Mountain Topics Algonquin Chapter ADK September–October 2019
The Adirondacks Mountains have sure been in the news lately. First it was a pair of men from NYC, and grad-uates of Cortland, who set a record for hiking all 46
peaks over 4,000 feet, unsupported, in under 7 days. Then it was a young girl from Queensbury who set a record as the youngest ever to climb all 46 peaks; before she turned 5! In
our own Algonquin Chapter we are proud to have a young lady [under 10] who at last count had more than 20 peaks to her credit.
Greta is coming to town; New York City that is. Greta Thunberg is the young climate activist who captured the world’s attention with her passion and inter-est in getting governments to take action against climate change. It started in September 2018 with her going on “climate strike” in front of the Swedish Par-liament at the age of 15. Since then she has sparked and inspired a movement with hundreds of thousands of students from around the world marching to get the attention of people and governments that they must address the “climate crises.” Greta will speak to the United Nations next month during the climate talks scheduled for September 23 – 27, 2019.
To coincide with those activities in NYC, it turns out that the “Green Team” from Plattsburgh High School is sparking a similar march and climate awareness campaign here. The local students will participate in having activities here in support of that effort. Details will be published soon.
And finally, on a more somber note, we note the passing of a 50+ year member of the club, Lorri Wetzel. Her sons, Randy and Scott, recently hosted a local event in her memory. She will be missed and was a real spark plug in leading and par-ticipating in many, many chapter events.
