• The nutrients that you get from food are called the

essential nutrients. The six classes of essential

nutrients are:

1. carbohydrates

2. fats

3. proteins

4. vitamins

5. minerals

6. water

Carbohydrates

• A carbohydrate is a chemical composed of one or

more simple sugars. Carbohydrates can be sugars

or starches.

• Sugars are found in foods such as fruit, honey,

table sugar, candy, and desserts.

• Starches are found in foods such as rice, pasta,

and bread.

• Proteins are nutrients that supply the body with

energy for building, maintaining, and repairing

tissues and cells.

• Proteins help the body break down and use

nutrients for energy. Proteins are also the building

blocks for muscles.
