    Preparing for your Opportunity

Sometimes historians refer to the French and Indian War as the First WorldWar. Why do you think that is? Wars between the British and theFrench in Europe necessarily spilled over into America.(p 48) It issometimes known as a World War because 1) it was being fought on both sidesof the Atlantic, and 2) other than protecting their North American interests,Englandwas allied with other European countries in order to defeat King LouisXIV in France. If you even came close to that answer you received credit.

What factors led up to the French and Indian War? I wrote an example essay foryou in the document below. Of course I dont expect you to write what I did, especially not in 10 minutes, but there are a myriad of reasons/causes that I

would have given you credit for. Im always looking for understanding and Ialways want DETAILS not general statements! Words phrases that would havehelped you: land, Ohio River Valley (economics fur trading), Washingtonsassassination of Jumonville, Englands war with France in Europe, etc.

What were the keys to English victory? Again see above (details, understanding). There are other reasons I would have accepted but keyphrases: French had weakly protected forts and were trying to protect toomuch territory, French did not have a clear strategy (Louis vanity), thecolonists also had Indian allies (Iroquois) who played an important role thatmeant that the English soldiers and the colonists and the Iroquois were fightingthe French and their Indian allies, defined strategy (Pitts Quebec plan), Frenchhad problems with leadership (Governor Vaudreuil).

Why was it important to the development of America? Some acceptableanswers: secured needed territory, sowed seeds for later union, with theFrench defeated colonists did not need to rely on England heavily for defense, created a hero in George Washington,

The performance and attitudes of the British soldiers made an impression on thecolonial citizens. Be able to tell more about this. This referred to the passage atthe top of page 58.

How did the end of the French and Indian War change the relationship ofEngland and her colonies? British patriotism, love of William Pitt, a sharedcommon cause or vision (they were united by a common enemy), the colonistsfelt that had contributed to the interests of the British Empire, They expectedEngland to acknowledge their contributions.
