Chapter 5 Section 1  Minoan 2,000 BC  Live on Crete Island  We don’t know a lot about them but…  Merchants and Sailors  Peaceful people - no walls or fortifications  Had to trade because of the poor soil  FRESCOE - paintings onto the wet plaster so it absorbs - last longer - shows advancement

Dorians

 Not long after the Trojan War, Mycenaean civilization collapsed.

 Dorians move in  Far less advanced  Lost art of writing!  No written records from 1150-750 BC  Little known about this time….

Ø Zeus - god of all gods Ø Athena - goddess of war -Protector of

wisdom - Athens named after her (Zeus daughter)

Ø Apollo - Zeus’s son- god of light, music, poetry

Ø Dionysus- god of fertility and wine

Chapter 5 Section 1 Pleasing gods was important

Ø showed strength and bravery through contest = Olympic Games

Ø First games held in 776 BC Ø Women couldn’t go or compete…. Ø Podcast “early Olympics”
