CHAPTER 3

RESEARC H METHODOLOGY

This chapter discusses the Research design and method that is used in this

study. The following topics are the research design, research locale, research

respondents and sampling procedures, research instrument, statistical treatment.

Research Design

1. The researchers have chosen a descriptive and quantitative type of

research. The researchers used descriptive and quantitative research in

order to gather sufficient and valuable data for the evaluation of the

physical assessment of Safety and health of the employees/workers of

Mindanao Container Terminal of Philippine Veterans Investment

Development Corporation

Research Locale

Mindanao Container Terminal, PHIVIDEC otherwise known as the “Tagoloan

International Seaport”, is a public owned & controlled corporation established in

1974 mandated by PD 538 of the Philippines which mandates to design a

government-owned and controlled corporation and to identify and develop sites

in the country as prospective industrial areas.  PIA will equip these areas with the

necessary infrastructures to encourage the inflow of domestic and foreign

investments.

This study was conducted inside the terminal premises, with the total population

of 117 workers on the month of February year 2009.

Respondents

The Respondents

of the study were the sixty workers of Mindanao Container Terminal, Philippine

Veterans Investment Development Corporation who were employed during the

month of February 2009. They were selected through the use of Slovin’s

Formula. They were taken from the department of the administration building and

of the departments of the terminal operations building identifiably the Port

Operations Division

Sampling Procedure

In the selection of the respondents, the following steps were followed: The

total number of the workers of Mindanao Container Terminal, Philippine Veterans

Investment Development Corporation was obtained from Mr. Gudufredo de

Guzman, Head of the Resource Management Division of Mindanao Container

Terminal, Philippine Veterans Investment Development Corporation of December

2008. The sample size was determined using the Slovin’s Formula. Random

Sampling was done for the workers of Mindanao Container Terminal, Philippine

Veterans Investment Development Corporation

To get the number of sample of the workers as the respondents, the simple

random sampling was used through the help of Mr. Gudufredo de Guzman, Head

of the Resource Management Division. The selection of the respondents was

done by random sampling to all the workers as respondents.

The permission to conduct the study was sought from the Head of the

Resource Management Division. Upon his approval, the assistance of the

employees of the company was extended.

The distribution and answering of the survey was determined by using the

Slovin’s method. The researchers briefly explained the purpose of study.

The researchers also requested the respondents to answer the question

honestly basing on their views on the Safety & Health status of Mindanao

Container Terminal, Philippine Veterans Investment Development Corporation.

After answering the questionnaire the researchers gathered all the data sheets

and thanked the respondents, Mr. Gudufredo de Guzman & the employees of the

Resource Management Division for their overwhelming cooperation.

Table 2 indicates the total number of employees employed during the month

of December 2008. The total number of employees is One Hundred seventeen

(117). With the calculation to get the number of respondents, Slovin’s Formula

with a percentage error of zero point zero nine (.09) or nine percent (9%). The

number of respondents as the solution showed portrays the total number of

respondents which is considered to be Sixty (60).

Research Instrument

The World Health Organization (WHO) formulated family nursing care plan

questionnaire & data sheets was adopted & the researchers used three different

parts. Part one deals with the Biological & Socio-cultural factors. Part two tackles

the environmental factors. Part three questions focus on respondent’s health &

medical history.

Statistical Treatment

The researchers used the descriptive and quantitative method, such as

percentages employed to describe the variables in this study. Also the

researchers used the randomly selected respondents to represent the total

population and collected through stratified random sampling.
