CHAPTER XANIMAL RALLY

Cruella hung up the phone. Lionel Skiner took out anote book and pen from his pocket and begun to

calculate. He added the fifteen to another numberand wrote down the total: ninety- nine. A terriernamed Kipper lying in the doorway of a nearbycottage pricked up his ears. He stumbled to his feetand barked a response. Jasper drew his leg back andkicked the rusting door of the truck. Fogey, thesheepdog, awoke with a jolt. Barking madly, he

jumped to his feet and charged into the aisle. Fogeygalloped back to the farmyard and barked out amessage, using a discarded piece of a farm buildingas a megaphone. The message passed over the

farms, through the suburbs, and into the great cityof London.

CHAPTER XIPRIME SUSPECT

Cruellas morning newspaper blared the newsaccompanied by a picture of Nanny sitting by theempty puppy basket. She glanced a picture of Rogerand Anita. Then she picked up her phone. Theringing woke Anita and Roger from a sound sleep.

Anita leaned forward anxiously. Anita felt her self softening. Anita covered the phone and shot him anindignant look. Roger grabbed the phone fromAnita. Anita snatched the back from her husband.While Anita and Roger were talking, a Chihuahuatrotted around the corner, sat down in front of theirhouse, and begun to bark.

CHAPTER XIIKIPPER TO THE RESCUE

At the De Vil mansion, Horace and Jasper sat on oldripped chairs in front of a dying fire. Horace stoodup. Quickly Jasper pulled the chairOut from behind him, tossed it into the fire, andthen returned to his own seat. Kipper leaped on to abalcony rail, sailed through a broken window in theDe Vil mansion, and fell through the rotted cloth of a bed canopy. Horace bent over to take off the

shoes. Was there something moving in the shadows.From the other side of the door came the sound of wimpering they were there. Kipper look anxiouslyaround for a way to get to them. The line of puppiescontinued silently toward the entry, all went well

until one of the smallest puppies stumbled and slidinto a table.

CHAPTER XIIIA NARROW ESCAPE

At the De Vil mansion, the animals were busy. Onesquirrel gnawed on a wire in Horace and Jasperstruck, another poked its head out of a heating vent,while third rolled a walnut into the tailpipe. A fewmiles away, Pongo and Perdy slowed to a stop,

uncertain of which to go. Jasper stretched andgroaned. Horace kicked over a table and tore of f one of its legs. Jasper and Horace smiled broadly,then swung the door open. Behind him, Kipper ledthe puppies out of the library once again. As thepuppies made their escape, a woodpecker quietlyflew away into the snowy night. Kipper kept his eyeon the line of puppies hurrying of the stairs. Just afew more. Kipper s heart pounded. If they came innow, all hope was gone. Horace and Jasper roseslowly to their feet and marched up the stairs.

CHAPTER XIVREUNITED

Feeling very pleased with herself, Cruella drovethrough the deep snow of the countryside in herPanther De Vil. Kipper watched Wizzer slide downthe copper pipe to safety. With a sigh of relief, heturned toward the roof door. Kipper dodged as

Jasper swung at him again and again. Suddenly helunged and clamped his teeth on Jaspers hand.

Jasper pushed his coat aside and yanked out hispistol. Terrified Kipper back to the edge of the roof.

Jasper looked down at Kippers limp body andlaughed. As Cruella stepped out of her car, hesaluted her from the roof. Cruella looked up angrily.

Jasper shifted from one foot to the other. Jaspercupped his hands around his mouth. The policemancame out of Cruella De Vils residence. Pongo and

Perdy barked a welcome to the other puppies.Ninety eight Dalmatians rejoiced at their narrowescaped from Cruella De Vil.

CHAPTER XV

ALL IOI

The puppy who had been left behind greeted himwith a happy yip. Then he realized his mistake. Thisman had not come to rescue him. In terror the pupbacked away. Kipper charged again. Skinner fell tothe floor clutching both ankles in agony. With thepuppy in tow, Kipper hobbled to the door. Puppiesstreamed silently out the hole in the side barn asCruella walked through the barn doors. Horace and

Jasper drugged a log over to the electric fence. The

two men stepped onto the log. Police carssurrounded the Panther De Vil. The police officershad found Pongo, Perdy and the puppies. Perdy roseand barked sharply. Kipper was limping at the mainroad. A line of police cars pulled out of the village.Pong o and Perdy and their puppies rode in thebackseat of the car.

CHAPTER XVIONE BIG HAPPY FAMILY

Roger and Anita hurried out. Pongo, Perdy, and thepuppies hopped out the police car and scrambledtoward them. The policemen tipped their hats, gotinto the car and pulled away. A line of police carsextended around the corners. Out of each carscrambled dozens of yipping Dalmatians puppies. Asthe puppies scrambled into the house, Roger pickedup
