The Board of Governors of the Suncoast Chapter of The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has voted to bestow the 2016 Silver Circle Awards to Allan Farrell, Joseph Harzinski, Kelley Mitchell, Lisa Petrillo, Omar Romay and Willard Shepard. This is the 28th consecutive year that these awards have been given in South Florida.

CHAPTER NEWS

Allan Farrell began his career as a production assistant with WPBT in 1979. He progressed to associate producer and then to cinematographer when a position opened. Over the years, Allan has worked on numerous special projects, including the documentary series “Common Ground”, nationally broadcast “Décor” and “Lady of the Glades”. As an adjunct instructor at Palm Beach State College, he taught editing and post production for more than 15 years. Currently, Allan is a full-time freelancer, both shooting and editing for ITV, whose programs are distributed worldwide.

Joseph Harzinski started his broadcast career as an intern in the sports department at WTVJ. He continued to intern at WTVJ for four years while attending Florida International University. After graduating in 1978, he was hired as a full-time photographer at WTVJ. From hurricanes and drug wars of the 1980’s to Muhammad Ali training before the last fight of his career — Joe has covered the best and worst of times in South Florida. He has had the privilege to work with the likes of Tony Segreto, Ike Seamans, Al Sunshine, David Bloom, Ralph Renick and Katie Couric to name a few. Joe is proud of his career and the many years he has spent at WTVJ uncovering Miami’s past history and the present.

Kelley Mitchell will be honored posthumously. For several years, Kelley Mitchell was a mainstay in South Florida television. In fact, the bulk of her 30-plus year career was spent here. She joined WSVN in 1991 as a general assignment reporter and weekend anchor. By January 1994, management named her primary co-anchor alongside Rick Sanchez. She remained at WSVN until 1998, when she joined WPLG and served in a number of capacities: reporting and on occasion, anchoring there as well. She later moved on to radio, captivating audiences at WLRN. Virtually from the start, and right up until the time she passed away last year, Kelley was unquestionably dedicated to her craft — and to the new generation of broadcast journalists who followed in her footsteps. Kelley cared deeply about the work of our industry and the people who are privileged to be a part of it. Her legacy lives on in many of them.

Lisa Petrillo is the Entertainment and Lifestyle Reporter for WFOR, CBS4. Throughout her years as South Florida’s premiere Entertainment Reporter, Lisa has interviewed many celebrities, among them Paul McCartney, Sting, Tom Cruise, Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Lopez, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Elton John, Tom Hanks, Warren Beatty and the late Audrey Hepburn. In addition to reporting on entertainment, Lisa hosts the CBS4 “Taste of the Town” segment celebrating South Florida’s growing culinary scene and reports on fashion, travel and other lifestyle trends. Lisa’s professional career began in 1986 as Communications Manager for the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau. That year, she began her television career at WPLG as a producer. She was named the station’s entertainment reporter in 1988. Following WPLG, Lisa became a national correspondent on the NBC show “Real Life”. She joined WFOR, CBS4 in 2001 as Entertainment and Lifestyle Reporter.

Omar Romay is the founder and CEO of America TeVe. For the last 18 years, Omar has worked day in and day out, to make America TeVe the successful company it has become, growing it from 20 to over 300 employees, and reaching audience levels that no one ever imagined. America TeVe’s success has served as a model for many other companies that have copied it’s formula, resulting in more competition, more people employed, and a better quality of local programming for Hispanics in South Florida. Motivated by Omar’s passion and strive for excellence, America TeVe’s programs and employees have won a total of 100 Suncoast Emmy® Awards as well as other industry recognitions.

Willard Shepard is a four-time Emmy® award winning journalist, attorney and Gulf War fighter pilot. Willard has brought his unique insight to NBC 6 viewers as an anchor and investigative reporter for more than 20 years. Shepard, a member of the Florida Bar, uses his legal skills to develop consumer investigations that uncover fraud in private business and government. He is a graduate of the Florida International University College of Law and specializes in media and aviation legal issues. Shepard graduated cum laude from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications and Theater.

The Silver Circle is awarded to distinguished individuals who have contributed aquarter of a century or more of exemplary excellence to the television industry.

DECO DRIVE CELEBRATES 20 YEARS OF DISHING!

Love it or hate it, “Deco Drive” is not your typical news show.

With its fast-paced format, flashy visuals and pop-culture blend of stories, the snarky info-tainment program on WSVN-Ch. 7 has been known for doing things its own way — even making film parodies and music videos.

Though it wasn’t always easy, “Deco Drive” celebrated two decades on the air and marked the special occasion by unveiling a brand-new virtual set with sleeker pinks and blues and images of downtown Miami in the background.

“We wanted to freshen up ‘Deco.’ We like to keep things changing for our viewers and keep things interesting,” said Alice Jacobs, vice president of news at the North Bay Village station. “It’s the same place, but the virtual set is much bigger in scope. It looks and feels bigger.”

Anchored by Lynn Martinez and Shireen Sandoval, the show regularly beats its national entertainment competitors “The Insider” and “Access Hollywood” at 7:30 p.m. “It’s a combination of the local connection, the personalities, really good editing and good pacing,” said Sam Terilli, department chairman at the University of Miami School of Communication, of the show’s endurance. “It’s a reflection of the strength of Ch. 7’s programming and, specifically, their news.”

“I think ‘Deco’ offers three things to viewers that they obviously like: celebrity, local stories and personality,” said Martinez. “We are not trying to be all ‘Entertainment Tonight.’ We are not trying to be all local news. It’s a mixture. It’s 30 minutes of escape, of happiness.”

WPLG HAS LAUNCHED ADDITIONAL WEEKEND NEWS

LOCAL 10 NEWS has expanded it’s news block to 5:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, adding an extra 30 minutes on Saturday mornings and Sunday mornings.

Todd Tongen and Neki Mohan anchor the newscast, along with meteorologist Jennifer Correa.

”We are very excited about expanding our weekend morning newscast,“ said WPLG President, Bert Medina. ”This expansion comes on the heels of launching 5 p.m. newscasts on Saturday and Sunday evenings, extending our political/public affairs series, This Week in South Florida, to an hour from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. on Sundays, and adding an hour of local news 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. on weekdays.“

NEW $250 MILLION NBC UNIVERSAL TELEMUNDO HEADQUARTERS BEING BUILT IN MIAMI-DADE

NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises is building new headquarters in West Miami-Dade that will house several of the company’s divisions, offices and production operations. The new 450,000-square-foot facility will be located in the Beacon Lakes district just west of the Florida Turnpike and the Ikea store at the Dolphin Mall. The new building will cost an estimated $250 million, one of the largest investments in a broadcast facility in South Florida history.

Telemundo claims that the construction of the building, which includes state-of-the-art TV production soundstages, will create 3,000 jobs and generate an estimated $400 million in sales for Florida businesses. The new facility will be completed in early 2018 — just in time for Telemundo’s first broadcast of the FIFA World Cup in the summer.

TAMPA SPORTS ANCHOR TO RETIRE By Kevin Eck TVSPY

WTVT sports director Chip Carter has announced his retirement from the Tampa Fox-owned station. Carter, who started at WTVT in 1988, teased the announcement during his newscast, then told viewers about it.

“I am retiring at FOX 13,” said Carter. “My last day on the air will be February 26.” He then thanked viewers and said it would be “so weird” to not spend time with his co-anchors.

“Chip Carter is an institution in Tampa Bay,” said news director John Hoffman. “His name has been synonymous with top notch sports coverage for many years. He truly is one of a kind. The station will miss him, our viewers will miss him, but we wish Chip all the best in retirement. I’m honored to say I worked with the legendary Chip Carter.”

MELISSA NARDO moves to WFLA as a reporter from WPMT, the York, PA Fox affiliate where she worked her way from assignment editor to writer to producer to special projects producer to reporter.

GEORGE SOLIS joins Baltimore CBS-owned WJZ. Solis comes from Fort Myers, FL NBC affiliate WBBH. He started there in August 2012. Before that, he worked at WNBW-WGFL in Gainesville, FL. He starts at WJZ on Tuesday, March 9th.

CHRISTY KERN will join WIVB as primary anchor of the Buffalo CBS affiliate’s new 4 p.m. newscast. Kern, who was married in December and changed her name from Andrews, comes from WBBH in Fort Myers, FL.

THE FOUNDATION OF THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF TELEVISION ARTS & SCIENCES ADDS TO COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM New York, N.Y. – The Foundation of The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences this year expands its college scholarship program with a new award recognizing Hispanic or Latino students aspiring to careers in television.

The minimum six-year commitment to the $10,000 annual scholarship honors the industry contributions of renowned media executive Randy Falco, currently the President and Chief Executive Officer of Univision Communications Inc. (UCI).

“Starting with his branding of NBC as the ‘network of the Olympics,’ leading the initiative for the NBC-Universal merger, and now as he continues to transform Univision from a niche broadcast network serving all aspects of the Hispanic community as well as multicultural and millennials, Randy Falco’s done it all,” said Chuck Dages, Chairman, NATAS. “This scholarship seeks to recognize his trailblazing career by advancing the future career of a young visionary.”

“The key to increasing diversity in our industry is access – something that Univision has worked on for close to 60 years. That is why I could not be prouder of this scholarship program to make sure that students have access to financial resources that will help them succeed,” said Randy Falco, president and CEO, UCI. “I want to thank everyone at NATAS for helping me achieve my mission of increasing diversity by creating more opportunities for future leaders in our industry.”

This new scholarship adds to our already distinguished national scholarships awarded to outstanding high school seniors planning to pursue television-related baccalaureate degrees, and now include:

The Randy Falco Scholarship ($10,000) — Awarded to a Hispanic or Latino student pursuing a career in any aspect of the television industry.The Jim McKay Memorial Scholarship ($10,000) — Awarded to a student pursuing a career in sports television.The Mike Wallace Memorial Scholarship ($10,000) — Awarded to a student pursuing a career in television journalism.The NATAS Trustees’ Scholarship ($10,000) — Awarded to a student pursuing a career in any aspect of the television industry.

This is the fourth year of the Mike Wallace Memorial Scholarship, funded by a five-year grant from CBS News in honor of longtime correspondent Mike Wallace (1918-2012) and presented each year at the News & Documentary Emmy® Awards. The Jim McKay Memorial Scholarship, now in its seventh year, honors sportscaster Jim McKay (1921-2008) and was established in 2009 by the HBO, CBS, NBC, ABC and FOX networks. It is presented at the Sports Emmy® Awards each May.

NATAS Trustees and officials with the National Scholarship Committee will review applications and creative works along with participation from UCI on the Randy Falco Scholarship. Final selections for all scholarships will be made in late April.
