Chapter 9

Section 1

Standard 7.6.1:

Objective:

To learn that life during the Middle Ages in Europe was shaped by where people lived.

Topography = the shape and elevation of land in a region.

Southern Europe = Mountain ranges cover much of southern Europe

Northern Europe = flatter areas (plains), higher mountains and snowfields and glaciers

Climate and vegetation are very different from region to region.

Southern Europe Northwestern Europe

Far Northern Europe

Mostly warm & sunny

Mild, cooler, wetter

Very cold throughout the year

Southern Europe

People lived on coastal plains or in river valleys

Land was flat enough to farm

Crops = grapes & olives, also sheep & goats

Also lived near the coast = people were seafarers & traders

Northern Europe

Mostly lived farther from the sea

Used northern European rivers to access the ocean

Rivers = transportation ◦ Towns grew around the

river

Vegetation can grow there

Far Northern Europe/Scandinavia

Mountains and hills

The climate is very cold

Vegetation = very few plants able to survive

Use the outline map of Europe to identify the different regions within Europe.

Also identify the characteristics of each region.

Look at the 3 pictures on pgs. 232 & 233

Each picture depicts a different geographic region in Europe: ◦ Italy in southern Europe

◦ Germany in the Northern European Plain

◦ Norway in far Northern Europe/Scandinavia

You will be given one of the regions we learned about.

You will plan and create a newspaper that focuses on the geography and way of life for your specific region.

You need a minimum of 2 articles and 2 advertisements for your individual newspaper.
