Ever have one of those moments when you were
on the bike and pulling out of your driveway about to
start a beautiful ride, or even just going down the
street for coffee, and you suddenly remember ―Oh
fiddlefaddle, I forgot my phone, or GPS, or MP3
player‖? You get the idea right?
Now think back to a time before all that, like when
Christopher Columbus sailed, or when the early set-
tlers drove wagon-trains across the continent. How
could they possibly do it? What was Christopher
supposed to do? Call up the Queen and say, ―Hey,
I‘m in the middle of the ocean and I seem to be lost.
Should I take a left here?‖
I know, technology is great, or is it? Imagine you‘re
tooling along with your NAV equipped scooter with
Bluetooth and suddenly all the electronics shut
down. Could you survive? Isn‘t the point of riding
motorcycles to get away from it all? If you want all
the comforts of home, STAY THERE.
I was talking with some people about a cruise they
were going to take and they were concerned if they
would have connectivity. I mean you‘re in the middle
of an ocean, much like Christopher Columbus, on
vacation, and isn‘t the point of a vacation to get away
from it all?
Seems as though everyone has a GPS these days,
so while cruising, are you going to be checking to
see if the Captain is on course? While out on your
bike, how about leaving the GPS off. You know they
aren‘t wrong turns, they are BONUS roads. Stuff you
never would have seen if you didn‘t make that little
side trip.
Sometimes the best way to travel is by following your
front tire. Anyone can get from point A to point B, but
not everyone gets an experience. You ever just turn
off all the distractions and listen to the sound of the
road, or spend some quality time with your thoughts
reflecting on the beauty. Immerse yourself in the ex-
perience, it‘s very freeing.
I know some of you are thinking ‗this guy is a dino-
saur, get with the times‘. Just because it‘s the norm,
doesn‘t make it better. Take some time and remem-
ber why you started riding, and what it was like when
everyone didn‘t have immediate access to you. Is
being that connected really better?
Ride Hard and Leave the Connectivity at Home

Here it is July already, and I still have not won the
lottery! Are you getting enough riding in? If not it
can‘t be because there are not enough rides going
on. Are you going to the District Convention (State
Rally for all of us old timers?) If you are sure you are
not going, well fine, we will miss you. If you even
think you might, get your hotel reservations just in
case, because you can always change your mind in
the end and miss out on all of the good cookin‘ that
our chef Dave is going to be dishing up for all us to
eat.
Now you might be asking why am I not talking about
all of the other fine activities that will be going on at
the convention. Well we are the Gold Wing restau-
rant review association; so why should I talk about
anything else but the food. I know what ya‘ll ride for,
same thing I do, to try out that new restaurant or
check out the dairy queen for some cold refreshment.
Get out, do some riding, go see things and come on
down and visit me at the convention.

As many of you know Chris was the lucky winner of the grand prize at last years NM District Rally. A seven night stay at a very nice resort in Branson MO donated by Keith & Teresa Morrison. Funny thing about his winning ticket being drawn. Chris asked me if I had bought tickets. I replied no, so he bought some tickets at last chance, and the rest is the ad-venture that follows. We decided to take our trip so we could attend MO District Rally. We departed around 4am the morning of May 30th, rode to Clinton OK and spent the night. May 31st we rode to Branson MO, picked up my sister, Peggy at the Branson airport then off to the resort to check in. Our room was in the last building on the Palace View Resort property with a view of the tree covered mountains. It was a one bedroom suite, with fireplace, full kitchen, laundry and balcony for viewing the sunsets - so beautiful and quiet. The resort had activities each day, 3 pools and hot tubs, gas grills, and so much more. We took in several shows; Johan, The Oak Ridge Boys, Dixie Stampede. Peggy and I went to The Price Is Right live with Jerry Springer. We also took a tour of The Shepard of The Hills. Shepard Of the Hills is where Branson got its start so many years ago. It rained every day however the clouds seem to part just in time for us to ride on our daily adven-tures. I bought a new hat from one of the vendors so stay on the look out for it. We participated in the light show and parade. The parade started at the host hotel with over 100 bikes. We rode across town to Branson Landing by the river. Fifteen bikes, trikes, and trailers partici-pated in the Branson Landing light show. My sister rode with me in the parade and when I parked in the designated area to display my lights wouldn‘t you know it, I blew a fuse and none of my lights worked. Chris was at end of the parade. I ran to his trike to ride his trike through the end of the procession and he came to fix my lights.
It was a good thing as I/we won 1st place in both competitions, people‘s choice and Branson Landing judging. After all the fun and excitement at MO District Rally and Branson we packed up and headed south on June 7th., our destination, Mena AR. This is where Chris has fond memories of his boyhood. Spending time with his grandparents, fishing, riding horses, and all the fun things that help make him who he is today. I am so glad we built an extra day into our trip, as the ride to Mena AR was a last min-ute idea. We spent the evening riding to the top of Rich Mountain. At the top are wonderful views, a state park with camping, put-put golf, and of course ICE CREAM. Not just any ice cream, Blue Bell Ice Cream. There is a huge hotel, Queen Wilhelmina Hotel. It is currently being rebuilt from the ground up and will be open Feb. 2015. I hope to return there for a relaxing get-away next year. The rain greeted us again as we rode out of Mena heading back to Clinton OK for the night. The rain however, thank God, was short lived. As we rode out of Mena there were breath taking views and wildlife aplenty. The last leg was from Clinton OK to home, about 475 miles. Over half of the last leg home had 40 mph cross winds. This was hard for Peggy as she had never ridden in high winds. After experiencing a week of rain off and on followed by winds, I will tell you this, I will take riding in rain over wind any day of the week. So glad I have 3 wheels. This was the longest ride I have been on so far. Combined Chris and I rode over 7000 miles last month. I want to say thank you to Keith and Teresa Morrison for the opportunity that afforded us memo-ries to last a life time and Jerry and Becky Stillwagon for dog sitting our dogs.

June 15th besides Father's Day was Chapter W's monthly gathering with our after gathering ride, the Jemez Loop. The participants: Gary & Janet Longhurst, Jerry & Becky Stillwagon, Brian & Michele Leist, Dave Gottheimer & Monique Kourdae, Mike & Vickie Dalby, John & Judy Metts, Chris Perry. Dennis Elliott and Deane Crawforth joined us until Tijeras, Dan & Barb Cok joined us until Madrid and Tony Nelson caught up with us at Valle Caldera. The ride was well planned and led by our Ride Coordinator Gary with Mike running tail. Pojaque was our first stop comfort and gas. The ride continued headed toward Los Ala-mos with Dave now at the back of the pack. We veered off to White Rock to travel through Bandalier.
The ride pace was perfect for such a large group to handle the curves. Considering it's still spring in New Mexico we were blessed with pleasant temperatures and little wind. A stop at Valle Caldera for Brian to look for a geocache, but no luck there. As with all good Gold Wing events a meal was in our future, Los Ojos in Jemez Springs. They set up tables for our group, took orders and delivered food efficiently. Time to head toward home from another good day of living the GW motto ―Friends for Fun, Safety, and Knowledge‖.
Lisa Bachman
After meeting ride to Jemez Springs
On June 12th the normal night, 2nd Thursday of the month, the hungry folks started to arrive and finally we were all there for food and fun with our GW friends. Now your asking so who was there so let me tell you, our so-cial host Tom along with GraceMarie, Becky and Jerry, Gene and Maria, Richard and Christy, Joe and Peg, Harry and Amy, Chris and Annette were joined by An-nette's sister from Ohio, Peggy Eller, Monique and Dave and Lisa. What a crowd! Order were placed while sto-ries were being shared. Being good Goldwingers, we have all had this experience, the food arrives and the so-cializing ceases all becomes quiet. Meals were eaten
with comments of ―good food‖ around. We noticed, as the time arrived for us all to depart for home, besides our group the restaurant had few patrons. Another success-ful social gathering and restaurant visit. Come out and join Chapter W at our next social, Thursday, July 10 Mario's on Paseo.

With our world famous, top notch Ride Coordinator
off to Wing-Ding, I was tasked with leading the
group to Sipapu. Fortunately for me Gary had done
all the hard work and mapped out the route, the
starting time and the stops. He must be pretty good
at this because all I had to do was follow his direc-
tions, and guess what, we didn‘t make any u-turns.
The group met at Smith‘s it quickly became evident
that this was a Westside ride. We had Greg and
Marcia P., Tony and Deb S., Ken B., Chris P, Duane
and Christine M., and Lisa and Dave B. We left and
travelled on Rt. 66 to Moriarty and then North to I-25
in El Dorado, a quick jaunt on the Interstate and
then off into Las Vegas for a lovely ride through the
mountains.
We arrived and had a bite to eat and shopped for
windows in the gift store. The trip home was pleas-
ant albeit a tad warm. We took a little side road
through Cundiyo bypassing Chimayo. The road was
narrow, very narrow, barely wide enough for a car in
some spots and twisty as we climbed up through the
town. It‘s a neat little detour.
Now hold onto your seat, this will be a big surprise
for all. As we entered Pojoaque we stopped for, wait
here it comes, ICE CREAM. I know, it‘s hard to be-
lieve, but it is true. After our cool refreshing snack
we headed back towards home on the freeway.
All in all, it was a wonderful day of riding with some
wonderful people. Too bad you missed it.

Monthly Social—-Mario‘s Restaurant July 10
This month‘s social was at Mario‘s Restaurant on
Wyoming and Paseo del Norte at 6:30pm. As the
group trickled in to the place, greeting old friends
and seeing some new faces. Once the beverages
arrived and meals ordered, the camaraderie be-
gan as Dave handed out tickets to all. Once that
food arrives, it got real quiet! And Mario‘s has al-
ways be consistently good. A few also had des-
sert, but most were full. The chapter paid for
someone meal, and I happen to be holding the
ticket...cool!!
Those that had a wonderful time were: Joe and
Nancy O., Gene and Maria A., Mike and Vicky D.,
Gary S., Diane B. and Lee H., Tom B., Dave and
Lisa B. Chris and Annette P., and Christy P. and

The July Pagosa Springs overnighter provided two
days of travel and fun. What a fun time! In just 48
hours, 14 people on ten bikes experienced 440
miles' of scenic highways, beautiful scenery, a little
road construction, and a few rain drops. We ate at
Kip‘s Baja Grille, Riff Raff, and the Rose restaurant,
enjoyed the healing powers and sulfur smell of the
hot springs with friends, walked down main street
listening to the outdoor music from local bands and
sampled a few cold beverages. As an added bonus,
we were the first to see Janet's and Gary's new/used
2007 GL-1800 trike (guess Gary will work a while
longer), In less then 24 hours we witnessed the
sale/ no sale of Danny and Crystal's bike by an un-
known broker. Thanks go to out to Dave for his lead-
ership and Gary for planning the ride. If you went,
you had fun....if you missed it, don't the next
one! Lots of laughs and lots of fun! The riders: Dave

GWRRA
What is it ?
The aim of the competition is to replicate pictures of yourself and / or your bike at locations around the
Albuquerque, New Mexico area featured in the hit TV series Breaking Bad. If anyone has not seen it
and is wondering what all the fuss was about there is a 30 minute 5 season recap on YouTube here.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aliOLSP643c
Only pictures that clearly resemble the original picture from the Google link will be considered. Each pic-
ture posted will have a letter of the alphabet assigned to it when released. The more pictures you collect
the better chance you will have to win. In the event of a tie the letters associated with the pictures will be
used as a tiebreaker in a word competition.
To enable everyone to participate there are 2 categories, Pictures cannot be mixed between categories
Category 1: Participants photographed with motorcycles
Category 2: Participants photographed without motorcycles
There will be 1 winner from each category; the winners will be those that accumulate the most pictures.
In the event of a tie the second part of the competition involves making words from the letters associ-
ated with the pictures you collected earlier. Pictures and their associated letters may only be used once
per word.
Each word will score 1 point
If the word is motorcycling related it will score 2 points.
The winner will be the person that accumulates the most points. In the event of a tie, the winner will be
the person with the most motorcycle related words.

The year is half over, but the riding season is still on! Don‘t let that
bike sit the garage. It‘s saying...take me for a ride, down the block,
around the corner, across town, out of town, out of state, to the coast-
two days. If you did not go Pagosa Springs, you missed a great time!
And no u-turn!!
Please note the events that are upcoming on page 2 and also in the 3
month calendar in the newsletter. Also, take a look at page 13 and
read the caption box. The first person with the correct answer will re-
ceive something...what??? I don‘t know yet...it will be a surprise!!!
I would like to thank the following members for contributing to the
newsletter: Dave B., Lisa B., Harry J., Tom B., Annette P. A special
thank you to Christy P and Mike D for sending a few sentences about
the trip to Pagosa Springs. Also to Duane Morrison for the pictures
from the Sipapu ride.
Do not forget to purchase your Chapter birthday tickets for August
17th. Also NO Meeting on the 17th as the birthday party will be held in
the mountains.
