from Chapter Chair Valeria Hutchinson

Our 20th anniversary picnic in Salisbury, NC, was a smashing success despite the sweltering heat of the day. We honored our chapter's charter members and welcomed several new members and their spouses. There was plenty of good food and great conversation, not to mention the ride on the steam locomotive circa 1950. The highlight as always was the Corvettes driven to the event, which ranged from midyears to the C7 generation. I thank everyone for their input, attendance and assistance, all of which contributed to the event's success. A good time was had by all.

Our fall judging meet and annual business meeting for the election of 2017 officers is rapidly approaching. The dates are September 9-10 at the historic 1927 Lake Lure Inn. Please call the hotel to make your reservations if you have not already as there are a limited number of rooms available.

Janet and Harold Kennedy will lead a road tour from Greenville, SC; Ed Harbour will lead from the Raleigh area; and Klee and I will do so from the Charlotte area. Please notify one of these leaders if you are interested in joining in the fun. We will all meet in Rutherfordton at The Olive Tree restaurant for lunch. After lunch we will drive on to the inn as a group. Please let one of these leaders know if you plan to join the convoy so we can obtain a number for lunch.

The ladies will be hosting a wine and cheese party in the tabulators’ room Friday evening at the same time as judging school; however, it will extend for an extra 30 minutes after school is out so that all participants can attend.

Charlie Mitchell has graciously planned a road rally through the mountain terrain after judging is completed on Saturday. All participants are encouraged to drive in this tour regardless of the make/model of vehicle driven.

Please be thinking about events for next year's calendar. Ideas and suggestions are welcome. If you would like us to consider an event in your area, please suggest a venue and theme. Event coordinators are needed. The board of directors will begin planning these events at the first BOD meeting following the election (date to be announced). All members are welcome to attend and discuss your ideas.

I am pleased to announce the board of directors’ decision to host a regional meet in 2018 and a national convention in 2019 and their approval by the National Board. The venue for both events will be the TD Convention Center in Greenville, SC. All judging and social events will be held inside the convention center. YEAH!

The city of Greenville is eager to host our events and has been extremely giving and cooperative. These events will require team cooperation and commitment from our entire club.

I hope to see all of you in the beautiful Lake Lure area next month.

Save the Wave!

from Region IV Director John Ballard

The 2016 National Convention in Warwick, Rhode Island is history. The road tour had 110 participants and they had parking areas when they arrived, but the group then heard the usual "no rooms ready" when they tried to register. We had 185 judged cars and 205 awards. Total attendees were 800. The large judging tent was a decent venue for judging— except for paint color. The first night welcome reception was one of the best Judy and I have ever attended; plenty of food was the order of the day. We heard they had increased the food amount by 20% to avoid the usual shortages.

Mike Ingham welcomed everyone at the membership meeting on Monday evening. He reiterated his policy of transparency within the organization with dignity and respect to the membership. Other than the judging and chapter awards, the highlight of the meeting was the Lifetime Achievement Award

presented to Vinnie Peters, a past president and current editor of The Restorer and The Driveline.

During the week, someone stole $500 from the NCRS Foundation booth. President Ingham asked for replacement donations at the awards banquet and members and guests raised $2,115. Judges and other NCRS members also gave the Foundation $2080. NCRS store sales amounted to $3,321 including the two bid vacations, which were a hunting trip and fishing event.

Bob Kinstrey from the Carolinas Chapter presented an outline, proposed budget, and site photos for a national convention in Greenville, S.C., in 2019. Using the cost schedule from the 2015 Denver event, the proposed budget appeared doable. The NCRS Board voted positive on this proposal. We will need coordination and help from other chapters in Region IV for this endeavor.

We again have good news on the recovery of Mike Sams. He is improving and his strength increasing. He can now visit his car workshop and get projects organized. Hopefully he will improve enough to attend the 39th annual Florida Regional

January 11–14, 2017 at the Sun N Fun facilities.

The new NCRS paint flowchart is now available in laminate. These can be ordered by the judging chairman in each chapter from David Brigham. We have given several seminars on this subject as the judging of paint has changed after the 2016 national convention.

Any questions or concerns please email or call 502-905-3942.

Chapter is Well Represented at 2016 National Convention

Members from the South did it once again when we traveled north of the Mason-Dixon Line: The hot humid Southern weather went with us. For the week, Providence, Rhode Island, had temperatures in the upper 80s and low 90s with high humidity. A break came with some cooling breezes Wednesday afternoon.

The chapter was well represented by John* and Judy Ballard, Tom* and Kaye* Bulluck, Page Campbell*, Mark Donnally*, Jimmy Gregg*, Richard* and Tori Guthrie, Gary* and Alice Jaynes, Fred Jenkins*, Bob Kinstrey, Norman Lontz, Brian McIntyre*, Russ Robbins*, Tom Russo*, Pat and Sandy Slosek, Rick Twining*, Rich Vaughan*, Don and Ann** Warmuth, and Reba Whittington*.

*served as a judge ** tabulated

The Warmuths, the Jayneses, Norman Lontz, Jimmy Gregg and Rich Vaughan participated in one of the road tours.

On Monday evening, the following judging advancements were recognized with appropriate shirts and hats.

Brian McIntrye 400 Fred Jenkins 300 Page Campbell 300 Tom Russo 300 Richard Guthrie 300 Mark Donnally 200

In a continuation of something he began in 2014, Dana Forrester presented NCRS veterans pins to members who have served in the military and had not received one in 2014 or 2015. Bob Kinstrey accepted one of those.

Don and Ann Warmuth earned a Sportsman ribbon and Valeria Hutchinson reached the Sapphire Level of giving to the NCRS Foundation.

Over 400 families attended with 110 participating in the road tours. One hundred eighty-five Corvettes entered. Two hundred five cars were entered, and 161 were judged. Twenty 1966s participated in the Year of the 1966.

Membership Report Janet Kennedy Membership Manager

It’s been a really busy summer for the chapter in two ways. Since the last newsletter, I have sent out eleven prospective member packets and welcomed new members, Robert and Barbara VanDewoestine and Rodney and Bobbi Baker.

Additionally, the chapter held its 20th anniversary celebration at the NC Transportation Museum and had an excellent turnout including both these new ones. We had a great time even though it was a little warmer than usual.

Thanks to everyone who came out and spent the afternoon with us. The food was wonderful, thanks to cooks Klee and Harold, but the buzzing around meeting new members and talking to old ones was even better. Charter members were recognized and announcements were made.

Please pay special attention to Bob Kinstrey’s article in this newsletter regarding the 2018 CCNCRS Regional and 2019 National. Looking forward to seeing everyone at Lake Lure.

20th Anniversary Fete Recognizes Charter Members Duane Ravenberg, Event Chair

July 30 was a memorable day for the chapter when twenty-three families gathered to celebrate twenty years of the Carolinas Chapter. The day began at the NC Transportation Museum in Spencer with a museum tour and ride on an historic steam engine. Following that, a caravan of Corvettes drove nine miles to Dan Nicholas Park for a picnic lunch and some reminiscing about the formation of the chapter and its accomplishments during 20 years.

It appeared that everyone had a good time and enjoyed spending time in conversation. Most seemed to feel the same as Bob Young when he stated that we need these types of social activities in addition to those related to judging cars and holding technical presentations.

After the anniversary cake was cut and served, Chapter Chair Valeria Hutchinson made remarks, Reba Whittington reviewed how the chapter was formed and that 24 charter members had remained for all 20 years. Bob Young accounted how he got involved with NCRS and the friendships that he has made since moving to the area.

Valeria Hutchinson and Bob Kinstrey presented framed chairmen’s commendation certificates to the seven charter members who were present. L to R: Dick Lawrence, Louis Kolb, Dick Whittington, Alan Beaver, Harrold Kennedy, Ray Culberson, and Walt Krupowicz.

Bob Kinstrey and Janet Kennedy informed the group that the chapter has been granted a 2018 regional and the 2019 National Convention with both to be held in Greenville, South Carolina.

They emphasized the need for lots of volunteers and that there will be tasks for all talents and abilities.

Thank you all for making the picnic such a success, especially to Janet Kennedy (food and decorations) and Bob Kinstrey (designing & printing certificates and arranging museum tickets).

A major contributing factor to the good time was the food. Thanks go to Klee Wilson who performed as master chef by grilling lots of hamburgers and hotdogs.

Schedule for the Fall Meet at Lake Lure

The Carolinas Chapter always makes the fall weekend of Flight judging and the annual business meeting a busy one filled with lots of activities for all. A couple of road tours have been added this year. The setting is a new one—Lake Lure, N.C., a manmade lake nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The lake is in the Hickory Nut Gorge surrounded by mountains and granite cliffs, one of which is Chimney Rock. The area has been a filming location for numerous movies, including Thunder Road, Dirty Dancing, A Breed Apart, Forrest Gump, The Last of the Mohicans and Firestarter. http://www.romanticasheville.com/lake_lure.htm

Friday Road Tours to Lake Lure

On Friday morning, groups will leave Greenville, South Carolina, Charlotte, and Raleigh to road tour to Lake Lure. The three will meet for lunch in Rutherfordton at the Olive Tree. Contact one of the following for details about where you can join them for the trip.

Greenville: Janet/Harold Kennedy 864.923.4445 [email protected]

Charlotte: Valeria Hutchinson 980.253.4733 [email protected]

Raleigh: Ed Harbour 919.349.5930 [email protected]

JUDGING SCHOOL After checking in at the registration desk and having dinner on your own, members will attend the one-point judging school that Judging Chair Fred Jenkins has arranged. It will be taught by Fred and John Ballard on the new paint judging matrix that is now in effect.

SATURDAY AFTERNOON ROAD TOUR

Following the completion of judging on Saturday afternoon, Charlie Mitchell has planned a 45-mile road tour that will wind through some very scenic areas. Included are sweeping mountain views as well as some twisting roads that Corvettes like. The ride will go through Rutherfordton where there is an optional ice-cream stop. Travel time is one hour (not including ice cream), and fuel is available all along the route.

Combined Tech Session/Judging School Held at Whittingtons’

A dual chapter event was held at the home of Dick and Reba Whittington August 13. A morning tech session finished the installation of carpet in Reba’s 1972.

Anyone who has performed interior work in the rear of 1968-77 coupes can attest to their confined quarters and backbreaking positions. Brian McIntyre and Fred Jenkins absorb that lesson here. Brian and Fred do the work here as Pete and Ray supervise.

Fred learns the intricacies of 1972 seatbelt mounting system. At the end of the day, the carpet was installed. →

After lunch Jimmy Gregg conducted an enlightening mechanical judging school using the 1970-72 judging manual and sample judging sheets. He had Alan Beaver, Pete Mihaltian, and Ray Culbertson locate the build date of the car and then compare that to dates of items in the engine compartment.

Concentration was also paid to the engine pad, its derivatives, stamping and broach marks.

A Medical Update from Mike and Toni Sams

August 17, 2016

The last time I sat down to write about the medical journey we have been on there was a lot to tell. The surgery and immediate recovery process seemed to reveal new details daily. Today, not so much. It has been almost three months since Mike's surgery and we have fallen into a routine that might seem boring and tedious to some. We spent most of the first six months of this year holding our breath and waiting for the next shoe to drop, so yes, we are fine with boredom.

Mike has healed nicely from the surgery. After the feeding tube was removed, everything he ate was liquefied in the NutriBullet. Now he is on a regular but soft diet. He has maintained his weight throughout this entire ordeal. His surgical scars have healed nicely with the exception of the bone graft site on his lower right leg. They removed the tibia from here and used it to reconstruct his jaw. The doctors told us this might be the most difficult one to heal and they were correct. He wore a wound vac for almost five weeks to jump start the healing and it seems to have worked. We are now on regular wound dressings and while it [the incision site] is still fairly large, we can see progress daily.

Communication is still a little challenging. He has an electro larynx with a small tube attached to the top. We are still in the learning curve with this. I can understand about 75% of what he says so pencil and paper are in every room of our house. After speaking with his speech pathologist last week, we were encouraged to learn that he may be able to get a voice prosthesis before too much longer.

Mike continues to amaze me with his will and determination to heal and return to the things he loves to do. He is spending time in the shop working on his 1940 Ford. I can hear the collective gasp as I write this. Yes, he loves this 1940 Ford. He started this project last year and it had been sitting idle for some time. A few weeks ago he decided he was bored silly with TV so he went out to the shop, and almost every day since then, he has stayed longer and longer. This car has been a godsend. It seems to be coming along nicely. If he gets tired he will stop and nap in his recliner.

We still get cards from all our NCRS family almost every day. We read them all and appreciate the words of prayer and encouragement. What a blessing you have been to us. Our prayers and yours have been answered. Our entire family, all 20 of us, thanks you from the bottom of our hearts for your continued love and support. Someday soon we will be able to join you again for a chapter or regional meet. We are hoping that will be sooner rather than later.

Mike & Toni Sams

Minutes of Board Discussions on Regional and Convention

Columbia and Greenville, SC, were final considerations

In April, the Carolinas Chapter was approached by the National Board about hosting a 2018 regional meet and the 2019 national convention. The presentation had to be made to the National Board at the July 22 meeting. Preliminary discussion took place at the May 7 board meeting, where it was decided to explore Bowling Green KY, Chattanooga TN, Greenville and Columbia, SC. Information was gathered, and in the interest of time, the chapter board held two telephone conference calls to discuss these options.

No conclusion was reached at the June 30 call due to a lack of information from the national office. John Ballard secured copies of the 2015 budget and final expenses. A sample budget was then put together by Bob Kinstrey and Janet Kennedy and the board held another conference call on July 9 to make a decision.

The outcome of that was that Bob Kinstrey would present a proposal to the National Board for both a 2018 regional and the 2019 convention to be held in Greenville, SC.

Here are the minutes of the two conference calls.

Minutes for CCNCRS BOD Conference Call

June 30, 2016

Conference call began at 7:00 p.m.

Those on the call were

Valeria Hutchinson Bunky Byrd Fred Jenkins Janet Kennedy Bob Kinstrey Dave Barrett John Ballard Reba Whittington Dick Whittington Duane Ravenberg

A quorum was present.

The purpose of the phone call was to discuss the potential of the Carolinas Chapter hosting the NCRS National Convention in July 2019 and a regional meet in April 2018. A power-point presentation with information about Greenville and Columbia was sent prior to the call.

At the beginning there was a brief explanation why Chattanooga, Bowling Green and Charlotte were not good fits. The first two were eliminated due to distances from the chapter and the third due to difficulties dealing with the speedway.

Next was a lot of discussion about differences between Columbia and Greenville. Both cities have advantages and disadvantages and these were discussed in detail. At the end of the discussion, Greenville was selected as the preferred city due to the lack of trailer staging space at the Columbia convention center and a greater appeal of things to do in Greenville for families not involved with judging.

The group then had a lively discussion about budgets and the availability of manpower to plan and staff the event itself. Statistics regarding attendance and expense budgets for conventions up to 2006 had been sent by the National, but the group felt numbers from that far back were worthless. Without recent budget information, it is impossible to prepare a budget. John Ballard will ask for recent budget information.

A budget needs to be conservative and should be based on about 475 registrations. Chapter leaders are aging but there was a general feeling we could manage the event planning and work with lots of volunteers from the membership.

It was pointed out that if the chapter hosts the national convention, it will be necessary to have a regional the year before as a dry run in that location.

A motion was made to vote on hosting the national convention. More discussion focused on the lack of budget information. It was unanimous that the chapter would not consider a national convention without sufficient information to prepare a budget. If the national gives that information, then the chapter will reconsider, but it must be within the next few days for this to happen.

Following the vote, there was discussion as to whether or not the chapter should host a regional even if it does not host the national convention. Discussion ended without a conclusion being reached.

Conference call ended at 9:00 p.m.

Minutes for CCNCRS BOD Conference Call

July 9, 2016

Conference call began at 7:00 p.m.

Those on the call were

Valeria Hutchinson Fred Jenkins Bob Kinstrey John Ballard Janet Kennedy Dave Barrett

A quorum was present.

The purpose of the phone call was to further discuss the potential of the Carolinas Chapter hosting the NCRS National Convention in July 2019 and a regional meet in April 2018. The officers had received requested budget information on the 2015 convention that helped them refine a proposal. Proposed updated budgets for each event, along with a power point presentation with information about Greenville, were sent to the BOD prior to the call.

There was a long discussion about the regional budget. Adjustments were made to the original proposal and a final proposed budget was based on 180 registrants and 69 cars. Expenses include a donation to the Hendrick Marrow Program and a 2% reserve. Project profit is $2,519. Everyone agreed that the chapter should pursue a regional meet in April 2018 even if the chapter does not host the 2019 national.

Hosting the national convention was then discussed and initially centered on the number of registrants and cars. Numbers in the proposed budget, 450 and 150 respectively, were agreed as being reasonable. John Ballard mentioned that there is some excitement about having a convention in Greenville and the numbers are conservative.

Next was a discussion about budgeted income, expenses and fees. It was noted that there is a proposal to be presented to the National BOD stating that chapters that host the national convention will be given a $3,000 fee even if the convention loses money. The National is responsible for all income and expenses.

Staffing for the convention was then discussed. Staffing is always a major concern, especially with an aging core group. It is believed that the chapter will be able to recruit the number of people required by 2019. A vote was taken among the members, and it was unanimously agreed to host the 2019 National Convention in Greenville, providing the national guaranteed paying the chapter at least $3000.

Bob Kinstrey will present the chapter’s proposals at the National BOD meeting on July 22, 2016, at the end of the convention in Rhode Island.

Conference call was adjourned at 9:24 p.m.

Chasing Water Leaks in a C5

Charlie Mitchell #25848

I recently had a 1996 coupe in for some work and one of the items mentioned was a water leak. Well, this one was just about the worst I’ve seen. A significant amount of water was coming into the passenger footwell from under the dash and through the heater ducts. This car spends most of its time outdoors and had an accumulation of leaf debris in the cowl area. The service manual shows three drains in the upper cowl plenum and how to clear them. In reality I found several more drains across the front cowl area. The plenum has two up high by the center and by the windshield wiper motor. If not draining properly, these will allow water to build up in the plenum. A third is located in the evaporator case behind the right lower fender (Photo 1). All of these were clogged so I thought cleaning them was the fix. But no, the leaks continued. The first area I found was on the firewall where the harness from the engine comes through. If the plenum rubber seal to hood begins to let water get through it will drip directly onto this harness location and go through to the interior. It was necessary to reseal this plenum area as well as re-caulk the harness pass-through. This helped but the leak still persisted.

Seal the area under the plenum rubber seal #7 and be sure the two upper drains are clear. They are inside the plenum area. It is necessary to remove the screens 4, 5, 6 to access these. A rod can be run through these.

Removal of the right lower dash and carpet showed a significant leak coming in from the evaporator case. Looking up to the windshield pillar, I discovered another rubber drain that was clogged. (Photo 2 upper arrow) There is one on each side of the dash at the windshield pillar. This wasn’t the whole problem though. I finally removed the fan and inside the evaporator case found two drilled holes that serve as drains. One is directly below the fan cage and the other is inside the evaporator case (Photo 3 upper arrow) by the valve flap (Photo 3 lower arrow) that regulates airflow from inside or outside. Both of these areas were filled with silt and required cleaning and blowing out.

There is also a hole in the bottom of the evaporator case (Photo 4) just above the fuel filter that will clog. This is separate from the rubber boot on the side. I found that using a rod to push through this helped clear it. So the bottom line is that there are eight drains to be checked. Also, all weather-stripping should be checked for any problems. After replacing the jute backing and cleaning the floor, all is well. I also removed the passenger seat and cleaned and lubed the tracks as a good bit of water had pooled toward the back of the seat in a low area. Materials used were 3M strip caulk and seam sealer.
