tiles or sheets) is warm,

soft and quiet underfoot, and requires little more than regular buffi ng and waxing. It wears well, too – scuff s and marks acquired over the years are part of its attraction.

• Concrete fl oors, though cold and hard, can be dyed in innumerable colours and given an interesting variety of fi nishes, from polished to painted.

• Rubber fl oors have a cool, stylish look and are great for waterproofi ng bathrooms. They come in tile or sheet form, and can be solid-coloured or patterned, smooth or studded.

• Bamboo is thoroughly environmentally friendly, being fast-growing and ever-regenerating. The stems are laminated together to form boards as strong as wood, then coated with lacquer for a durable surface.

Seasonal Recipe

Autumn PuddingAutumn Pudding

Place the sugar and 200ml of cold water in a large pan and heat gently until the sugar has dissolved. Add the sliced apples and simmer for 5-10 minutes until just tender. Add the rest of the fruit and simmer for a further 2-3 minutes. Leave to cool.

Remove the crusts from the bread slices. Use a round cookie cutter to stamp out a circle from one slice of bread to fi t the base of a 1.2 litre pudding basin. Cut the remaining slices of bread in half.

Carefully strain half of the fruit syrup from the cooled fruit into a shallow dish. Lightly dip most of the slices of bread into the syrup and arrange around the side of the pudding basin, overlapping them slightly to completely line the basin. Dip the bread circle into the syrup and press into the bottom of the basin.

Spoon the fruit into the lined basin, pressing down gently with the back of a spoon. Use the remaining slices of bread to cover the fruit fi lling completely and spoon over any remaining syrup.

Place a saucer on top of the basin and weigh it down with 2-3 food cans. Chill in the fridge overnight. To serve, carefully turn the pudding out onto a plate and decorate with extra sliced fruit.

CHARITY CHRISTMAS GIFT and CARD SALE

Saturday 27th October10.00 – 3.00

Smarden Charter Hall

Begun in 1985 this event continues to be one of the highlights of the village calendar, attracting visitors from all over Kent. The event raised over £4000 for 18 charities last year! It is also a great place to enjoy tea and cake with friends or a bowl of soup at lunchtime.

A wide range of Gifts, including Stocking Fillers as well as Christmas cards will be on sale. This is the perfect place to start your Christmas shopping.

18 charities will attend ranging from major national ones to smaller less well known and local Kent-based charities. At time of going to print they await confi rmation but are likely to include Multiple Sclerosis, Pilgrim’s Hospice, Kent Air Ambulance, Tear Fund, British Heart Foundation, Labrador Rescue, Cystic Fibrosis, R.N.L.I., Oxfam, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Mencap, Lupus, Save the Children, Cancer Research UK, and Guide Dogs for the Blind. The Samaritans will also join us for the fi rst time this year.

The stalls are run by people from local villages and the Ashford, Maidstone and Weald area. They love coming to Smarden and will provide a warm welcome. Here’s what some have told us:

The atmosphere in the village hall is so warm and friendly that we have never felt like ‘outsiders’ and always thoroughly enjoy the day (Lupus)

To be involved in such a long-standing and well organised event is always a pleasure. The Smarden Charity Card Sale is very worthwhile for RABI. It has a very friendly atmosphere in superb surroundings (Royal Agricultural Benevolent Society)

So please make a date in your diary, tell your friends and drop in to start your Christmas shopping here in the village! Finally I would really welcome off ers of help to run the Raffl e; if you can spare an hour or two between 10.00 and 3.00 please let me know.

Many thanksGill Bromley Organiser 01233 [email protected]

If My Body Was a Car If my body was a car, this is the time I would be thinking about trading it in for a newer model. I‛ve got bumps and dents and scratches in my fi nish and my paint job is getting a little dull ... But that‛s not the worst of it.

My headlights are out of focus and it‛s espe-cially hard to see things up close

My traction is not as graceful as it once was. I slip and slide and skid and bump into things even in the best of weather.

My whitewalls are stained with varicose veins.

It takes me hours to reach my maximum speed. My fuel rate burns ineffi ciently.

But here‛s the worst of it --

Almost every time I sneeze, cough or sput-ter, either my radiator leaks or my exhaust backfi res!

Education.... A man is stopped by the police at midnight and asked where he‛s going.

“I‛m on the way to listen to a lecture about the effects of alcohol and drug abuse on the human body.”

The policeman asks, “Really? And who‛s going to give a lecture at this time of night?” “My wife”
