Status of Industries in Thane District

5.1 Introduction:

In previous chapter have studied the general and agricultural land use of Thane

district. Concept of land use, classification of land use, Tahsil wise general land use in

Thane district, Tahsil wise per capita net sown area, land use efficiency in study region. In

this chapter we will study the status of industries in Thane district. General distribution of

industries, types of industries and their spatial distribution, location pattern of industries.

Large, medium and small scale industries in the study region performance of major

industries in Thane district.

The industries of Thane district are divided in to four groups on the basis of

economy, size and location and their spatial distribution is studied by taking Thane district.

In the fourth part location pattern of the manufacturing industries of the study region are

analyzed by grouping them into major groups and taking Taluka as a unit. The distribution

and location of manufacturing industries are certainly governed to a significant degree by

environmental factors including physical as well as human factors of cultural environment1.

Natural environment factors are usually of greater importance in the choice of an industrial

site while the cultural environment is of greater importance in the distribution of

manufacturing industries as human factors plays a very dominant in the distribution of

industries in any region. It is also important to note here that once industries are established

in a particular locality they tend to be come stable2 and create external economics which

attract more industries to the same locality. This means that the choice of site for an

industry is an important decision of course industry attracts industry. This is well known

and frequently attested formula Thane is the best example of such formula.

Thane is third most industrialized district in the state. There are 1548 large and

medium scale and 18480 small scale industries in the district. The main products of these

industries are drugs, Textiles, plastics, Rubber, steal pharmaceuticals, engineering,

fertilizers, electronics, and chemicals. The Thane-Belapur- Kalyan industrial belt is the

centre of highly sophisticated modern industries. In Ambernath, Bhiwandi, Belapur,

Tarapur and Murbad these are nearly 4000 industries which contributes towards the

industrialization of the district manufacture of machinery, machine tools and parts except

electrical machinery together with the iron and steel industry and metal products are the

most important and the biggest group of industries in the district and includes manufacture

of prime movers, Boilers, Refrigerators, machine tools, computing and accounting

machinery. Industries machinery for food and textile industries, machinery for chemicals

and paper industries. These industries are mainly concentrated in the Trans- Thane creek

and Belapur road industrial area. The medium and large industries manufacturing

chemicals and chemical products are Pfizer, Lubrizol India Ltd. Polyolefin’s industries Ltd.

NOCIL, Herdillia chemicals, BASF India Ltd. Phoenix chemical woks. The chemical

industries are also found in other parts of the district like wagle industrial estate. Pokharan

road, Ambernath and Dombivali. The cotton and non-cotton power looms are mainly

located at Bhiwandi, Thane and Kalyan. Traditionally Bhiwandi is famous for its handloom

but the deteriorating markets for the handlooms compelled the weavers to replace their

handlooms by power looms. Fisheries constitute an important industry in Thane district. It

is carried out in sea as well as in creeks and estuaries on the western coast. Marine fishery

predominates over inland fishery in the district and provides employment to about 75% of

the persons engaged in the fishing industry. Fishing in sea is carried out along the coast

stretching over about 110 Km. Coca- cola and sugar confectionary salt, ice preparation and

preservation of meat, dairy product preserving and processing of fish are developed in the

district. The Tarapur Atomic energy power station which has ushered an era of utilization

of nuclear energy for electricity generation is also situated in the district.

5.2 General Distribution of Industries in Thane District-

In 2011- 12 Thane district have 20,028 industries and total workers was 3, 17,744

and total investment was Rs. 3330 carore in all industries in Thane district3.

The maximum workers are engaged in manufacturing industries. Thus the entire

industrial land scale of the region is mainly dominated by the manufacturing industries

general distribution to the present manufacturing industries of the region is not uniform. It

gives a very complex controversial picture. Because most of the manufacturing industries

of Thane are concentrated in Thane, Kalyan, Dombivali, Ulhasnagar, Bhiwandi tahsil. This

uneven distribution of manufacturing industries of Thane is due to the geo-economic

factors which vary from Tahsil to Tahsil. Further this factor will be discussed in detail

while emphasizing the spatial distribution and location of industries.

Taluka wise distribution if micro, small, medium and large scale industries are

shown in Table No.5.1.

The spatial distribution of industries is highly uneven. This spatial variation in

distribution of industries is due to several factors in which a mention may be made of

uneven distribution or required raw materials, government policy, Infrastructural facilities,

enterprises that are concentrated in main towns of the Thane district.

Table No.5.1 reveals that in Thane district there was 8878 micro scale industries 9602

small industries 745 medium scale industries and 803 large scale industries was registered

in 2011- 12 out of them the highest number of micro scale industry was recorded in Thane

Tahsil 3327 followed by Vasai Tahsil 1642 and the lowest no of industries was noticed in

Jawhar 12 industries. The small scale industry in Thane district was 9602 in 2011- 12 out

of them 3379 small industry was found in Thane Tahsil, Vasai (1497) is second number in

small scale industry and the lowest number of small scale industries was noticed in Jawhar

11 industries.

There are 745 medium scale industries in Thane district out of them 2999

medium scale industries was found in only Thane Tahsil, followed by Bhiwandi 98 and the

lowest medium scale industries was found in Talasari, Vikramgad, Ulhasnagar there is 03

medium scale industry show. There are 803 Large scale industry in Thane district out of

them 319 major industry was recorded in Thane Tahsil, followed by Bhiwandi (157) Tahsil

and lowest Tahsil is Vikramgad where is no large industry. It means that the Thane Tahsil

is highest in all industries.

Talukawise distribution of industries and persons employed in manufacturing

industries during 2011-12 are shown in Table No.5.2 That the spatial distribution of

manufacturing industries and manufacturing employment in the region is highly uneven.

This spatial variation in distribution of industries is due to several factors in which a

mention may be made of uneven distribution or required raw materials, government policy

influence of Thane district. The total in the region was 3, 17,744 during the year 2011- 12.

The highest employment was recorded in large scale industries was found in Thane Tahsil

are 20678 followed by Bhiwandi 4238, Vada 3449 persons. Whereas medium scale

industries total employment was 14933 in Thane district the highest employment was

recorded in Thane 7234 whereas the Mokhada, Dahanu, Jawhar, Talasari Tahsil have no

employment in medium scale industries.Small and micro scale industries have a large

number of employments in Thane district.

Small scale industries total employment was 183699 out of them the highest employment

was recorded in Thane tahsil 66307 and the lowest employment was found in Mokhada

tahsil 44. Whereas micro scale industries total employment was 83807 out of them the

highest employment was recorded in Thane tahsil 34326 and the lowest employment was

found in Mokhada Tahsil (40) during the period of investigation.

During the period 2011-12 there are vast investment in industries of Thane district.

The total investment of micro industries was Rs. 7594605271 out of them the highest

investment was recorded in Thane tahsil Rs. 2475024087 or 32.59% and the lowest

investment in this category was in Mokhada Tahsil Rs. 2350000 or 0.03% whereas the

small scale industries total investment was Rs. 58471232706 out of them the highest

investment was recorded in Thane tahsil Rs. 20467420963 or 35% and the lowest

investment was found in Mokhada Tahsil Rs. 8086000 or 0.01% during 2011-12.

. Whereas medium scale industries total investment was Rs. 19328634771 in Thane

district. The highest investment in this category was found Murbad Tahsil Rs. 8199100000

means 42.42% total of the district. It means that Murbad Tahsil was highest in this

category.

Whereas the lowest investment was recorded in Mokhada, Dahanu, Jawhar and

Talasari there is no single medium industry and large scale industries total investment was

Rs. 5575.81 Lakhs. The highest investment in this category was noticed in Thane Tahsil

Rs. 2248.8 Lakhs. It means total district percentage is 40.33% and the lowest investment in

this category was 0.00% in Dahanu, Jawhar, Talasari and Vikramgad Tahsil during the

period 2011-12.

5.3 Types of Industries and Their Spatial Distribution:

There are different types of industries. In general there are four clearly

distinguishable types of industries based on their economy, size and location4 they are as

follow-

1) Large scale industry.

2) Medium scale industry.

3) Small scale industry.

4) Handicraft industry. (Micro scale)

1) Large scale industry – Those industries which have investment above of Rs.

50 Lakhs they called large scale industry.

2) Medium scale industry–Those industries which have investment of Rs. 10

Lakhs to Rs. 50 Lakhs they called medium scale industry.

3) Small scale industry–Those industries which have investment of up to Rs. 10

Lakhs they called small scale industry.

4) Micro scale industry – Is local industry.

Distributions of above industries are uneven in the study region. There is 8878

micro industries, 9602 small scale industries, 745 medium scale industries and 803 large

scale industries distributed in uneven. Thane Tahsil is the highest number of industries

shown.

5.4 Location Pattern of Industries:

We have seen that at present there are various types of industries in Thane

district in which each has different types of distribution and location pattern. But here for

qualifies of spatial distribution and location pattern all two manufacturing industries

(particularly factory industry) as well as SSI units of Thane region have been classified into

nine major groups based on combining original standard industrial classification, common

natural resources consumed by manufacturing industries and final products of

manufacturing industries5. These nine major groups of manufacturing industries are agro-

based textile, paper products, printing, nonmetallic and mineral products, chemical,

engineering and miscellaneous. Now we shall discuss location pattern of industries by

taking each major group of industry.

5.5 Talukawise Distribution of Agro-Based Industries:

This major group includes wide range of industries those are concerned with

Manufacturing of food products, beverages, tobacco product. Largest numbers of agro

based industries are in Thane Tahsil there are 47 micro agro-based industries, 89 small

scale agro- based industries and 4 each medium and large scale industries during the period

of investigation. The lowest agro-based industries are found in Jawhar and Vikramgad

Tahsil there are only one micro agro-based industry, there is no single other agro-based

industries. There are total 08 large scale agro-based industries in the study region out of

them 04 industries situated in Thane Tahsil, 02 industries Palghar Tahsil and one each

industries situated in Mokhada and Bhiwandi Tahsil. There are total 145 micro agro-based

industries, 171 small scale industries and 08 medium scale industries are distributed in 15

Tahsil of Thane district during the period 2011-12.

5.6 Talukawise Distribution of Food Industries:

There are 134 micro units of food industries in Thane district cut of total 56 micro

units are found in Thane Tahsil followed by Kalyan 17, Ulhasnagar also 17 and Bhiwandi

15 industries. There is no single micro units of food industries were found in Mokhada,

Jawhar and Shahapur Tahsil. whereas there is 156 small scale food industries in Thane

district out of them 56 means (35.90%) only at Thane Tahsil followed by Ulhasnagar 25

(16.03%) and the lowest food industries are found in Mokhada, Dahanu, Jawhar, Shahapur

and Vikramgad Tahsil there is no single small scale food industry. the medium scale food

industries are only one in the study region these are situated in Murbad Tahsil and there are

two large scale food industries and these are situated in Thane Tahsil.

5.7 Talukawise Distribution of Textile Industries:

In the study region there are 394 micro textile industry, 911 small cotton

industry, 22 medium cotton industries and 150 large cotton industries shows in Table No.

5.6 the highest percentage of micro cotton industries was recorded in Bhiwandi Tahsil

55.33% and the lowest percentage of this category was found (0.00%) in Mokhada, Jawhar,

Shahapur, Talasari and Vikramgad Tahsil. Whereas there are 911 small scale textile

industries in Thane district out of them 486 textile industry was in Bhiwandi Tahsil

(53.35%) and the lowest small textile industry was recorded (0.00%) in Mokhada, Dahanu,

Jawhar, Shahapur Tahsil. whereas there are 22 medium textile industries in Thane district

out of them 08 industry situated in Bhiwandi Tahsil and there are 150 large textile industry

out of them 71 large textile industry shown in Bhiwandi Tahsil. it means that Bhiwandi

Tahsil is leading Tahsil in textile industry of the study region and Mokhada, Dahanu,

Jawhar, Shahapur, Talasari, Vikramgad these Tahsil are not important in textiles industry.

5.8 Talukawise Distribution of Metal-Based Industries:

There are 457 total metal-based industries in the study region. Out of them 174

metal industries are shown in micro level the highest percentage of metal-based industries

was recorded in Vasai Tahsil (27.59%) followed by Thane Tahsil (24.71%) whereas the

lowest percentage of micro level metal-based industries was found in Mokhada, Vikramgad

Tahsil there is no single this industry. Whereas there is 279 small metal-based industry

recorded out of them 87 industry (31.18%) only shown in Palghar Tahsil followed by Vasai

60 industry (21.51%) was recorded and the lowest industry of this category was noticed in

Mokhada, Jawhar, Ulhasnagar and Vikramgad there is no single metal-based small scale

industry. Medium and large metal-based industries are very less in this region there are

only three medium metal-based industries. These are in Palghar, Thane and Vasai Tahsil

and only one large scale metal-based industries are shown in this region.

5.9 Talukawise Distribution of Steel Industries:

There are 483 steel industries in Thane district out of them 220 is micro steel

industry in the region and the highest number of this industry was recorded in Thane Tahsil

69 (31.36%) and the lowest no. of this category was Mokhada, Jawhar, Shahapur, Talasari,

and Vikramgad Tahsil there is no single industry of this category. whereas the small scale

steel industry was 239 in the study region out of them 63 industry was located in Thane

Tahsil. Followed by Vasai 43 industry and the lowest no. of this category was found

Mokhada, Jawhar, Palghar, Shahapur, Talasari and Vikramgad Tahsil there is no single

industry of this category. Whereas the there is 08 medium and 16 large scale steel

industries are situated. Out of them medium steel industries 75% In Vada Tahsil,

Ambernath 12.50% and Palghar 12.50% situated and the large scale steel industry was

found in Vada 56.25%, Thane 25% large scale steel industry shows.

5.10 Talukawise Distribution of Engineering Industries:

The total engineering industries of Thane district was 4439 out of them 2093

industries are micro industries. The highest percentage of these industries was recorded in

Thane Tahsil 48.49%, followed by Vasai 25.85% whereas the lowest percentage of this

category was found in Jawhar Tahsil 0.00% there is no single industry of this category.

There are 2307 small scale engineering industry in the study region out of them 1199

industries was located in Thane Tahsil, followed by Vasai 477. Whereas the lowest

engineering industries of this categories was recorded in Mokhada tahsil there is no single

unit of this industry shown. There are 28 medium engineering industries and 11 large scale

engineering industries shown in Table No.5.9 out of them 12 medium industries were

located in Thane Tahsil. Thane, Vasai, Vada equally have 03 major engineering industries.

5.11 Talukawise Distribution of Mineral-Based Industries:

The total number of mineral-based industries in the study region was 237 out of

them 99 is micro mineral-based industries. Out of them 23.23% situated in Kalyan Tahsil,

followed by Vasai 22.22% and the lowest percentage of this industry was recorded in

Mokhada, Jawhar Tahsil There is no single mineral-based industry was found. Whereas

there is 133 small mineral-based industries are registered out of them 33 industries was

located in Vada Tahsil followed by Thane 29 , Vasai 24 and the lowest industries of this

category was noticed in Mokhada, Dahanu, Jawhar and Vikramgad Tahsil there is no single

small mineral-based industries are shown. There are only three medium scale metal-based

based industries are located equally 01 in Bhiwandi, Vasai and Vada Tahsil and large scale

metal-based industries were found in Thane Tahsil only. There is no single metal-based

industry in other Tahsil except Thane.

5.12 Talukawise Distribution of Automobile Industries:

Table No.5.11 reveres that the Talukawise distribution of automobile industries in

micro, small, medium and large scale. There are total automobile industries was 195 in

Thane district. Out of them 95 automobile industries are in micro level there distribution is

uneven. In Vasai Tahsil 33 micro automobile industries it means the share of Vasai Tahsil

was 34.74% followed by Thane 32 (33.68%). Vasai and Thane Tahsil have two third shares

in micro automobile industries during the period 2011-12. There are small automobile

industries was 92 in the study region, out of them 42 (45.65%) only in Thane Tahsil

followed by Vasai 28 (30.43%). There is no single automobile industries are shown in

Ambernath, Mokhada, Jawhar, Murbad, Shahapur, Ulhasnagar and Vikramgad Tahsil

during the period under study. There is no medium scale automobile industry in Thane

district but there are 08 large scale automobile industries were found. These are 04 in

Thane 02 in Vada and Palghar and Vasai one each during the period 2011-12.

5.13 Talukawise Distribution of Chemical Industries:

There are 1017 total chemical industries located in Thane district out of them 479

chemical industries were micro level. Tahsilwise distribution of chemical industries was

uneven. About 110 mean (22.96%) chemical industries shown in Thane tahsil followed by

82 (17.12) in Palghar tahsil and 75 (15.66%) in Ambernath tahsil shown. There is no single

chemical industries was found in Mokhada, Dahanu, Jawhar and Vikramgad tahsil during

the period 2011-12. Whereas there are total 508 small scale chemical industries shown in

Table no. 5.12 out of them 147 in Palghar tahsil, 134 in Thane tahsil it means that these two

tahsil have near about above 50% share of chemical industry. There is no single chemical

industries was found in Mokhada, Dahanu, Jawhar tahsil. There are total 12 medium and 18

large industries were distributed in the study region. The highest number of chemical

industries in medium scale was found in Ambernath 05 (41.67%) followed by Palghar 04

(33.33%) and large scale chemical industry was found in Thane 10 (55.56%) followed by

Ambernath 3 (16.67%).

5.14 Talukawise Distribution of Paper-Based Industries:

There total 246 paper-based industries in Thane district out of them 124 industries

are micro level and 116 are small scale paper industries. The distribution of paper

industries also uneven. Micro paper industry situated in Thane, Vasai, Bhiwandi, Palghar

Tahsil during the period of under study. The small scale paper industry also highest in

Thane 34, Vasai 26, Palghar 16 and Bhiwandi 11 units. There are 03 medium scale paper

industries and 03 large scale paper industries found in Thane district. These are Thane

Mokhada and Ambernath tahsil shown large and medium scale industries in Table No.5.13

during the period 2011-12.

5.15 Talukawise Distribution of Petro-Chemical Industries:

There are total 152 petro-chemical industries shown in Thane district. Out of them

90 petro- chemical industry was found in micro level these are 24 in Thane tahsil, 18 in

Bhiwandi, 15 in Vasai and 10 in Ulhasnagar Tahsil during the period under study. Whereas

there is 59 small scale petro- chemical industries are shown in Table No 5.14 out of them

the highest number of this category was fund in Palghar 16 (27.12%) followed by thane 10

(16.95%) , Vasai 10 (16.95%) and the lowest number was recorded in Mokhada, Jawhar,

Talasari, Ulhasnagar, and Vikramgad Tahsil, there is no single petro-chemical industry.

Whereas there is no single medium scale petro-chemical industries in Thane district. .

There is only three large scale petro-chemical industries was found in Thane district out of

them one each is Murbad, Thane and Vada.

5.16 Talukawise Distribution of Electronics Industries:

There is wide scope of electronics industries in Thane district. In Thane district

total electronic industries was 1182 out of them 688 electronic industries was micro level

and 476 industries were small scale electronics industries. The highest number of micro

level electronic industries was found in Thane 237 (34.45%) followed by Vasai 168

(24.42%) Kalyan 70 (10.17%) during the period of investigation. There are total 476 small

scale electronics industries shown in Thane district out of them the highest percentage was

recorded in Thane Tahsil 39.08% followed by Vasai 18.28%, Palghar 12.18%. Whereas the

lowest percentage of this category was noticed in Jawhar, Vikramgad Tahsil there is no

single electronics small scale industry. Medium and large scale industries were 10 and 08

respectively in Thane district out of them Thane was three, Vasai and Vada was two each

medium scale electronics industries shown and 05 large scale electronics industries were

found in Thane tahsil and Bhiwandi, Palghar and Vasai tahsil one each industry recorded in

this category during the period of under study.

5.17 Talukawise Distribution of Pharmaceutical Industries:

There are 305 total pharmaceutical industries in Thane district during the period

2011-12 out of them 94 pharmaceutical industries was found in micro level. The highest

percentage of pharmaceutical industries was found in Thane Tahsil 43.62% in micro level

followed by Palghar and Vasai 11.70% each, Kalyan 10.64%. Whereas the lowest

percentage in pharmaceutical industries was recorded in Mokhada, Dahanu, Jawhar,

Shahapur, Talasari and Vikramgad Tahsil there is no single pharmaceutical industries in

micro level. Whereas there is 192 total pharmaceutical industries in small scale was

recorded out of them 56 means 29.17% was found in Palghar tahsil, 52 (27.08%) in Thane

tahsil, Ambernath 29 (15.10%), Vasai 27 (14.06%) was recorded during the period of under

study. The lowest percentage of pharmaceutical industries in small scale was found in

Dahanu, Jawhar, Talasari and UlhasnagarTahsil there is no single pharmaceutical industry

found in 2011-12. There are 19 medium and major scale pharmaceutical industries. The

highest percentage of medium category was recorded in Ambernath 42.86%, Palghar

35.71% followed by Thane 21.43% and large scale industry was recorded in Ambernath

80% and Thane 20% during the period 2011-12.

5.18 Talukawise Distribution of Printing Industries:

Table No 5.17 reveals that there was a total 465 printing industries in Thane district. Out of

them 146 industries in micro level 296 industries in small scale industries 15 medium and

08 are large scale printing industries are there. The highest percentage of micro printing

industries was recorded in Thane 40.41% followed Vasai 26.71%. The lowest micro

printing industries was found in Mokhada, Jawhar, Murbad, Talasari and Vikramgad Tahsil

have no single printing industry shown in this category. Whereas in small scale printing

industries was 296 in Thane district out of them 122 printing industries was recorded in

Thane tahsil followed by Vasai 81 and Bhiwandi 29. Whereas the lowest printing industry

in this category was recorded in Mokhada, Dahanu, Jawhar, Talasari and Vikramgad Tahsil

during the period 2011-12. Thane tahsil is important in medium and large scale there are

80% medium and 50% large scale printing industry shows in Thane tahsil during the period

of under study.

5.19 Talukawise Distribution of Rubber Industries:

There is total rubber industries was 253 in Thane district. Out of them 135

rubber industries in micro level, 114 rubber industry in small scale and only 04 medium

and large rubber industries in this region. The highest percentage of rubber industries in

micro level was recorded in Dahanu tahsil 39 followed by Thane 35, Vasai 30. Whereas the

lowest industry of this category was noticed in Mokhada, Jawhar, Ulhasnagar, Vikramgad

Tahsil. Whereas there are 114 small scale industries in the study region. The highest

percentage of this category was noticed in Vasai 29.82% followed by Thane 27.19%, Vada

11.40% during the period of investigation. There is some Tahsil they have no single rubber

industries these are Mokhada, Dahanu, Jawhar and Vikramgad Tahsil. Medium and large

rubber industries were very less in this district.

5.20 Talukawise Distribution of Readymade Industries:

Table No 5.19 reveals that there were total 388 readymade industries in Thane district. Out

of them 115 industries are in micro level, 264 are in small scale readymade industries and

09 were medium scale readymade industries. Whereas the highest percentage of micro

industries was found in Thane tahsil 26.96% followed by Bhiwandi 26.09%, Ulhasnagar

19.13% and the lowest percentage of readymade industries was recorded in Mokhada,

Jawhar, Shahapur, Talasari, Vikramgad and Vada Tahsil there is no single readymade

industry observed during the period of investigation. Whereas there are total 264 small

scales industry shown in Table No. 5.19 out of them 167 readymade industries was

recorded in Bhiwandi Tahsil followed by Thane 33 and Vasai 18 units. During the period

of investigation there are 09 medium scale industries in Thane district out of them 05 in

Palghar Tahsil and Kalyan, Murbad, Thane and Vasai Tahsil each one readymade industry

was observed during 2011-12.
