CHAPTER -15
TYPES OF HOUSES
House is a place where we live in safely.
It protects us from heat, rain and cold.
It also protects us from wild animals and thieves.
It is a building in which we all meet with basic things required for life.
It provides us with all safety and comfort.
There are different types of houses seen all over the world. These are of different shapes and
sizes. Some are small with just one room and some are big like a palace. Different materials
are used to build different houses.
Different kinds of houses:
There are various types of houses. In earlier times, human beings used to live in caves.
Kutcha Houses
These houses are made up of mud and straw.
These houses have thatched roofs. Thatched roofs are made up of straw and leaves of
palm trees.
Most of these houses are in the villages.
Poor people living together in huts are called slums.

Pucca Houses
These houses are made up of cement, wood, steel and tiles.
A one-storey house with a front porch is called a bungalow.
Multi-storey buildings with many floors are called apartments.
Houses in different places:
Different types of houses are built according to the climate of a place.

Ventilation in a house:
A house should have proper ventilation with many windows and doors.
Ventilators help in exchange of fresh air (in) and stale air (out).
Cleaning our home:
Houses should be kept neat and clean.
Availability of dustbins.
The bathrooms and toilet should be regularly cleaned with proper drainage system.
Accumulation and growth of pest should be checked and controlled on regular basis.
Regular use of pesticides and disinfectants should be done to keep the house safe
from pests and away from diseases.

MAPPING PLACES AROUND ME
Locating places:
Mapping: Locating people or places in a given space.
Direction:
There are basically four main directions as East, West, North and South.
The four directions help us to locate places on a map.
Reading a sketch:
Sketch: A pictorial chart of an area, drawn on a flat surface like a paper or a board.
It helps us locate places.
It does not show exact measurements.

Plan:
It is a map that shows a smaller area such as a room or a house.
Before construction of a house, the plan of that particular house has to be made as it helps in
proper construction and best utilization of space.
Map:
It helps us to locate places in a small area or any place in the world.
It should be drawn with exact measurements.
We start drawing a map from the centre point.
Certain colours and symbols are used to show the different features on the map.
