Standard 7.6.1:
Objective:
To learn that life during the Middle Ages in Europe was shaped by where people lived.
Southern Europe = Mountain ranges cover much of southern Europe
Northern Europe = flatter areas (plains), higher mountains and snowfields and glaciers
Climate and vegetation are very different from region to region.

Mostly warm & sunny
Mild, cooler, wetter
Very cold throughout the year
Southern Europe
People lived on coastal plains or in river valleys
Land was flat enough to farm
Crops = grapes & olives, also sheep & goats
Also lived near the coast = people were seafarers & traders
Northern Europe
Mostly lived farther from the sea
Used northern European rivers to access the ocean
Rivers = transportation ◦ Towns grew around the
river
Vegetation can grow there
Far Northern Europe/Scandinavia
Mountains and hills
The climate is very cold
Vegetation = very few plants able to survive

Also identify the characteristics of each region.
Look at the 3 pictures on pgs. 232 & 233
Each picture depicts a different geographic region in Europe: ◦ Italy in southern Europe
◦ Germany in the Northern European Plain
◦ Norway in far Northern Europe/Scandinavia
You will be given one of the regions we learned about.
You will plan and create a newspaper that focuses on the geography and way of life for your specific region.
You need a minimum of 2 articles and 2 advertisements for your individual newspaper.
