Sir Charles Spencer "Charlie" Chaplin,

was an English comic actor, film director and

composer best known for his work during the

silent film era.

His working life in entertainment

spanned over 75 years, from his early

childhood, close to his death at 88 years.

THE KARNO TROUPE

Chaplin took part in many

different theatre plays but the

most important theatricalstage was the period while he

performed under The Karnotheatre troupe.

FIRSTFILM APPEARANCE

In late 1913, Chaplin's act with the KarnoTroupe was seen by Mack Sennett. Sennetthired him for his studio, the Keystone Film

Company. After Chaplin's first filmappearance, Making A Living was filmed,Sennett felt he had made a costly mistake.

Even so, Sennett was persuaded by one of hisassociates (Mabel Normand) to give Chaplin

another chance.

Chaplin writes in his autobiography that hewas asked by Sennett to get into a comedy

make up for the movie Kid auto races at

Venice.

manners, clothes, and dignity of a gentleman.Chaplin, with his Little Tramp character,quickly became the most popular star in

Sennett's company of players. He immediately

gained enormous popularity among cinemaaudiences. The Tramp, Chaplin's principalcharacter, was known as Charlot in the

French Speaking world, Italy, Spain, Andorra,

Portugal, Greece, Romania and Turkey,"Carlitos" in Brazil and Argentina, and "Der

Vagabund" in Germany.

JIM CARREY

James Eugene "Jim" Carrey is a Canadian-

American actor, comedian, singer and

writer. In 1979 Carrey started doing stand-up comedy at Yuk-Yuks in Toronto, where

he rose to become a headliner in February

1981, shortly after his 19th birthday. One

reviewer in the Toronto Star raved that

Carrey was "a genuine star coming to life."
