is extremely popular because it is the least expensive access technology.

• The Important Concept of Continuous Connectivity (Dedicated Circuit) – Usually higher-speed than dial-up – Instantaneous access and continous availablity (necessary for a

website to be available 24/7)

• Instantaneous Access Changes Use– A dedicated Internet connection that provides instantaneous

access 24/7 changes the way an individual views the Internet because it encourages frequent and casual use.

• Newer Technologies Offer Inexpensive Dedicated Access – Cable Modems (uses existing cable-TV wiring) -

shared cable – xDSL (Digital Subscriber Line) - uses existing phone

lines – Wireless - uses cell phone technology

• Terms– ISP – dedicated line (T-1, T-3) – dial-up access – cable modem – ADSL – wireless access technology
