President’s Comments

Our December dinner meeting and Military Ball was great. The cold & flu bug kept several members at home. The musical group ‘The Strand’, played wonderful Irish and Christmas music before and during dinner. I was honored to present Arlan Allen with the MOAA Leadership Award and lapel pin.

After dinner, Brad Lewis inducted 12 of the 2015 Officers and Board of

Directors. Greg Moore, Jim Austin, George Meegan and Tom Ralph will be

inducted at our January 13th Board of Directors meeting. Don’t forget, all SMC members may

attend this meeting at the Friendship Village. I would like to thank Joyce Herd for conducting

our raffle drawing. I heard several good comments about the steak and chicken. My salmon

was very good too.

My first year as president of SMC has come to an end and I survived all in one piece. I want

to thank all of our members and their spouses or significant others for helping me in this effort.

We had many great accomplishments. In no particular order, they were:

• Our 5-STAR and L.O.E. award (4 consecutive annual awards)

• Sponsored the annual National Guard Conference for MOAA

• MOAA-DBACKS ballgame that was highlighted by MOAA National

• Our first MOAA Superstition Mountain Chapter Color Guard performed at that

ballgame

• Karl Pfitzer received his AZ Hall of Fame award

• SMC presented MOAA awards to the three ROTC groups at ASU and 20 JROTC

programs at High Schools in our area

• More than 135 packages from home for our military service members overseas

• books to our hospitals

• Ann Ferguson’s Auxiliary Liaison Award

• Bob Delker’s Lifetime Achievement Award

The opportunity to enjoy the comradery with my fellow military friends and family will be one of my best memories. President’s comments continued on next page

AUXILIARY NEWS: from Ann Ferguson

The Auxiliary plans to continue meeting monthly on the 2nd Friday of each month in 2015 at Dobson’s Restaurant, 2155 S. Dobson Rd, Mesa. Our next meeting is Friday, January

9th at 11am to pack boxes for Packages from Home, with luncheon at 11:30am.

We have less than $500 in our Packages from Home fund so we desperately need your donations to keep the project going. We need hygiene items such as baby wipes, cotton swabs, band aids, toothpaste, deodorant, etc: as well as snack items such as tootsie rolls, hard candy, gum, canned goods like chili, ravioli, soups, oatmeal, etc. We would like to send at least 10 boxes each month to the troops in 2015 but we can't do it without your help. Ask you friends, neighbors, and family to donate as well. Many want to help but don't know how, so give them a way to be involved.

I am happy to report your Auxiliary was able to pack and ship a total of 135 boxes to Packages from Home in 2014. Thanks to all of you who contributed, including the Boyle family, especially seven year old James, who chose to have family and friends brings items for Packages from Home to his birthday party instead of presents for himself. They added 10 boxes to our total in December.

We continue to support Operation Paperback as well and shipped 2 more boxes to troops in December and gave another 50+ hardback books to the Phoenix VA Hospital. We have shipped 104 boxes of books this year and taken over 702 books to the local VA Hospital since 2012.

If you have questions about Auxiliary meetings, Packages from Home or Operation Paperback, please call me at 480-961-9634 or email me at [email protected]. I will come to your home to pick up donations if you are unable to bring them to one of the meetings.

Our December Military Ball and

of Directors was a great success! With

everyone decked out in their finest, a

good time was had by all sharing food

and conversation with friends. Our

evening was topped off with the lovely

Christmas and Irish music played by

“The Strand”.

A few of our members didn’t make it to the dinner because of illness. We missed you, Melony & Tom Ralph, Vickie Pfitzer, George Meegan and Judy Burbank. Hope all of you are feeling better.

A message from

1st Vice President Greg Moore

Greetings all,

I hope this message finds all of you well and prepared to have a safe, healthy and prosperous new year.

We start the New Year with our dinner meeting on January 18th, at Dobson’s Restaurant, 2155 S Dobson Rd, Mesa. Social hour begins at 4pm with dinner at 5pm. Our menu choices will be Top Sirloin; Chicken Fettuccini or Fish & Chips. Reservations for the monthly dinners and lunches need to be made by no later than the 2nd Wed. of each month so the restaurant staff can be prepared. Your cooperation as always is appreciated.

Contact me at [email protected] or 480-814-0580.

As 1st VP of the chapter, one of my duties (with the much appreciated help of Meredith) will be to coordinate the monthly dinners.

An integral part of each dinner is a speaker/entertainment. This is where your input will be most appreciated. If you have been to a function which featured a speaker of interest or have an idea for a topic which would be of interest to the membership, please let me know. All ideas will be welcome.

Thanks

Greg Moore

CHAIRMAN REPORTS

2st Vice President Ed Fox Membership

I hope that the holidays were all you wanted them to be…mine were and I am eager to see 2015 unfold in all of its glory.

Speaking of the New Year, Ann Schminke is our new 2nd Vice President and will be in charge of membership. During 2014 we tried a few new things to try and increase our membership. We had some success. I hope all of you will work to help Ann in this endeavor.

Remember, an organization is only as strong as its members. Think about asking your friends, neighbors or acquaintances who were previously officers to check out and possibly join our chapter. It’s been my pleasure to serve as 2nd Vice for the past year.

Legislative Bob Delker

This past year the House and Senate passed and the President signed a huge

1.1 Trillion dollar spending bill without shutting the Government Down. The bill includes 554.1 billion for the Department of Defense and dedicates 159 billion to the Department of Veterans Affairs, of which 209 million dollars are to address new costs related to the bipartisan veterans' reform bill that was signed into law in August that adds more Medical Staff and expands dozens of facilities. The bill also includes 1.2 billion dollars to National Guard

and reserve budgets to replace equipment assets. It

blocks the Air Force from retiring the A-10 close support

aircraft and the U-2 spy plane, maintains the Navy's

carrier fleet at 11 ships and bans the transfer of terrorism

detainees from Guantanamo to the U.S.

The Department of Defense budget reinstates

appropriated fund support to the military commissary

system and prohibits the sale of tobacco products at

prices below local community rates. It increases

TRICARE pharmacy copayments by $3.00; requires

TRICARE patients taking name-brand medications for

chronic conditions to fill their prescriptions at a military

pharmacy or with a TRICARE home delivery program.

I'm hoping everyone had a Merry Christmas and a Happy

New Year and that 2015 becomes a great year for

everyone!

Treasurer Austin Foote Happy New Year! It’s time for me to make my pitch for all members who haven’t done so already to pay their chapter dues. Remember, chapter dues are different and separate

from national dues. Your chapter dues are $25.00 for regular members and $12.50 for Auxiliary members. You will find a coupon on page 11 for mailing in your dues. We appreciate your prompt response to this request.

ROTC Karl Pfitzer

Happy New Year to all and I trust you had an enjoyable holiday season. Welcome to another year of our Chapter’s support to local high schools’ and colleges’ ROTC training programs. For 2015 we will again support the

JROTC programs at 20 East Valley High Schools and three ROTC programs at Arizona State University. A list of the high schools we support can be found on our website. http://www.smcmoaa.org/ Our program provides the senior military instructor at each school with three chapter awards that can be given during the school’s annual recognition ceremony. The awards are:

• The MOAA Medal given for demonstrated

leadership;

• A US Flag, that has been flown over our nation’s

capital, for demonstrated patriotism;

• A $100 impact award to be given by the

instructor to a deserving cadet of his/her choice.

The schools’ awards programs are conducted near the end of the school year in April and May. Chapter members typically present the awards in person during these ceremonies. Our support of these programs and the junior leaders they are developing is one of the most important outreach programs our chapter supports. The awards are very well received and highly anticipated by the instructors and cadets.

The cost for each high school is $115.00. We still have 3 schools available for sponsorship. If you would like to sponsor a school please contact me.

We also still need Presenters for, Hamilton, Higley, Mesa and Red Mountain and Westwood High Schools. If you would like to attend one of the schools JROTC Awards Night and present for our chapter, contact me.
