DISSOLVE TO:
INT. RAFAEL’S SUITE - THE MARBELLA - DAY

JANE and RAFAEL argue with each other.
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
Just as Jane and Rafael are seeking

QUICK CUT TO: Jane tells Rafael that there is no hope for
them being together.
DISSOLVE TO:
EXT. STREET - CZECH REPUBLIC - NIGHT

thriving on the set of his new
Telenovela!
QUICK CUT TO: A poster for Tiago a Traves del Tiempo.
3.
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
We’re just going to have to wait
and see how this all plays out...
DISSOLVE TO:
COLD OPEN
FADE IN:
INT. JANE’S BEDROOM - NIGHT (FLASHBACK)
Typed on screen: SEVEN YEARS AGO
JANE sits cross-legged atop her bed, various papers and
binders sprawled around her.
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
When Jane Gloriana Villanueva was
in high school, she suffered from a
brief period of insomnia.
She frantically writes something in one notebook before
flipping around to fill out another paper.
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
That is, our over-achiever signed
up for so many activities, the
workload kept her from getting any
sleep.
Jane lets out a muffled scream and chucks a handful of
highlighters at the wall.
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
And Jane is...a different person
when she doesn’t get any sleep.
DISSOLVE TO:
INT. JANE’S BEDROOM - MORNING
Jane lies face-down on a pile of papers, drool seeping from
her half-opened mouth.
A knock on the door, and ALBA enters Jane’s room.
She frowns at the sight, and walks to place a gentle hand on
her sleeping granddaughter.
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
Uh oh, this won’t end well.
4.
ALBA
Mija, it’s time for school. Wake
up-
At her touch, Jane wakes with a start. Groggily, she turns
to face her alarm clock. Jane’s eyes widen in horror.
Jane shoots out of bed, nearly falling over in the process.
JANE
I’M GOING TO BE LATE!
Alba watches with raised brows as Jane shoves miscellaneous
items into a backpack- binders, pens, a pillow.
ALBA
(carefully)
Mija, slow down-
JANE
If I don’t make it to class I’ll
miss my presentation and that’s 20%
of my grade and then I have debate
try outs and it’s the org fair at
lunch-
ALBA
Jane, we will still make it to
school on time.
JANE
Shut up! We will not!
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
Like I said, a different person.
Alba’s face crumbles, horror-struck at Jane’s words.
Jane’s anger dissipates when she realizes what she has said.
She drops her bag and stumbles backwards onto her bed. She
drops her head into her hands, shame slick on her face.
JANE
I’m so sorry, Abuela, I shouldn’t
have said that! I-I don’t know
what’s come over me.
Alba’s face slowly changes from hurt to understanding.
She moves to gingerly sit beside Jane. She places a gentle
hand on her granddaughter’s back.
5.
ALBA
I understand that you’ve been busy,
Jane. But you’re letting your
workload affect how you behave.
JANE
There are just so many different
activities I want to do! I don’t
want to miss out on something just
because I didn’t try...
ALBA
I’m not saying you can’t try
different things, mija. But you
shouldn’t do so much that you wear
yourself out. You’ll just take your
exhaustion out on the ones you
love.
Jane bows her head, she knows that Alba is right.
JANE
What should I do, Abuela?
ALBA
I suggest that you take a few
activities off your plate, see how
it feels.
JANE
...So you’re saying maybe I should
hold off on debate and go for
student council instead?
ALBA
I’m saying choose one thing to
focus on, and hold off on the rest.
(Jane nods)
Oh, and mija...do us all a favor
and get some sleep.
DISSOLVE TO:
INT. JANE’S KITCHEN - PRESENT
JANE sits at her kitchen table, hunched over a pile of
various books and paperwork.
She holds MATEO in one arm, and uses the other to type
frantically on her laptop.
XIOMARA looms over Jane’s shoulder, desperately trying to
catch her attention.
6.
XIOMARA
Jane! Earth to Jane!
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
You know what they say: old habits
die hard.
XIOMARA
When’s the last time you got a full
night’s sleep?
Jane finally tears her eyes from the screen and looks up at
Xio, annoyed.
Jane starts to pantomime counting days on her hand.
JANE
Hmm let me think...maybe, I dunno,
like 11 months ago. Before I had a
kid!
XIOMARA
(rolling her eyes)
Well what are you doing right now
that’s so important?
JANE
I have a short story for my fiction
class that’s due tomorrow and Mateo
kept waking up last night so I’m
trying to set him down for a nap
and dad’s filming a big scene on
set so I gotta pencil in time to
visit him, and...and...
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
Seems to me like one more straw
will break poor Jane’s back.
ALBA walks into the room, grasping a big white envelope.
ALBA
Mija, what is this?
Jane narrows her eyes at the envelope.
Recognition and horror fill her gaze.
JANE
No...it can’t be...
Jane gets up to check the calendar hanging by the fridge.
7.
JANE
No. No no no no NO.
One specific date is circled in red, the words JURY DUTY
underlined beside it.
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
And there’s that final straw...
Freeze-frame as Jane’s mouth opens into a silent scream.
AS TYPED ONSCREEN:
J A N E T H E V I R G I N
FADE OUT.
END OF COLD OPEN
ACT ONE
INT. MARBELLA - RAFAEL’S SUITE - DAY
RAFAEL paces heatedly back and forth in front of a
bored-looking PETRA.
RAFAEL
You do realize we’re having kids,
right? That pretty soon we’re going
to have to work as a team and
parent together.
Petra sighs, examines her cuticles.
PETRA
What’s your point, Raf?
RAFAEL
My point is that we haven’t done
anything to prepare for this! We
should be attending classes,
reading books, doing something
productive! Instead we-
Rafael’s cellphone rings, interrupting his thought.
RAFAEL
Hello?
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
Whose call could possibly be more
important than arguing with your
ex-wife-future-baby-mama-current-coworker?
8.
RAFAEL
Yes, perfect timing. Come on up.
Rafael hangs up the phone, now calm.
PETRA
Please tell me that’s room service
and not another shrink you’ve
called to chastise me. I’m in the
mood for Eggs Benedict-not a
therapist.
RAFAEL
Not quite.
A knock at the door. Rafael opens it to reveal JANE standing
in the doorway, MATEO in her arms.
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
Ooh, the phone call was from
ex-girlfriend-current-baby-mama-past-employee,
Jane! That makes sense.
RAFAEL
Hi Jane!
(to Petra)
This is our chance to work
together!
Petra looks at a squirming Mateo, then down at her stomach,
then back to Rafael in horror.
JANE
Thank you for taking Mateo so last
minute, Raf! I can’t believe I
forgot I had-
Jane looks past Rafael to Petra, down to Mateo, then back to
Rafael in horror.
JANE
Wait, are you and Petra
babysitting...together?
PETRA
I’m sorry, did someone just say
’babysitting’?
RAFAEL
(ignoring Petra)
Yeah, I thought it would be good
practice for us. You know, for the
co-parenting thing.
9.
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
Yikes. Those are definitely not the
words Sleep Deprived Jane will want
to hear.
JANE
I don’t know how comfortable I am
with you using Mateo as an
experiment.
PETRA
Hey! Yeah, I’m not comfortable
either!
RAFAEL
That’s not what this is, at all.
Petra’s going to be a new mother
soon too, I’m just trying to help
us figure the whole thing out.
JANE
Yeah? Well...well...
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
Luckily for Rafael, Sleep Deprived
Jane isn’t too quick at comebacks.
JANE
I’m not a fan of this arrangement-
A BEEP pulls Jane’s attention to her phone. Her eyes widen
as she checks the time.
JANE
I need to go, but I’ll be back to
pick up Mateo later tonight. We’ll
discuss this then.
RAFAEL
Everything will go smoothly, I
promise.
Door closes in time for Jane to miss Rafael’s sure smile
fade into something more bleak.
Behind him, Petra looks like she’s going to be sick.
PETRA
I would have preferred the shrink.
DISSOLVE TO:
INT. TELENOVELA SET- DAY
10.
Chaos on set.
Crew members run around frantically, calling out different
directions.
A backdrop is aflame, smoke billowing around the set.
ROGELIO stands frozen in the center of the chaos.
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
Oh look, another typical day on
set.
ROGELIO
(screaming)
THIS IS NOT A GOOD DAY TO BE
ROGELIO!
Freeze frame onto Rogelio’s panicked face.
AS TYPED ON SCREEN: Six Hours Earlier...
DISSOLVE TO:
INT. JANE’S KITCHEN - DAY
JANE sits slumped over kitchen table, her head buried in her
arms.
She talks face-down, her voice muffled.
JANE
I can’t believe I have jury duty.
Today of all days.
XIOMARA and ALBA exchange a concerned look.
XIOMARA
Look on the bright side, Janey!
There will be a lot of sitting at
the courthouse- you can finally
take that break!
Jane lifts her head to glare daggers at Xiomara.
JANE
Mom! I don’t need a break, I need
to get my work done!
At this, ROGELIO bursts into the room.
11.
ROGELIO
Did you say jury duty, Jane? I am
an expert on jury duty! I once
played a judge on The Passions of
Santos. All of the critics were
outraged my performance wasn’t
nominated for an EMMY.
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
You know, I never did see those
headlines.
Rogelio sweeps out a dramatic arm, accidentally knocking a
class of orange juice onto his pants.
Rogelio stares immobilized at the now free-flowing juice
pooling over the table and onto his clothes.
XIOMARA
Earth to Rogelio? Are you gonna
clean that up?
ROGELIO
(dazed)
Sorry, these things don’t normally
happen to me...I have very
graceful, swan-like movements. I
avoid mess like Charo avoids me!
XIOMARA
Whatever. Just clean it up.
Rogelio grabs some napkins, but his expression betrays that
something else is on his mind.
CUT TO QUICK SERIES OF DRAMATIC SNAPSHOTS:
SNAPSHOT Rogelio checking himself out in a mirror, finding
spinach stuck in his teeth.
SNAPSHOT Rogelio walking down the street, waving to his
adoring fans, stumbling over a crack in the sidewalk.
SNAPSHOT Rogelio flipping through a gossip mag, finding
himself not nominated for Hottest Star of the Week-losing
out to his arch rival, Esteban Santiago.
DISSOLVE TO:
INT. JANE’S KITCHEN - PRESENT
Rogelio drops the napkins, realization dawning on his face.
Quick zoom onto Rogelio’s horrified expression.
12.
ROGELIO
I’VE BEEN CURSED!
AS TYPED ON SCREEN: #Rogelicurse #HollywoodDreaming
#DeLaVictim
CUT TO:
INT. MIAMI MUNICIPAL COURTHOUSE - DAY
JANE argues with a BAILIFF who leads her toward jury seats.
JANE
You don’t understand- I can’t serve
on this jury! I...I’m a racist! I
believe in capital punishment! I
think aliens are real!
BAILIFF
Above my paygrade, ma’am. Take a
seat.
Jane dejectedly takes a seat on a bench behind four other
jurors.
She fidgets in her chair. With nothing else to do but wait,
she stews in her anger from her argument with Rafael.
Then, Jane leans forward to address the juror in front of
her.
JANE
You don’t happen to know what this
trial is about, do you?
The juror turns around, revealing MICHAEL CORDERO.
JANE
(blanching)
Michael? W-what?
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
What a crazy coincidence! Jane AND
her on-again-off-again-on-again
lover, serving on the same jury?
What are the chances?
Michael raises a finger to his lips, and points toward the
front of the courtroom.
A handcuffed MAN and WOMAN enter the room wearing orange
jumpsuits, their faces downturned.
13.
JANE
Seriously, Michael, what are you
doing here? Are you on this case?
A juror sitting beside Michael turns around, revealing
XIOMARA.
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
Something tells me this might be
more than a crazy coincidence...
XIOMARA
Honestly, Janey, be quiet. You
won’t want to miss this.
Jane sits back into her seat dumbfounded, but reverts her
attention to the front of the room.
JUDGE (O.S.)
Good morning ladies and gentleman,
court is now in session. Calling
the defense and prosecution, are
both sides ready?
The JUDGE turns into view, and Jane lets out an audible
gasp.
The judge is Jane- wearing a black robe and white wig.
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
Wait, did we switch channels? This
feels more like The X-Files revival
than Jane the Virgin...
The DISTRICT ATTORNEY and PUBLIC DEFENDER nod in unison.
JUDGE
You may present your case for The
People versus The Solanos.
The couple in handcuffs turn to face the jury, revealing a
haggard-looking RAFAEL and PETRA SOLANO.
CU on Jane’s dumbfounded expression as she begins to
mouth...
PETRA (O.S.)
What the hell?!
CUT TO:
INT. RAFAEL’S SUITE - THE MARBELLA - DAY
14.
PETRA and RAFAEL stand at odds, looming over a playing
MATEO.
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
Woah, am I seeing doubles? If Raf
and Petra are here...I think our
poor Jane might’ve gone off the
deep-end!
PETRA
First you spring this, this
creature on me and now you’re
asking me to...!
Petra throws up her hands, unable to form the words.
Rafael regards her with contempt.
RAFAEL
It’s just a dirty diaper, Petra.
Your first of many, I might add.
On the ground, Mateo coos, reaching up to be held. Petra
recoils from his touch.
RAFAEL
We’re having twins! You’re going to
have to get over your fear of
parenting somehow!
PETRA
Afraid? Please. I grew up on the
wrong side of the Iron Curtain.
CUT TO QUICK SERIES OF DRAMATIC SNAPSHOTS:
SNAPSHOT A dirty Petra playing her violin in Czech streets
for money.
SNAPSHOT Petra dodging out of the way of MILOS’ acid attack.
SNAPSHOT Petra and MAGDA fleeing down a dark street in
disguises.
PETRA
I eat fear with cornflakes for
breakfast. I can handle a few dirty
diapers.
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
It’s true, not much is scarier than
Petra’s breakfast
Petra points a finger at Mateo.
15.
PETRA
Give me the thing.
Rafael sighs but picks up Mateo and hands him over.
ASSISTANT DIRECTOR (O.S.)
This is going to be a disaster!
CUT TO:
INT. TELENOVELA SET - DAY
The cast and crew of Tiago a Traves del Tiempo are gathered
around a PIRATE SHIP set.
Half of the crew are slumped down in chairs, or lean tiredly
against the craft service table.
The ASSISTANT DIRECTOR taps a foot impatiently, checks his
watch.
Finally, he throws down his clipboard- he’s had enough.
ASSISTANT DIRECTOR
If he’s not here in 5 seconds, we
will never get back on schedule!
Suddenly, with a BANG, the studio doors fly open.
Sunlight bursts through the doors, creating a halo-effect
around ROGELIO as he emerges in the doorway.
Decked out in full ’Tiago’ costume and makeup, he struts
towards the crew in slow motion.
Rogelio’s skin is luminous, hair shiny and bouncy- he is the
picture of confidence and grace.
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
Wow! Looks like Rogelio recovered
from his so-called ’curse’ pretty
quickly!
Rogelio reaches the rest of the crew, dipping into a low
bow.
A lone GAFFER claps from the back of the crowd.
ROGELIO
I am sorry that I am late, my
esteemed crew and colleagues! I was
having a bit of an off morning. But
I am here and back to feeling my
usual Rogelio self!
16.
The A.D. checks the time on his watch, barely listening to
Rogelio’s excuse.
ASSISTANT DIRECTOR
Great. Let’s just go up for a take,
shall we?
ROGELIO
Excellent suggestion,
assistant-in-training! I’m ready!
Rogelio walks jauntily to the stairs of the pirate ship,
missing the A.D.’s death glare.
He almost makes it to the top, but trips on the last step.
After recovering with a nervous chuckle, he moves to get by
a CAMERA MAN, accidentally bumping into a WOMAN holding a
boom mic instead.
The mic drops to the floor with a CRASH, sending Rogelio
flying backwards into the ASSISTANT DIRECTOR.
The A.D. falls to the ground with a cry.
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
I may have spoken too soon.
AS TYPED ON SCREEN:
THE FIRST SIGN OF A CURSE: SUDDEN OR UNUSUAL BAD LUCK
Close up on Rogelio’s expression of horror.
CUT TO:
INT. MIAMI MUNICIPAL COURTHOUSE - DAY
Close up on JANE’S horrified expression.
She sits on the juror bench, gaping open-mouthed at the
scene before her.
PETRA and RAFAEL SOLANO stand next to the PUBLIC DEFENDER at
the defendant’s table, awaiting trial.
JUDGE JANE SMACKS her gavel on the podium.
JUDGE JANE
Let us hear from the prosecution
and the defense!
The DISTRICT ATTORNEY rises and turns to face the jury,
revealing WESLEY MASTERS.
17.
Jane audibly gasps. She rubs her eyes in disbelief.
AS TYPED ON SCREEN:
WESLEY MASTERS: Jane’s ex-friend from college who was
ex-pelled for his ex-pose on the Solanos. AKA: a real piece
of work.
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
Once a rat, now a rat in a suit.
Wesley addresses the room, looking very much the part of a
suave lawyer.
WESLEY
Your Honor and ladies and gentlemen
of the jury, I am here to present
to you the case against the
Solanos. We have reason to believe
the defendants are guilty of
reckless behavior and withholding
pertinent information. They are
unfit to take care of a child and
my evidence will prove them guilty
as charged.
Wesley smugly takes his seat.
The PUBLIC DEFENDER rises. She turns to address the judge
and jury, revealing LINA.
LINA
Your Honor and ladies and gentlemen
of the jury: during this trial, you
will hear no real evidence against
my clients. You will come to know
the truth: my clients are
trustworthy, loving parents and are
not guilty.
JUDGE JANE
Prosecution may call its first
witness.
WESLEY
The People call Jane Villanueva to
the stand.
MICHAEL, XIOMARA and ALBA turn in their seats to stare as
Jane let’s out a gasp of surprise.
FADE OUT.
18.
END OF ACT I
ACT II
INT. NURSERY - RAFAEL’S SUITE - MID-DAY
RAFAEL and PETRA loom over a changing table. MATEO wriggles
around happily in a clean diaper.
Rafael regards Petra appreciatively.
RAFAEL
I’m impressed, that wasn’t half
bad.
PETRA
Yeah, well, I told you I wasn’t
scared of...it.
RAFAEL
Mateo.
PETRA
Him.
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
I guess you could say Petra is
taking ’baby steps’! Ha! Get it?
RAFAEL
We’ll work on it. What other
baby-wrangling skills have you been
holding out on me?
Petra cracks a smile.
PETRA
Oh, you’d be surprised. I’m not
always an ice queen.
Rafael nudges her playfully.
RAFAEL
Oh yeah? Prove it.
Petra nudges him back. Then, feigns seriousness.
PETRA
Name a time and place. You’re on,
Solano!
Rafael laughs, his face brightening. He has an idea.
19.
RAFAEL
There’s something I want to show
you. C’mon.
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
Call me crazy but are Rafael and
Petra actually getting along?
CUT TO:
INT. MIAMI MUNICIPAL COURTHOUSE - MID-DAY
JANE sits paralyzed on the JUROR’S BENCH.
WESLEY
I call Jane Villanueva to the
stand!
Jane stays seated, her wide-eyes searching for answers on
the faces of her family in front of her.
WESLEY motions to the BAILIFF behind Jane.
Jane turns her head to find ROGELIO wearing a police
uniform.
ROGELIO
C’mon Jane, you heard the man. Walk
to the stand.
Shocked, Jane allows Rogelio to usher her to the front of
the courtroom.
Gingerly, she moves behind the WITNESS STAND.
JUDGE JANE
Jane Gloriana Villanueva, do you
swear to speak the truth, the whole
truth, and nothing but the truth,
so help you God?
A BIBLE magically appears in Jane’s hands.
She gulps, looking around the room for help.
JANE
I-I guess?
The bible disappears with a POP and a plume of smoke.
WESLEY
Ms. Villanueva, will you please
state your relationship to the
defendants?
20.
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
Do you mean her ex baby-daddy and
her baby-daddy’s ex-lover?
Jane looks across the courtroom to RAFAEL and PETRA.
They watch her with wide eyes.
JANE
I don’t understand what’s going on
here-I think there’s been some kind
of mistake...?
WESLEY
Stick to the question, Ms.
Villanueva. Your relationship?
Jane wipes a bead of sweat from her forehead.
She looks to the juror bench where MICHAEL, ALBA and XIOMARA
are sitting. They nod their heads for her to continue.
Jane takes a deep breath.
JANE
(rapidly)
About a year ago I was accidentally
artificially inseminated with
Rafael’s sperm by his half-sister
Luisa and even though we didn’t
really know each other we decided
to keep the baby which turns out
was the best decision of my life so
now we share our son Mateo as
co-parents and a couple months ago
Petra was artificially inseminated
as well making her kids my son’s
half-siblings I guess.
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
Did you catch that, transcriber?
The transcriber, JONATHAN CHAVEZ, types frantically at a
keyboard, choking back silent sobs.
Murmurs sweep the courtroom.
CU Alba rubs her temples, shaking her head.
CU Xiomara raises her eyebrows, but shrugs concedingly.
CU Michael sits with his arms crossed- in a visible huff
that he wasn’t mentioned.
21.
JUDGE JANE pounds her GAVEL, silencing the whispers.
WESLEY
Ms. Villanueva, would you say your
relationship with the Solanos is
positive? Or do you not get along?
LINA
Objection, Your Honor! Leading the
witness!
JUDGE JANE
Sustained.
WESLEY
I’ll re-phrase. Ms. Villanueva, do
you think you have a good
relationship with the Solanos? Or
is it a bad one?
LINA
YOUR HONOR!
JUDGE JANE
Sustained! Watch it, Masters!
Wesley rolls his eyes, turns back to Jane.
WESLEY
Ms. Villanueva, how would you
describe your relationship with the
Solanos?
Jane glances quickly to Rafael and Petra, who are watching
her in rapt attention.
JANE
It’s fine. We all get along fine.
Wesley cocks his head to the side.
WESLEY
Interesting. Did you not consider
filing for sole custody of Mateo
only last year, Ms. Villanueva?
Because you deemed Mr. Rafael
Solano unfit to parent?
Jane blanches, unsure of what to say.
JANE
No! I mean, yes, I thought about
it. But only because-
22.
WESLEY
And did you not have an altercation
with Ms. Petra Solano after her
mother pushed your Abuela down the
stairs?
JANE
Okay, yes, we did, but see-
WESLEY
That doesn’t sound like you having
a ’fine’ relationships with the
Solanos, Ms. Villanueva. And I
think the jury will agree.
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
I preferred it when this character
was written-out.
WESLEY
Not to mention Rafael’s playboy
past, or that time he lost Michael
his job! And don’t get me started
on Petra Solano! If that is even
her real name...
JANE
That’s not fair! Rafael isn’t the
person he was when I first met him!
And we’ve talked through our
problems- we’ve all made mistakes.
Petra and Rafael and I agree we
need to make compromises for the
sake of our family!
WESLEY
How very diplomatic of you, Jane.
Strange that just this morning you
felt uncomfortable leaving Mateo in
their care.
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
Point for the character with the
bad attitude.
JANE
I...
Jane shakes her head, unable to come up with an explanation.
WESLEY
Doesn’t seem to me like you’ve
really forgiven them, have you?
23.
Jane’s shoulders slump, she looks defeated.
In the stands, Alba nudges Xiomara, nods her head.
Rafael and Petra stare at Jane unblinkingly, distress clear
on their faces.
Wesley watches Jane with a smug smile.
WESLEY
No further questions, Your Honor.
CUT TO:
INT. DRESSING ROOM - TELENOVELA SET - MID-DAY
ROGELIO sits in a director’s chair at his vanity.
Somewhat frantically, he hums "It’s A Good Day to Be
Rogelio".
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
I’ve got a question...
In his hands, Rogelio clutches ROSARY BEADS. An INDALO MAN
CHARM hangs from a chain on his neck. His button down shirt
is green, adorned with stitched FOUR LEAF CLOVERS.
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
Is it just me, or does Rogelio seem
a little paranoid?
AS TYPED ONSCREEN:
THE SECOND SIGN OF A CURSE: INTENSE FEELINGS OF PARANOIA
A KNOCK on the door distracts Rogelio from his humming.
ROGELIO
Enter!
A haughty-looking LUCIANA LEON steps into the room.
AS TYPED ONSCREEN:
LUCIANA LEON: ROGELIO’S EX-WIFE, EX-COSTAR, EX-TRA MEAN
Rogelio jumps in his seat, almost dropping his rosary beads
in surprise.
ROGELIO
What are you doing here?
24.
Luciana crosses her arms and regards Rogelio with a
predatory smile.
LUCIANA
You mean to say I can’t drop in
from time to time to see how my
favorite ex-husband is doing?
Rogelio eyes her with distrust.
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
If I do recall, the last time
Luciana ’dropped in’, she
blackmailed Rogelio into giving her
a starring role on his show.
ROGELIO
What do you want now, Luciana? More
money? Another job? My fame?
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
Children’s tears? The resurrection
of the Antichrist?
Luciana laughs. She moves to stand behind Rogelio so that
they both gaze into his mirror.
LUCIANA
No, my silly, stupid Rogelio.
She rests her hands on his shoulders, holding him in a
position eerily similar to a vice.
LUCIANA
I came because the word on the
street is that you’ve been cursed.
CUT TO:
INT. HALLWAY - MARBELLA - MID-DAY
RAFAEL AND PETRA walk from their suite towards the
elevators, MATEO cradled in Rafael’s arms.
As they turn a corner, a BELLBOY notices Rafael, and
frantically waves him over.
RAFAEL
Curse of the job. Give me one sec.
Here, take Mateo!
Before she can object, Rafael drops Mateo into her arms and
scurries away.
25.
PETRA
Raf!
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
What was Petra saying earlier?
Something about eating fear for
breakfast...?
She looks down at Mateo, fear plain on your face.
PETRA
Uh. Hello, child.
Mateo coos, waving his arms up at her.
He latches onto a strand of her hair, wrapping it around his
small fist.
Petra tries unsuccessfully to wrangle her hair free from
Mateo’s grip.
PETRA
Bad child! No!
Mateo laughs at her distress, grabs another fistful of hair.
Petra looks around the hallway for help. Rafael still talks
to the distressed bellboy. She is all alone.
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
Use your words, Petra!
PETRA
Let go, you little cretin!
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
Not those words!
Suddenly, Mateo’s hand goes limp, dropping her hair. He
stares up at her with wide, teary eyes.
PETRA
No! No no no no! Don’t you dare-
Mateo begins to sniffle at her tone.
PETRA
Oh no! Please don’t cry!
Before he can begin wailing, she starts rocking him in her
arms.
26.
PETRA
Shh! Shh, it’s okay! I’m sorry,
liebling. Please don’t cry!
Petra begins to hum a quiet melody- a German lullaby.
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
Petra is a lot of things, but I
never pegged her as a Disney
princess in disguise!
After a moment of rocking, Mateo quiets in her arms.
He presses a sleepy face into her neck.
Petra blows out a sigh of relief. Crisis averted.
She looks down at the child with something akin to a smile.
Caught in the moment, she doesn’t hear Rafael’s footsteps
behind her.
RAFAEL (O.S)
What’s a ’liebling’?
Petra turns in surprise.
Rafael stands before her, a smile forming on his face.
PETRA
Something my mother never called
me.
AS TYPED ONSCREEN:
Liebling = A German word for ’sweetheart’
Rogelio nods at Mateo in her arms.
RAFAEL
You two look good together.
Petra snorts, hiding a smile.
PETRA
Yeah, turns out I’m a total pro at
this whole ’motherhood’ thing.
RAFAEL
(sincerely)
Looks like it.
27.
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
For the audience at home, I think
this is called ’sharing a moment’.
Petra looks away, clears her throat.
PETRA
Didn’t you say you had something to
show me?
JUDGE JANE (O.S.)
Show me the defense!
CUT TO:
INT. COURTROOM
JANE remains behind the witness stand.
She watches with curiosity as LINA whispers something into
her clients’ ears.
RAFAEL and PETRA nod, and Lina moves to replace WESLEY at
the front of the courtroom.
LINA
I have some questions for the
witness, Your Honor.
JUDGE JANE
The defense is permitted.
Lina turns to address the courtroom.
LINA
While the prosecution has made a
valiant effort to villainize my
clients, let’s get back to what is
relevant, shall we?
Wesley snorts, kicks his feet up on the table in front of
him.
Lina turns back to face Jane.
LINA
Ms. Villanueva, you seem conflicted
about the quality of Rafael and
Petra Solano’s character. Let me
refresh your memory. Please answer
a simple ’true’ or ’false’ to the
following statements.
28.
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
If high school report cards are any
indicator, Jane excels at ’true’ or
’false’. She’ll ace this test.
LINA
True or false, Rafael Solano
supported you wholly throughout
your pregnancy. He studied every
baby book, accompanied you to every
class.
Jane is taken aback, this is not was she was expecting.
FLASHBACK to Jane and Rafael sitting cross-legged and
laughing at a Lamaze class.
JANE
That’s true.
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
Nailed it.
LINA
True or false, Rafael has never let
you down when you needed help with
Mateo.
FLASHBACK Rafael driving for hours to Jane’s Writer’s
Retreat to bring her a breast pump.
FLASHBACK Rafael cancelling plans with investors to babysit
Mateo last minute.
Jane’s shoulders relax, she’s lost in thought.
JANE
True.
LINA
True of false, Petra Solano, for
better or for worse, puts her
family above all else.
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
That’s one way to put it...
FLASHBACK Petra confronting Magda about pushing Alba down
the stairs.
FLASHBACK Petra defending her mother from Jane, despite not
agreeing with what Magda did.
29.
JANE
I guess that’s true in a really
roundabout way-
LINA
True or false, Petra and Rafael
Solano have demonstrated on
numerous occasions that not only do
they care about their family, but
they are willing to make sacrifices
for the betterment of those they
love.
FLASHBACK Rafael allowing Jane to have Mateo four days of
the week, compared to his three.
FLASHBACK Petra attending the Villanueva’s Thanksgiving
Dinner.
LINA
True or false, Petra and Rafael
Solano have proven themselves to be
competent, caring individuals,
worthy of your trust.
FLASHBACK Petra going out of her way to help Jane confront
the author who stole her ideas.
FLASHBACK Rafael offering to pay for Jane’s dream home so
that he can stay close to Mateo
The FLASHBACKS come faster now, a blur of different memories
FLASHBACK of a shared smile between Petra and Jane, of
Rafael swinging Mateo around in his arms, of Mateo taking
his first steps at the Marbella.
LINA
True or false, Jane?
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
I take it back! This is harder than
any high school test I’ve ever
taken!
Jane opens and closes her mouth, reeling from the flood of
memories.
Tears well in her eye as her gaze lands on Rafael and Petra.
JANE
I- I don’t know.
Lina shakes her head, disappointed.
30.
LINA
I wonder, Jane, if it’s not the
Solanos who should be on trial.
Looks like it’s you who needs to
learn to compromise.
CUT TO:
INT. MARBELLA - EARLY AFTERNOON
RAFAEL and PETRA stand before a set of closed, white doors.
Mateo wobbles clumsily between them, holding onto each of
their hands.
RAFAEL
I’ve been thinking a lot about
compromises lately.
PETRA
And?
RAFAEL
And I’ve decided that I’m sick of
them. I don’t want to have to
compromise between work and family
anymore. Lately it’s become clear
that one doesn’t even compare.
Petra looks up at Rafael questioningly.
Rafael gives her a sly smile, then moves to push the doors
open.
Petra peers inside, then raises an eyebrow.
PETRA
You’ve taken me to...the ballroom?
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
As far as grand romantic gestures
go, this seems a
little...lackluster.
Rafael chuckles and ushers her inside.
In the center of a large room stands a single PODIUM. Draped
across the top is a large, blue paper.
As Rafael and Petra move closer, it becomes clear that the
paper is a BLUEPRINT.
Rafael reaches for the blueprint and holds it up.
31.
At the top of the paper are the words: MARBELLA PLAYROOM
PETRA
A...playroom? Rafael, what is this?
RAFAEL
Did you know that The Marbella has
three ballrooms? Three! Why would a
hotel ever need that many?
Rafael opens up his arms wide as he regards the space.
RAFAEL
Lot’s of natural lighting, hardwood
floors, no small crevices or sharp
corners- this space would make for
a perfect playroom.
PETRA
Raf. What are you talking about?
RAFAEL
You know, for families staying at
the Marbella to take their kids! I
want my hotel to reflect the man I
have become- the values I actually
care about. The Marbella isn’t a
Bachelor’s resort, not anymore. I
want our children to grow up in a
space where they feel welcome.
PETRA
You’re doing this...you’re doing
this for our kids?
RAFAEL
I’m doing this for us. And for the
people we want to be. I don’t know
about you, but I am so sick of
pretending anything is more
important to me than family.
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
Now that’s a romantic gesture if
I’ve ever seen one!
Petra falls quiet. She turns in a circle to regard the room.
After a full 360, Petra looks at Mateo. His little hand
is still wrapped around her fingers.
She looks up at Rafael with a hopeful smile.
32.
PETRA
Family. I like the sound of that.
CUT TO:
INT. ROGELIO’S DRESSING ROOM - TELENOVELA SET
ROGELIO watches LUCIANA’S reflection in his mirror.
He’s shaking his head in a silent ’no’.
LUCIANA
We used to be family, Ro, I’m just
trying to help you sort out your
little curse.
ROGELIO
A curse? What curse? There’s n-no
curse!
Luciana spins Rogelio’s chair around so that he faces her.
Her sweet expression immediately turns sour.
LUCIANA
Now is not the time to lie to me,
Rogelio. A curse is serious in this
business. Life-altering!
Fame-ruining!
Rogelio cries out like he’s in pain.
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
I didn’t know curses were so
commonplace...
LUCIANA
You don’t want to kiss your future
EGOT goodbye all because of a
curse, do you?
AS TYPED ONSCREEN:
EGOT= Winners of an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar AND Tony
Rogelio’s face contorts.
A THINK BUBBLE appears over his head as Rogelio imagines
accepting his awards. CHARO hugs him as he receives an
Oscar.
The think bubble pops. Rogelio’s eye twitches.
33.
ROGELIO
Even if I did have a ’curse’, why
would you care?
Luciana scoffs like the answer is obvious.
LUCIANA
What do you think people would say
about me if my ex-husband’s career
goes down the drain?!
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
Uh...nothing?
LUCIANA
Your status as a washed up C-lister
would tarnish my status. And you
know better than anyone that image
is everything.
ROGELIO
Please, Luciana, we all know I am
at the top of the B-list. But if I
were to listen to you...what do you
know about my ’curse’?
Luciana flashes a wicked smile.
LUCIANA
I know how to stop it.
WESLEY (O.S.)
Stop harassing the witness!
CUT TO:
INT. COURTROOM
JANE looks on from the WITNESS STAND, mouth agape.
Her gaze flickers from LINA to WESLEY and back again.
WESLEY
We all know the truth- the Solanos
are guilty!
LINA
Guilty of loving their families!
JUDGE JANE pounds her gavel, silencing the argument.
She turns to stare at Jane.
34.
JUDGE JANE
It’s time to come to a decision,
Jane. Are the Solanos guilty or
not-guilty?
Jane looks around in shock, points to herself.
JANE
You’re asking me? Am I honestly
qualified to make this decision?
LATIN LOVER NARRATOR
In normal circumstances, I would
have to say no, but...
JUDGE JANE
This is your dream, Jane! You have
to decide.
LINA
It’s all up to you, Jane.
Jane gulps, opens her mouth to protest, then- a medley of
voices interrupt her objections.
ALBA
Mija, think of the future of your
family!
XIOMARA
What does your heart tell you,
Janey?
MICHAEL
I support whatever you decide,
sweetheart!
Jane shrinks away from the stand, overwhelmed.
WESLEY
Make a decision, Jane!
JUDGE JANE
Time to decide, Jane. What will it
be?
Jane looks around for help, growing increasingly more
agitated.
JANE
Please! I don’t know!
35.
LINA (O.S.)
You know what the right choice is.
Jane turns toward Lina’s voice, jumps in shock when she
finds herself staring back at her.
Jane is now wearing Lina’s pantsuit, taking her place as
Public Defender.
WESLEY (O.S.)
Tick tock, Jane.
Jane pivots toward Wesley, only to find another Jane has
taken his place.
A medley of voices begin to call her name, as Jane turns to
look, new Jane’s pop up, replacing everyone left in the
courtroom.
Jane faces a room full of Jane’s staring her down.
She can’t take the pressure anymore- covers her ears with
her hands.
JANE
STOP IT! STOP! I CAN’T- DON’T MAKE
ME DECIDE! I CAN’T DECIDE-
CUT TO:
INT. WAITING ROOM - COURTHOUSE - EARLY AFTERNOON
JANE jerks awake.
