Chapter W - Duke City Wings July 2013
Ride to the Tune up cafe in Santa Fe, NM
On Saturday, June 15th, 11 people on seven bikes headed out from the Smith’s parking lot located at Central and Tramway at 3:30pm to Santa Fe for dinner. Brian L. led the way to Santa Fe via US66 to North 14 pass Golden, Madrid and into Santa Fe. Our CD Dave took over as he knew where the Tune up Café was located.
Glad we had reservations as this place is fills up quickly. We were seated and the ordering began. Ordered the El Salvadoran pupuas. It was very good and the price is very reasonable (cheap) for Santa Fe! And if course, dessert!!!! This is GWRRA
event!!! The espresso chocolate brownie sundae made this dinner great!
After dinner, it was time to leave. We headed out to Agua Fria to Airport Rd. The eastsiders headed back to Albuquerque via NM14 and the westsiders went back via I25.Once back to town and heading west on Paseo del Norte, we ran into a HUGE dust storm, and made it home safe. The attendees: Dave and Lisa B., Brian and Michele L. Chris and Annette P. Tom B., Sam S., Steve T., Michelle T. and Richard M.

CHAPTER W DIRECTORS
Dave and Lisa Bachman From the Darkside
“THE HIGHEST POINT OF ACHIEVEMENT YESTERDAY IS THE STARTING POINT OF TODAY”
Motto of Paulist Fathers
Hot enough for you? Boy howdy, it’s been quite the spring, no? If you’ve been paying attention over the last month, you know how busy we’ve been. Starting even before that, from the Region Rally, to rides and dinners, and more rides and events. If you missed it, too bad so sad. There are overnighters coming up soon, and by the time you read this you will either have just returned from one or are hearing tales of the fun and glory had by those who did go. I’m not going to beg you to participate, but know this, the more you put into it, the more you pull out.
So, we’ve got some new people on the staff, and some tried and true members who have given others a chance to step up after years of dedicated service. Ralph French has retired as newsletter editor after 2-1/2 years on the job, this has allowed James “KC” Rivers to step in as your editor. Dan Cok had his plate full and has let two of his positions go to new Staff members. Annette and Chris Perry are now taking over the Goodie Store, and Peggy Pool has stepped into the Prize Coordinator position. I would like to say THANK YOU to the retiring staff and the new staff for their time and participation. Lest I be remiss, I would like to give a GREAT BIG THANK YOU to the rest of the staff for their continued participation and hard work.
I hope each day we all strive to achieve something a little higher. Whether it’s achieving more at work, more as a parent, more as a friend, more as a rider, more as a spouse or partner, or more as a member of GWRRA, if you achieve a little more today and build on it tomorrow, you will be able to achieve great heights. As we all know, anything worth achieving is worth the work involved. Build on what you have and always look forward and upward.
I have a request for all of you. If you like something let someone know. If you don’t like something, let someone know. Don’t see an activity you would like to do, let someone know. See an activity you think is less than appealing, let someone know. By someone, I mean a staff member, if you don’t say something we may continue to make the same decisions over and over. We, the staff, are here for YOU, this is YOUR chapter, we want you to be happy, I mean within reason, we’re not going to hand out hundred dollar bills, although that would make me happy, receiving one not handing them out, even though I am a GIVER.
Be sure to read the newsletter cover to cover, you might find some useful information in here. You might find an activity, educational seminar, dinner, or heaven forbid a RIDE you might like to participate in. Check the Ride Schedule as some of the rides have changed.

The month of June is the month sandwiched between the region convention and Wing Ding. Some memories of the region convention are fresh in our minds, while others are fading with time, and anticipation of those traveling to Wing Ding is paramount in their thoughts. Each month of the year is unique and creates its own memories. June is often filled with many birthdays and anniversaries to celebrate. For us, June is a special month with our anniversary. Other happenings for us in June were: having supper with 10 members of the CO-N GWRRA group along with Ralph Robynn in Old Town, lunch with Chapter R in Madrid (or what was left of the group), introducing a couple to GWRRA while having ice cream at the Old Tyme Ice Cream Shop on South 14, participating in a Motorist Awareness event with Chapter F members at Balloon Fiesta Park, entering Boomer in a Father’s Day Car Show in Edgewood, NM, and riding Boomer to work on National Ride Your Bike to Work day. Once you join GWRRA, there are endless opportunities to interact and get together with fellow members, both near and far. We encourage you to take advantage of those opportunities and let those little bouquets of life fill your days.

Membership Enhancement Coordinator (MEC)
by Barbara Cok
As you have probably read in this newsletter, a lot of emphasis is being placed on the members to participate in the Rider Ed, LTP, MAP, and MEC seminars. The first seminar training day is Saturday, July 20 (see related article). I encourage as many of you as possible to take the time to get this extra training. A little education/training can go a long ways. Some of the LTP will also interrelate with your jobs and possibly provide advancement opportunities for you at work.
If you would like brochures, etc to pass out to potential new members that you meet in your every day life, let me know and I will be happy to get this information to you.
I am encouraging people to read the Newsletter and look for their member number and win $5. So far, the tally is 0-3, with the bank winning on this one. Please read through the Newsletter and see if your member number is there. The wining pot of money is now at $20. Will you be the winner this month? Only reading will tell.
Meet the Member
by Annette & Chris Perry
Hello Chapter W. Chris Perry and I (Annette) would like to introduce ourselves to everyone. We moved to Albuquerque May 2012, bought a Goldwing 1800 Trike in August from Rick Howell (Annette’s brother) and have not looked back. We enjoy riding, meeting new people, and exploring the state of New Mexico. The addition of the Goldwing family to our life has been a priceless experience and will forever be with us. Chris is from Houston TX and I am originally from Ashland OH. I moved to Houston in 2002 where Chris and I meet and we married in 2008. Chris is pretty much a “jack of all trades” currently working at The Accessory Pit. The reason for our move is Annette’s job with Verizon Wireless. We will be running the Chapter W Goodie Store. Thank you Dan and Barb for doing such a great job. Our goal is that all items be available on line for view and possible purchase in the near future. If you are in need of anything from the Goodie Store or would like to see more things available in the store please let us know.

been putting off buying. If you need locking pin backs let me now. The pin backs come in a package of
12 for $6.

GWRRA New Mexico District 2013/2014 Training Plan
June 2013 to May 2014
Region Challenge: All Districts in Region F have been challenged by our Region Director to complete as many Modules of training as possible between now and the 2014 Region Convention. 1 point is awarded for each module completed. These points would be directly awarded to any Chapter trying to go for Chapter of the Year, and COYs/IOY‘s, (so a total of 10 points if all classes are completed).
So your District Leadership has come up with a plan to make the training available to all who wish to attend here in Albuquerque. Upon request, trainers will travel to Chapters outside Albuquerque to teach these classes, the presenters in your local chapters can teach these classes if they are qualified in the different areas of LTP, RE and MEC. The traveling instructors will be able to get your presenters qualified in the areas required.
Training classes: Leadership training has 6 modules and a total of 47 classes, Rider Education has 18 classes not counting ARC/TRC, PLP or CPR/First Aid, Motorist Awareness has 2 as of now, and MEC has at least 7 which is a total of 74 classes.

After the June 16 Chapter W Meeting, Dan and Barbra Cok and Ralph and Robynn French went to the 10th Annual Father’s day Car Show at Wal-Mart in Edgewood, NM. On arriving, Barbara entered us into the competition. We set up out trikes and then took a walk to enjoy the show. Both trikes won a prize at the competition. Dan and Barb’s Boomer won a plaque for “Elite Engine” while Ralph and Robynn’s 1800 trike won a plaque for “Best Precision Machine”. Congratulations to both for representing GWRRA and Chapter W in the community.

Upcoming Stuff You Don’t Want to Miss
by Dave Bachman
On July 20th we will rendezvous with Chapter C at Mario’s Restaurant located at 7501 Paseo del Norte NE, just West of Wyoming Blvd, at 6pm for dinner and fellowship. We would love to see you there.
The 21st of July after our meeting we will ride to Rancho De Las Golindrinas, where they will be having a “Viva Mexico Celebration”, it should be interesting. The cost is $8 per person and $5 for anyone 62 and older. We will have a nice ride up and there should be food available for purchase on site. See you then.
In August on the 18th Chapter W will be having their Birthday Party, Tickets to reserve your space will be $5. These will be available at the meetings and by calling to reserve. We will be having STEAK, CORN ON THE COB, BEANS, AND SALADS, CAKE, GAMES ETC… We have tentatively reserved Oak Flats for the picnic, but with fire restrictions being what they are, we may move it to one of the City Parks. Stay tuned for more info.

As many of you know the District Rally is in Albuquerque this year and Chapter W will be raffling off a nights stay at the MCM Elegante. Tickets will be available at the meeting for $2 for one and $5 for three. I know we live here so why stay? Well the short answer is it helps out the Rally by helping to keep costs down. The more room nights booked the more stuff they are willing to give us. That being said, Chapter W has decided that many of us will be booking Saturday night at the hotel so we can hang out and visit with our friends from around the District with no restrictions for being home at a certain time. Think about it and join us for what is sure to be a knee slapping good time.
WHERE WERE YOU?
by Dave Bachman
Like I’ve said in the past, If you’re not part of the story, you will have to learn of it through the time honored tradition of storytelling. So gather ‘round and let Uncle Festus spin you a tale of great intrigue, suspense and horror.
After our May meeting, 19 brave souls straddled their mighty steeds and headed into parts known. Our travelers, Joe, Peg, Jerry, Richard, Michelle, Rick, Grace, Dave, Monique, John, Judy, Gary, Margie, Dave, Lisa, Joe, Nancy, Harry and Amy, made their way with minimal trial and tribulation to the first nights stop in Blanding UT. They arose the next morning to make their way to every scenic stop, National Park, National Monument, State Park and every other touristy location on the trail. Bonds were formed, and stories were swapped. Spending a week on the road with someone is a sure fired way to get to know all the details of someone whether you want to or not. All in all, with the diverse backgrounds of each of our travelers, friendships were forged in iron, you came to realize these people had your backs. There are too many stories to tell in these pages, (meaning I’m not that good a typist). If you missed out, you missed what one traveler said was the “EPIC RIDE OF THE YEAR”.
On June 8th, our off meeting ride, 5 adventurous souls rode to the LAND OF FIRE AND ICE, Rick P, Larry and Puri V and Dave and Lisa B set out to climb a Volcano and then descend into the frozen reaches of and Ice Cave. After all that adventuring a short ride was taken back into Grants for a spot of vittles at El Cafecito.
Our monthly Social, the 2nd Thursday of the month, took us to Hinkle family Fun Center, alas the weather had other plans for our intrepid group. The outdoor activities were on lockdown, so in true GW form we made an alternate plan. We headed for a DQ and had ice cream. We also rescheduled the event for September. Be on the lookout for that info, There are several rivalries forming in the Go-Cart Race already.
As you can tell June is turning into a busy month. On the 15th, 11 people ventured North to Santa Fe and the TUNE UP CAFÉ where a fabulous dinner was had by Chris, Annette, Tom B, Richard, Michelle, Bry, Michele, Dave, Lisa, Sam S, and Steve T. We found the Café on line as Guy Fieri had showcased it on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives. The cuisine was a mix of El Salvadoran and New Mexican, EXCELLENT. You missed a great feed. The ride home spilt the group into two as some headed down the interstate and some down 14. As we approached Albuquerque we were greeted by horrendous cross winds and blowing sand, Oh the joy of it all. But hey if all the rides were uneventful, we’d have nothing to talk about.
_________________________________________________________________________ New Mexico Gold Wing – Chapter “W” Duke City Wings Page 11 of 12
After the meeting on the 16th several of us braved the heat and travelled yet again North, this time to El Dorado de Santa Fe for the 2nd annual Motorado ef Show. There were some cool old bikes to check out. We watched the Sheriffs ride their bikes in synchronized form. Quite entertaining.
