    The Problem

    Introduction

    Social media is an Internet site where people interact freely, sharing and discussing

    information about each other and their lives, using a multimedia of mix personal words, pictures,

    videos, and audio. At these web sites, individuals and groups create and exchange content and

    engage in person to person conversations. They appear in many forms including blogs and micro

    blogs, forums and message boards, social networks, wikis, virtual words, social bookmarking,

    tagging, and data, content, image and video sharing, pad cast portals and collective intelligence.1

    Social media started to rise since 1960s when CompuServe was launched as the first

    major commercial Internet Service Provider (ISP) for the public in the United States, which was

    followed by the first sending of e-mail in 1971. It continued its project until Tim Berners-Lee

    developed the World Wide Web (WWW). Blogging starts in 1997 and followed by the launching

    of Google as a major Internet search engine and index the following years. Friends reunited, the

    first social network to gain prominence, was founded in Great British in 1999. This success was

    followed by more major triumphs, launching of Friendster in 2002, which gained 3 million users

    in just 3 months. MySpace which surpassed Friendster in page views and in 2003, Facebook

    another social networking website in 2004. YouTube in 2005 and Twitter in 2006.

    Social media differentiates from traditional/industrial media in many aspects such as

    quality, reach, frequency, usability, immediacy and permanence. The internet usage effects of

    social media in the U.S. across PC and mobile devices increased by 37% to 121 billion minutes

    in July 2012 compared to 88 million minutes in July 2012 compared to 88 billion minutes in July

    2011.

    Year 2011, social media accessible from virtually anywhere and had become an integral

    of our daily lives with more than 550 million people on Facebook, 65 million tweets sent through

    Twitter each day and 2 billion views every day on YouTube. LinkedIn has 90 million

    professional users. Social media commerce was on the rise along with the mobile social media

    via smartphones and tablet computers. It was estimated Internet users would double by 2015 to a

    global total of some four billion users, a nearly 60% of Earths population.2According to a report

    by Nielsen, In the U.S. alone total minutes spent on social networking sites has increased nearly

    100 percent year-over-year, growing from 1.7 billion minutes in April 2008 to 13.9 billion in

    April 2009, making it the no. 1 social networking site for the month.1

    This statistics manifests that indeed social media had become a part of a typical

    individual. That is why this study would like to find out the possible effects are the users,

    especially on the students.

    Statement of the Problem

    This study is conceptualized to find out the effects of social media to the users, especially

    the fourth year students of Malabog National High School. Along with it, it would also answer

    the following questions:

    1. What is social media?

    2. How social media affects the values of the students?

    3. What are the effects of social media?

    Scope and Delimitation

    This study focused mainly on determining the possible effects of social media to fourth

    year students of Malabog National High School.

    This excludes the teachers, the personnel and the lower years from being the respondents

    on this study.

    Significance of the Study

    This study will be conceptualized to benefit the following:

    Students. The students of Malabog National High School especially the fourth year

    students will be benefited by this study. This will enlighten them to the effects of social media

    and how to cope with it.

    Parents. The parents will be helped by this study. This will guide them on how to deal

    with their children who are inclined in social media.

    Teachers. The teachers will be benefited by this research. This will help them to cope

    with their students behavior due to the effects of social media.

    Future Researchers. The future researchers will be guided by this study. This will help

    them to gain additional information about their topic in line with this.

    School Administrators. This study will also help the school administrators to determine

    on what area they have to give attention in terms of I.C.T. education.

    Community. This research will also guide the community in coping with the modernized

    lifestyle; especially nowadays that social media is upon us.
