in conjuction with what we learned in ch 8 this chapter will teach you

    how to test those instructions

Primary when you are directly engaged in the research, field research:

archeologist, anthropologist, finding gas prices, etc.

Secondary when you are engaging in research that others have conducted, looking

    at others published work

Limitations its important to know the limitations of your research but you must also

make sure that you obtain the information you need

Research primary research that assess the effectiveness of technical documents

Purpose to reengineer, refine, or revise technical documents (gauge how users

interact with product and whether they actually work)Limitations (cons of each test generally)

consider these questions when designing your user test:

    Who audience

How many people will you be testing?

How will you collect the information? And. Where will you conduct your test?

the kind of feedback you want will determine what types of tests you use

broader allows you to reach more test takers even within a l imited amount of time

quantitative yes/no questions (closed ended), demographic information: age,

gender, race, income levels, education level etc.qualitative open ended questions, aim: to have user provide some detail about

his/her experience (avoid asking Q with do/did and is/are since they are literally

asking for yes/no responses, if asked follow with why/why not)

pros/cons (pros) reach more testers, gather lots of basic info, (con) feedback not too

useful, more instructions on how to take survey than necessary

on a small scale can be effectively combined with observation/analysis test for more

    useful results

Notes while users are interacting with your instructions you can take observational

notes based on preset criteria, not preset questions, and also on other user behaviors

Analyze look for patterns of neg and pos behavior, think about how to change yourinstructions to get pos rather than neg behavior

    - neg behavior

    - pos behavior

Questions impromptu: nonpreset questions/ questions made up on the spot,

questions based on observational notes to elicit further info about behavior (for ex:

    ask pos/neg questions)

Pros/cons (pros) feedback from both you and user, (con) time consuming,

conducted on only a few users, interference can compromise results

only useful when paired with observation/analysis or post-test interview

Info basic info, can be geared towards users attitudes and behaviors,

Preset allows the creation of preset questions, questions related to product,

Pros/cons (pros) basic info (con) feedback not useful unless paired with

observation/analysis or post-test interview, feedback not about the usefulness of

    instructions

Interview interview test takers after instructions have been completed

Questions preset questions for all users, impromptu questions based on answers to

preset questions, carefully distinguish between open and close ended questionsPros/cons (pros) collecting immediate feedback from users, combines well with

pre-test interview or observation/analysis (cons) time consuming, limited test taker

can also use revision checklist from chap 3

Test basics who are you testing? what kinds of tests? When, date, time, etc.?

Where will test take place? Why do you want info/they taking test?

Methods specify what test you are using, describe how youre going to conductthe test, what questions youre going to ask (if any), and what kind of results you are

    looking for

Profile include in depth details why they are appropriate, why you chose them,

    and their background knowledge

Roles specific details about what your going to do

Recording what devices will you use to record info for both you and user

this might seem like a lot of work for nothing but it will make your user test better

which will in turn make your technical document that much better
