OBJECTS AND AIMS
The objects and aims of this Sisterhood shall be general
improvement, which shall comprehend, more especially,
the following points:
To seek growth in charity toward all with whom we
associate and a just comprehension of, and adherence to,
the qualities of Faith, Love, Purity, Justice, and Truth.
To seek growth in knowledge and in culture, and to obtain
all possible wisdom from nature, art, books, study, and
society, and to radiate all light possible by conversation,
by writing and by the right exercise of any talent we
possess. To aim at self-control, equipoise and symmetry
of character, and temperance in opinions, speech, and
habits.
It shall be the chief duty of each member to consider
thoughtfully the full import of P.E.O. This will include a
sincere regard for our influence in the community, a
careful consideration of feeling when speaking, and a
determination to do all we can at all times, and under all
circumstances, to express a loving concern for each sister.

PROJECTS OF THE P.E.O. SISTERHOOD
The P.E.O. Sisterhood Maintains Six Educational Projects
P.E.O. Educational Loan Fund Educational Loan Fund (ELF), established in 1907, makes loans
available to qualified women who desire higher education and are in
need of financial assistance. A student must be recommended by a local
chapter of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and be within two years of completing
her course of study.
P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship (IPS) Fund was established in
1949 to provide scholarships for international women students to pursue
graduate study in the United States and Canada.
P.E.O. Program for Continuing Education P.E.O. Program for Continuing Education (PCE) was established in
1973 to provide need-based grants to women in the United States and
Canada whose education has been interrupted and who find it necessary
to return to school to support themselves and/or their families.
P.E.O. Scholar Award P.E.O. SCHOLAR AWARD was established in 1991 to provide
substantial awards to women of the United States and Canada who are
pursuing advanced degrees or are engaged in advanced study and
research.
Cottey College Cottey College is a fully accredited liberal arts college for women at
Nevada, Missouri, owned and operated by the P.E.O. Sisterhood since
1927.
STAR STAR Scholarship, established in 2007, assists women who are high
school seniors to begin pursuit of a degree in higher education at an
accredited institution.

TENNESSEE STATE PROJECTS
HELEN HAYES HUTTON SCHOLARSHIP was established for
the purpose of granting scholarships to Tennessee women to attend
Cottey College.
CAROLYN G. WARD MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP was established
for the purpose of granting scholarships in music to Cottey College.
INEZ BAILEY SCHOLARSHIP FUND was established for the
purpose of granting scholarships to qualified Tennessee women for
graduate study.
LORETTA McCOIN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP was
established for the purpose of granting scholarships to qualified
women from Tennessee for their freshman year at an accredited four-
year college or university within the fifty United States.
BETH LEDBETTER PCE NAMED GRANT was established for
the purpose of awarding PCE grants annually to qualified women.

CHAPTER BY-LAWS
Article I Meetings
Section 1. The 12 regular meetings of Chapter AU shall be held on the second
Thursday of every month. The three social meetings will be held as listed in the
chapter yearbook.
Section 2. The program year shall begin at the June meeting.
Section 3. Meetings shall be held in the homes of members, unless otherwise
arranged by the hostess or the program committee.
Article II Finances
Section 1. The annual dues of Chapter AU shall be $53 for all members. This shall
include $26 for International Chapter, which includes $6 for Cottey College; $17 to
Tennessee State Chapter which includes: $2 for Tennessee State Travel Fund, $2 for
Convention Travel Fund, $1 for the Organizer Fund, and $12 for the Tennessee
General Fund. Local Chapter dues are $10, which includes fifty cents to the Oak
Ridge/Knoxville Reciprocity Fund.
Section 2. At the time annual dues are due, Chapters shall also pay $150.00 plus
$2.00 per active member to the State Convention Fund.
Section 3. All dues are payable after January 1, and delinquent March 1. As stated in
the Constitution of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, a member shall be termed inactive, and
shall forfeit all privileges of the Sisterhood upon failure to pay dues before March 1.
Section 4. Annual dues shall be waived for any sister for whom finances are a
hardship when her situation is brought to the attention of the chapter treasurer either
by the member or her representative. The member’s State/Provincial/District Chapter
and International Chapter dues shall be paid from the chapter treasury.
Article III Committees
Section 1. This Chapter shall have the following standing committees, appointed by
the President at the meeting following her election: Program, Social, Budget and
Finance, Courtesy and Caring, Projects, By-Laws and Parliamentarian, Telephone and
E-mail, Publicity, Nominating and Technology/Website (which includes two
subcommittees: Historian/Scrapbook & Yearbook/Handbook Committees). She may

appoint other committees as may be necessary to carry out the work of the chapter.
Section 2. Membership Committee shall consist of the Vice President acting as
chair and the Executive officers.
Section 3. The Vice President shall be chair of the Program Committee. The
Corresponding Secretary shall be chair of the Publicity Committee. The President
shall appoint chairs for all other standing committees.
Section 4. The number of members, duties, and chair of each committee shall be
as assigned by the President of the chapter.
Section 5. The President shall appoint an Auditing Committee in February to
consist of two members. They shall be responsible for auditing the Treasurer’s
books, after March 1st. The Committee shall make its report at the April meeting.
Article IV Nomination and Election of Officers
Section 1. Nominations for each office and for two convention delegates and their
alternates shall be submitted to the chapter by the Nominating Committee.
Section 2. The slate of officers shall be presented, elected and installed at the
March meeting. Nominations may be made from the floor.
Section 3. Election of officers shall be by written ballot; however, if the
Committee has made but one nomination for an office and there are no further
nominations from the floor for each office in sequence, by general consent the
ballot may be dispensed with and the vote for the ticket taken viva voce. If there
are nominations from the floor for one or more officers, separate election ballots
for each such office shall be taken.
Article V Amendments
Section 1. These By-Laws may be amended at any regular meeting of the chapter
by a two-thirds vote of those present, provided that the amendment has been
submitted in writing at the previous regular meeting.

STANDING RULES
1. The 12 regular meetings of Chapter AU will begin with a social time starting
at 9:15 AM followed by the program at 10:00 AM. The business meeting
will follow the program. The hour and day of the social meetings will be
listed in the Chapter Yearbook.
2. A member shall notify the Telephone and Email Chair by Tuesday
prior to the meeting of her intention to be present or not present at the
meeting.
3. Members shall be required to pay one dollar for birthdays and twenty-five
cents for failure to wear the P.E.O. pin at the meetings. This money shall be
used by the Courtesy and Caring Committee.
4. Monies collected for the “Good of the Chapter” will be distributed semi-
annually to one or more P.E.O. philanthropies as recommended by the
Budget and Finance Committee and approved by vote of the Chapter.
5. Excess funds in the Chapter Treasury, defined as funds over and above our
annual budget, will be distributed to one or more of our P.E.O.
philanthropies as recommended by our Budget and Finance Committee and
approved by vote of the Chapter.
6. The President shall make the decision to cancel a meeting for whatever
reason and will notify members through the Telephone/Email Committee.
7. In the event of a Chapter member’s death, Chapter AU shall contribute a
Memorial of $50 to a designated project. In the event of the death of a
Chapter member’s husband, child or parent, Chapter AU shall contribute a
memorial of $25 to a designated project.
8. A list of chapter members who are available to act as “initiation officers”
will be kept in the President’s box in the event an elected officer, for any
reason, is unable to take part in an initiation ceremony.
9. In recognition of their service to the Chapter, gifts will be presented to both
the incoming and the outgoing Presidents. On behalf of the Chapter, the
Treasurer will order a gavel guard for the incoming President and will make
a gift of $50 to the project of choice of the outgoing President.
