February Meeting…At this month’s meeting Jerry Sorrell will provide an update on the airport master plan. He currently serves as the county representative on the KKLS airport board and he would like to promote the airport as a regional economic asset, more important than just a recreational use airport and how the general population views pilots has some sticky political issues. Jerry has a short PowerPoint of the proposed improvements. He also has some good news on reduction of hanger fees as the as the City realizes that the current marketplace cannot support higher fees.
January was an interesting weather month and not the best month to get out and exercise our airplanes.Even with that, the club is getting off to a good start this year with a great list of fly‐outs and events for the year. In the planning stages is an airport day in August. Initial plans is to host a swap meet, BBQ, YE Flights and invite the public for this 1st annual event. If you have any ideas or want to help with the event please step forward. We’ll need a lot of help on this one. It should be a good time and great fundraising opportunity for the club.The Washington Northwest Aviation Conference is coming up later this month so we can make plans for car/airplane pooling for anyone who would like to attend.

EAA Chapter Leaders Academy – Mark Cattell
An EAA Chapter Leaders Academy is an interactive workshop weekend focused on topics important to chapters. Participants stay at the EAA Air Academy lodge and immerse themselves in a wide‐range of chapter related subjects such as recruitment, fundraising, public relations, EAA resources, programs and more!Being new club officers and green behind the ears, George F. and I decided to attend an EAA Chapter Leaders Academy held at HQ in Oshkosh for a long weekend in January. This free Academy is provided by EAA only a few times per year. We were joined by 22 other chapter leaders from around the country. When we signed up for the Academy we really didn’t know what to expect or if it was worth taking a few days off from our jobs and convincing our wives that it was important for us to spend money on airline tickets to travel to Wisconsin in the middle of the winter.We were greeted by temperatures on Friday at below zero! Brrrrr. Friday evening was checking into the lodge, getting situated in our choice of bunk beds and doing a meet and greet with the other members from around the country.Saturday included a full agenda which included information on homebuilders community, Young Eagles, planning events, fundraising, membership growth, online resources and many other topics.One of the trip highlights was a lunch break on Saturday. It just happened to be the annual ski plane fly‐in at Pioneer Field that day and the weather was beautiful with clear, blue skies. Only 7 degrees, but we didn’t really notice that while watching ski planes fly in. We counted over 30 of them before lunch was over. Chili and chicken soup were served as well as cake for Audrey Poberezny’s birthday. It was absolutely awesome.Saturday night after the classroom workshop was done we were treated to something very few members get the opportunity to do. Our small group was taken to a room in the EAA museum that is a replica of the first original basement office of Paul & Audrey Poberezny from 1954. That wasn’t the best part though. The best part was Paul, now 90 years old, and Audrey were waiting and sitting at the same desks that sat in back then. Paul spoke to the group, answered questions and provided a tour of the Founder’s Wing. Wow, what a treat.We then retired to dinner at the lodge with Paul & Audrey, followed by a fireside chat hosted by Paul. What a great opportunity for us to spend some time with the founder of EAA. Paul then offered us a private museum tour, hosted by one of the staff, only after instructing him that we had full access, including behind any barriers. Of course we all took advantage of that including getting our photos taken while sitting in Paul’s P‐51.Sunday morning included an eye opening discussion on chapter insurance, working with the media and a few other topics. We were done after lunch and provided with a tour of the Sonex Aircraft facility on the other side of the airport. I’ll have to say I was very impressed. Mark Edwards & Loren Sievilamade a wise choice on their new OneX airplane kits. This appears to be a great up and coming company that is producing quality kits. We even saw the Jet and Electric Versions!So, was it worth it to take a few days off work, buy a airline ticket to Wisconsin and brave the below zero temperatures? Absolutely!!! This was a trip of the lifetime and hopefully we’ve learned a lot to help the members guide the club along this year. Now we need to work on getting a few more members back there that would like to get more involved in the club and experience the same opportunity we had. We’ll have some video of the ski plane fly‐in and fireside chat with Paul at the February meeting. Great stuff so don’t miss our next meeting!

PROPER MOUNTING OF ENGINE CONTROLS TO AVOID VIBRATION DAMAGETech Counselor: Jerry Sorrell
The typical aircraft engine is not mounted solidly to the motor mount, but is suspended and cushioned by “Lord” brand mounts which help to isolate the engine vibration from the airframe.
This vibration problem is most apparent during start up and shut down, when the engine performs its dance inside the cowling. When a Cessna 150 ‐152 shuts down, the engine will send a vibration through the airframe like a wet dog shaking off the water.
However, under normal operation the engine will run smooth and not much vibration is felt because of the Lord mounts. But don't be fooled, the engine is in a state of vibration, even when we think it is running dead smooth. So what does this have to do with the carburetor and mixture controls to the engine?
Over the years of my time as Tech Counselor, I occasionally find incorrect mounting of the throttle and mixture controls, with the firewall end of the bowden cabled mounted to the motor mount.
When the engine is running, it is in motion in the Lord mounts, apart from the motor mount. If the bowden cable is attached to the motor mount, the motion of the engine is transmitted to the connections at the carburetor throttle plate and the mixture control. This continuous vibration, even if small, will cause wear of the shafts of the carburetor and mixture.
The way to avoid this induced wear is to mount the bowden cables solidly to the engine via some type of bracket. In the photo below, the builder has installed such a bracket, which is sandwiched between the bottom of the intake manifold and the top of the carburetor. Now the bowden cables will work in harmony with the engine.

This Month’s Drive / Fly‐out Event
This month’s drive / fly‐out event is the annual Northwest Aviation Conference & Trade Show held at the Puyallup fairgrounds. For those who would like to carpool meet at the clubhouse at 8:00 AM on Saturday the 25th. It’s a good idea to hit a restaurant on the way to bulk up in preparation for walking around and checking out all the aviation booths. There’s always a great list of seminars including a few aviation dignitaries like Rod Machado. If you show up and need a ride we’ll make sure to find a ride for everyone who wants to attend.

In the unlikely event that the weather is favorable for flying, it’s a nice trip into pilot controlled ThunField. Spencer Aviation provides a free shuttle van to the fairgrounds. Of course it’s mandatory to visit their store. It’s like a candy store for pilots with pilot supplies and a huge inventory of aircraft hardware if you’re building. January Meeting Report
• Once again Al provided his usual gourmet dinner with spaghetti and fixin’s.
• Rustin reports that the tax exempt paperwork has been turned into the IRS for review and we should have something back within 90 days. Knowing the IRS we shouldn’t hold our breath on that one.
• Randy will be coming up with a fly‐out schedule which includes suggestions from members. Of course with emphasis on hundred dollar hamburger destinations.
• The annual summer BBQ meeting was set for the July meeting.
• Mark provided his short & embarrassing safety tip. See the newsletter write‐up by Randy. Don’t forget to volunteer to provide one at a future meeting.
• George provided a great presentation on use of cameras in the cockpit with a nice handout on options and editing software. He spoke about mounting options for mounting outside the cockpit but I’d discourage trying that with your high‐end professional model just because it’s time to upgrade! The highlight was the Young Eagle video from the last YE event. If you missed it you can see it on the EAA1111.org website.
The new program for flying young Eagles and Eagles is in full movement by HQ. They have launched a new Free Trial member ship to help get new people young and old interested in our exciting Hobby. More details to come. Check EAA.org for more information.
Randy Reinhofer ‐Last months safety topic was about the importance of using caution while being in and around the propeller arc. Mark Cattell (Callsign‐ Blade) was kind enough to share his story with us about one particular incident that involves 2 main ingredients. The first was 1 Whirlwind 200RV Propeller, chipped on the back side of the blade. The second, 1 human head, gashed on the top and bleeding profusely. In this particular cause, the shut down aircraft was undergoing inspection when the compression of the engine and the placement of the propeller was in a perfect combination to cause an unexpected rotation at a critical time. Luckily, no one was seriously injured, other than the prop that is.When operating in and around aircraft, remember to give the propeller arc a wide berth. Propeller strike injuries are fairly rare but usually involve passengers so remember to always shut down your engine before loading or unloading passengers. Spinning props are hard to see and not everyone is familiar with aircraft. Safe Flying!I will be providing the safety topic this month. The topic will be preflight procedures.We need more members to provide a quick safety topic for future meetings. Please volunteer for a future one. Come on, I know you’ve done something dumb we can all learn from!

Name the Airport Contest
Rustin Brewer had the first correct guess for this airport last month and enjoyed a free gourmet spaghetti dinner at the meeting. This is the Wasco State airport next to Wasco, Oregon which is SE of The Dalles. There is only a crop dusting operation there, but when you exit off the approach end of runway 7 you can taxi your airplane out a gate and literally taxi about a mile to the end of the taxiway. You’ll find 3 or 4 tie downs that are provided next to the road at the edge of town. Walk to the left about two blocks, turn left a couple blocks and cross the street to the local tavern / restaurant. You’ll be treated to one of the best hundred dollar hamburgers you’ve ever had. I would highly recommend this as a weekend fly‐out spot. Just be careful of the windmills on base to runway 25.

Past President Bill Heath at Large…Editor: Past President Bill Heath as you may be aware is out traveling the world. We were able to catch with him and get some details of his latest
travels… “Hello Everyone, Well today is a day at sea, so I will try to catch up on my reports. This has been quite an adventure so far. We left PDX on Thursday January 19th at 1:00pm and arrived in Auckland New Zealand at 6:30am on Saturday...you do the math! Then we stayed up the entire day on Saturday going on an Auckland City tour getting to bed about 9:00pm on Saturday night. Sunday we went on an all day tour to the Waitomo Grotto glow worm caves.
Yes, I know it sounds funny, but it is actually an awesome adventure. You get to the caves, walk deep down into them, then board an open boat that is pulled silently by cables down the underground river in the cave, and on the ceiling are millions of glow worms that light up like the stars on a dark clear night. It is the only place on earth that anyone has found so far where this phenomenon occurs...it was pretty cool. Monday we boarded the "Diamond Princess" cruise ship in Auckland. First stop was Tauranga New Zealand on Tuesday January 24th where we took a bus into the countryside to take a gondola ride to the top of Mount Ngongotaha, where we rode the high speed Luge's back down the mountain. I will let you know how that goes. Oh, in case you were wondering if we were getting enough to eat, well it has been hard.5 star gourmet meals 3 or 4 times a day....should be illegal. I am not even wearing a watch on this cruise anymore as we have learned that time is kept in one of two ways. Either by where and when do we meet for the next shore excursion......... or by when it is time to eat !!

Taxi into position and hold……..
Gossip from the Field..heard from not so reliable sources…George F. received four new Cylinders on his RV‐4 and has been out of commission for the few months. He’s been putting in extra hours to get it back together while making improvements. Tech Counselor Jerry Sorrel, Mark Cattell, Randy Reinhoferand Kelly Quick has been spotted checking out his work for help and safety. I know the club will thank them in keeping the sky a safer place.
Earlier in the day, Jim M., Jerry S. & Mark Cattell enjoyed a nice Fly‐out to Hoquiam for Breakfast. ( Sounds like it was a bumpy ride back though ) Loren and Mark are working hard on their Sonex kit’s…Loren is burning more wood than usual since the weather turned cold, but he reports he’s “nice and cozy” in his shop. Another fly‐by down the runway by our own U.S. Army! – What a great sight to see a Blackhawk up close. Mark Cattell has been busy creating a website for KSPB and added 122.80 live Audio… www.kspb‐wx.com. Could live Cameras be next?Hoquiam WA
