Expressways

1. Controlled-access highways

2. Vehicles can enter and leave only at interchanges

3. Also include– Freeways– Turnpikes– Toll roads

Advantages of Expressways

• Fewer car crashes– No cross traffic– Median or barrier in the middle – No pedestrians and slow vehicles

allowed– Signs telling people what’s ahead– Wide shoulders

Interchanges

• A series of exit and entrance ramps onto the expressway

Complete the chart on page 3 in the packet.

Cloverleaf Interchange

• Allows driver to go in either direction on the highway

Diamond Interchanges

• Left turns can be made with ease onto the side road

• Not a lot of traffic on the side road

Trumpet Interchange

• Used when a side road forms a T with the expressway

All-Directional Interchange

• Used in complicated and busy interchanges

• They allow vehicles to go in many directions

How to drive safe on the expressway

• Prepare yourself and your car• Slowly build expressway

experience• Concentrate on driving• Cooperate with other drivers and

construction crews

Entering the expressway

Complete the bottom half of page 4 in the packet using page 225 in the

book.

Lane Choice • Right

– Slow lane– Many exit and

entrance ramps to stress about

• Middle – for passing and faster

traffic

• Left– for high speed traffic

and passing– Most stressful lane

because of aggressive drivers

Speed Limits

• Minimum speed limit - –Sign posted telling drivers the slowest

that they can go• Common Speed – 75%-80% of drivers

–The speed that most vehicles are traveling at

–Often above the speed limit

Wolf Packs

– A bunch of vehicles clumped together– Reduce your chances of being in a conflict by

AVOIDING WOLF PACKS. – Be the “loner” car

Draw and label a picture of a wolf pack and a “loner car” See page 231 in drive right book

Changing Lanes on the Expressway

Complete the table on page 6 of you packet (page 233 in drive right book)

Exiting the expressway

• Two main parts– Deceleration lane

• Slow your vehicle – Exiting ramp

• Ramp leading off of the expressway• Yellow speed limit sign

– Suggested speed to handle curve of ramp

• Highway hypnosis

• Falling asleep

• Disabled vehicles

• Tollbooths
