Working in Space

• Scientists and public officials decided that one goal should be to build space shuttles and space stations where astronauts can live and work

Space Shuttles• Before 1983, spacecrafts could be

used only one– Space shuttle: a spacecraft that can carry a crew into orbit, return to Earth, and then be reused for the same purpose

• NASA has used space shuttles to perform many important tasks. These include taking satellites into orbit, repairing damaged satellites, and carry astronauts and equipment to and from space stations

• During a shuttle mission, astronauts live in a pressurized crew cabin at the front of the shuttle

• Behind crew cabins is the payload bay where supplies are stored– This might be a satellite that is to be released into orbit

or a place for astronauts to perform scientific experiments

• Six shuttles have been built, two have been destroyed during flight

Space Stations• Space Station: a large artificial satellite on which

people can live and work for long periods– A space station provides a place where long-term

observations and experiments can be carried out in space• The Soviets had a space station (Mir) in orbit for 15 years

• In the 1980s, the US and 15 other countries began planning the construction of the International Space Station– It was placed into orbit in 1998– On board, astronauts and scientists from many countries

are already carrying out experiments in various fields of science

– The space station has large batteries but is also powered by solar panels

Space Probes• Since the 1950s, when space travel began, only 24

people have traveled as far as the moon– Space probes: a spacecraft that carries scientific

instruments that can collect data, but has no human crew

How do probes work?• Each space probe has a power system to produce

electricity, a communication system to send and receive signals, and scientific instruments to collect data and perform experiments– Some probes are designed to land on a certain planet,

others are designed to fly by and collect data

• Some probes have small robots called rovers that move around on the surface– Rovers typically have instruments that collect and

analyze soil and rock samples

Exploring with Space Probes• Probes have visited or passed by all of the planets

plus many moons, asteroids and comets– The information gathered have helped to solve many of

the mysteries of the solar system
