INTRODUCTION

Music as agreed by almost all of us from the era that we are living right now is a

great mind escape from the reality. We often listen to songs formed from the music to boost

up our mood on doing something, upbeat music for working out or lullaby song to get to the

bed, or simply just listening to the music to bring back the old memories for example. Music

is highly influenced with culture as this is because, every culture have their own music

played, either for ritual or for entertainment. The emotions, expressions so as the situations

of music depend on not only culture, but also religions and periods of time. As for today,

there are many genres of music existed and all those genres are the evolution of the music

from the previous periods of time. In this assignment, the characteristics of music from

medieval, renaissance, classical, romantic, 20th century and punk rock be discussed.

MUSIC DURING MEDIEVAL AGES

Medieval ages or also known as middle ages lasted from 5 th to 15th century. The last

part of medieval age merged with the dawn of renaissance. This era begin with the fall of the

Western Roman Empire. The main form of music during this age was the Gregorian chant.

This type of music was used in Catholic churches. The genre of music during this period of

time was both secular and sacred. Music during this time was primarily vocal, instruments

were used to accompany vocal lines or to make an improvement on instrumental dances.

MUSIC DURING RENAISSANCE

Renaissance is when the Europe is having a great cultural and social change, it was

during the 14th century. As the printing press was introduced during the early of renaissance,

the rules of music changed drastically. Renaissance was the beginning of the music from the

greatest mind ever produced. During this period of time, vocal music is more popular

compared to instrumental. The rise of humanistic thoughts during this period of time has

created a close relationship between the music and words. Composers tried to include

words in the music to portray deeper meaning of emotions and greater feelings, thus making

renaissance music more emotional music. Compared to music from medieval age, music

from this age have more sound.

CLASSICAL MUSIC

Classical music begin at the end of time of Baroque music that was after the

renaissance. Classical music have clearer and lighter music texture compared to before.

This classical types of music conveys various kind of moods. Classical music used

unexpected pauses, syncopations, and frequent changes in length of the notes. The tune in

this classical music is easier to remember. Compared to Baroque music, the melodies are

shorter. Orchestra also during this time increased in size and range.

ROMANTIC ERA

Music from romantic era begun after classical era. The music from this era was

artistic and intellectual. It was a fascination with the past, particularly the middle Ages and

legends of medieval chivalry. The music emphasis on extreme subjectivism and shows

interest on autobiographical. Composers during this time have their own individual style and

expression. Usually, composer would write music to follow a story, poem, idea, or scene.

The instruments would represent the emotions, characters, and events of a particular story

and it would also convey sounds and motion of nature. Unlike previous era, composers from

this era begun to become freelancers and Beethoven was the first. As before, composers

wrote music for church and courts, when they become freelance, they wrote music for their

own pleasure.

20th CENTURY

The revolution of music begun on 20th century when people can start to listen to the radio.

new media and technologies were developed to record, capture, reproduce and distribute

music. Music performances became increasingly visual with the broadcast and recording of

music videos and concerts. 20th Century music brought a new freedom and wide

experimentation with new musical styles and forms that challenged the accepted rules of

music of earlier periods. Performing groups during this era include chamber orchestras,

instrumental ensembles, orchestras, choral groups, computer generated instruments and

mixed media. Musical forms from previous musical periods are used, often in experimental

ways.

PUNK ROCK

Punk rock or simply known as punk is a rock music genre that was developed between 1974

and 1976 in the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia. Punk bands typically use

short or fast paced songs, with hard edged melodies and singing styles, stripped down

instrumentation, and often political, anti establishment lyrics. Many punk bands self

produced recordings and distributed them through informal channels. The term punk was

used to describe garage bands and their devotees. Typical punk rock instrumentation

includes one or two electric guitars, an electric bass, and a drum kit, along with vocals.

Songs tend to be shorter than those of other popular genres. The lyrics are typically frank and

confrontational.

CONCLUSION

In Malaysia, their music are influenced from the neighbour country, Thailand and Indonesia.

They are traditional music, and contemporary music. Music in Malaysia does not go through

as much as revolution compared to music from the Europe. Nowadays, the songs composed

are also influenced from the western. Music for rituals are rarely to be found as music

nowadays are mainly for entertainment. Music have evolved so much from the Greek time

until there are many genres exists. Music are not only for rituals, but music are better known

for us to accompany our quit life and make it more soundly and portrays more emotional.
