The carols by Peter Maxwell Davies and Judith Weir (KC1973) to be sung on this occasion were commissioned by the College forthe Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols in 1984 and 1985 respectively.Stravinsky’s Mass (1948), accompanied by a small orchestra, is the settingon the eve of Candlemas. The anthem on Shrove Tuesday is a settingwritten last year for Wells Cathedral Choir of Robert Herrick’s poem Tokeep a good Lent by Richard Baker, who is the new music fellow atKettle’s Yard and Trinity Hall. His predecessor, John Woolrich, wroteSpring in Winter for the 2001 carol service. On three of the Fridays inLent, extracts from Victoria’s Tenebrae Responsories will be sung. Thewhole of Psalm 119 will be recited during this penitential season, andchorales from Bach’s St John Passion will be used as introits. AlessandroScarlatti’s monumental setting of Stabat Mater for ten voices will beheard at Evensong on the last Sunday of term. Amongst this term’s organrecitalists are Robert Quinney, currently Assistant Master of Music atWestminster Cathedral, who was Organ Scholar from 1995 to 1998 andIan Hare, Organist at Lancaster University, Organ Scholar from 1968 to1971.
