The Megalopolis Megalopolis
- based on the Greek meaning “a very large city”- coastal cities began to spread and run together.- the suburbs of one city stretched to the suburbs of the next- example: area from Boston to Washington D.C
The Megalopolis Cities along the Atlantic coast
- First, had harbors of international trade and centers of shipbuilding
As Manufacturing grew….- Industries needed workers- population began to grow
*people moved to factory towns to work industrial jobs*
The Megalopolis In the 1800’s- Europeans immigrated to
the United States- took advantage of jobs in the Northeast- escaped political oppression and economic hardships
The Megalopolis Advantages

Disadvantages- area might run short water- run short of facilities for waste disposal- higher taxes (decrease in population)
