Why Interfaith Dialogue Matters will be the topic when Bill Tammeus, award-winning former columnist with the Kansas City Star, is featured at Breakfast Club Sunday morning, December 13 at the Lamar campus. Beginning as a reporter at the Star, Tammeus spent almost 30 years writing the Starbeams column for the paper and serving on its editorial board, and

from 2004-2008 wrote regularly for the Faith section. His work has been syndicated by both the New York Times News Service and Knight Ridder/Tribune Information Services.

Most recently, Tammeus has received a great deal of favorable publicity for a book he co-authored with Rabbi Jacques Cukierkorn of the New Reform Temple entitled “They Were Just People: Stories of Rescue in Poland During the Holocaust” which was published this year by the University of Missouri Press.

Breakfast Club mornings begin with Shacharit at 8:30 a.m. followed by breakfast at 9:15 a.m. The presentation will begin at 9:45 a.m. in Goldsmith Hall. Please RSVP to Stef Williams at [email protected] or 913-647-7292. Breakfast Club is sponsored by the Dr. David Ellis Memorial Fund.

Rabbi Stein & Claire Langer atSukkot LaMishpachah

History is a form of revelation. Chanukah is a perfect example.According to 2 Maccabees 10:3, 5-8, which ironically is a book of the Christian bible,

but not our own, the story goes like this:

After purifying the temple, they made a new altar. Then, with fire struck from flint, they offered sacrifice for the first time in two years, burned incense, and lighted lamps… On the…twenty-fifth of the same month Kislev, the purification of the temple took place. The Jews celebrated joyfully for eight days as on Sukkot, remembering how, a little while before, they had spent Sukkot living like wild animals in caves on the mountains. Carrying rods

entwined with leaves, green branches and palms, they sang hymns of grateful praise to Him who had brought about the purification of His own Place. By public edict and decree they prescribed that the whole Jewish nation should celebrate these days every year.

In the wake of victory in war, our ancestors looked to our biblical festivals for inspiration, creating a new commemoration to last the ages. This was the first Chanukah.

And yet the Rabbis of the Talmud did not focus on the military victory of Chanukah, or on the biblical origin of its pattern of 8 days. Instead, recording centuries after the events in question, they gave us the story of the miraculous cruse of oil. The rabbis remind us that God is a part of the miracle.

In Rabbinic Judaism, it is that very act of “Chanukah – dedication” – and

not the moment of victory – which produces the miracle of God’s favor. It was not Judah Maccabee beating the Greeks, it was his rededication of the Temple that merited the persistence of the oil which in turn enlightens the dark of history and war. The Rabbinic tradition shows us that it is our response to history, not history itself, which invites miracles.

History is a form of revelation, and religion’s purpose is to describe a world of miracles which transcends what we can see. The Conservative movement is dedicated to the combination of both: sacred myth & sacred reality.

May the light of Chanukah be a rededication for you and your family.

It normally doesn’t affect my relationship with my non-Jewish friends. Sometimes if I want to hang out, they will have family in town a different time than I do so that gets

The holidays in December don’t affect my relationship with my non-Jewish friends. We are all understanding of each others’ religions and beliefs. It is a great time for the community to come together and help out the less fortunate. It does not matter what religion you are, you can still help out your community or those who have less than you.

In my opinion, the holiday season is my favorite time of the year. Besides the fact that there is great food, presents and for some, decorations, it’s also a great time of year because the three major

holidays are all so closely connected. In its own unique way, each holiday is commemorating a major part of their religion. Christmas celebrates the birth of Christ, Chanukah celebrates the victory of the Maccabees and Kwanzaa celebrates African culture. During this time, everyone has a reason to celebrate. We can all have our own unique holidays that in some way intertwine.

KCUSY members were asked to respond to the following seasonal issues. Every year in December, people of many faiths celebrate a variety of holidays. How does this December Dilemma affect your relationships with your non-Jewish friends? What are some ways you have come together with the community at large, while still holding on to the traditions of our faith?

During this time, I love to talk with my non-Jewish friends about the holiday season. We teach each other the customs and stories behind our respective holidays. These interfaith discussions help me better understand “what all the fuss is about” behind Christmas. My hope this holiday season is that everyone can share in the same great learning experiences.

Many years ago, there were no programs where Jewish children were able to learn Hebrew and Torah. They mainly learned this information from their parents. In about the year 64, a high priest named Joshua ben Gamla made it a law that every community had to open a school for its children.

In our time, the rabbis and educators thought it would be a good idea to begin formal Jewish schooling with a ceremony, and this ceremony became Consecration. Kindergarten students attending the Polsky Religious School and the Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy celebrate Consecration as a community. This will take place Saturday, December 12, 6:45 p.m. at the Wornall campus. The program will include Havdalah, the lighting of the Chanukiah (Chanukah menorah,) songs, a Torah story and gifts for each of our kindergarten students. A reception, planned by our parents’ committee, will immediately follow the program.

Surrounding the winter solstice, we celebrate Chanukah – the Festival of Lights, an eight-day holiday commemorating the rededication of the Temple at the time of the Maccabean Revolt in the 2nd century before the common era. And Christians celebrate Christmas, the birth of Jesus whom Christianity considers the Son of God.

The season presents an unique opportunity to teach about our faith. Under the heading Messianic Hope, Emet Ve-Emunah: Statement of Principles of Conservative Judaism (1988), addresses the messianic view – the age to come:

• For the world community, we dream of an age when warfare will be abolished, when justice and compassion will be axioms of interpersonal and international relationships . . . .

• For our people, we dream of the ingathering of all Jews to Zion where we can again be masters of our own destiny and express our distinctive genius in every area of our national life.

• For the individual human being, we affirm that death does not mean extinction and oblivion. This conviction is articulated in our tradition in the two doctrines of the bodily resurrection of the dead and the continuing existence, after death and through eternity, of the individual soul.

As we move through this holiday season, Jews can educate Christians in some of Judaism’s precepts, rituals and traditions, and Jews can be educated in those of Christianity. And all of us -- Jews and Christians alike -- can share in family time integral to this season.

e xe c u t i v e l y s p e a k i n gThe 1st Century sage Rabban Gamaliel is credited for saying, Provide yourself with a teacher, and thus remove yourself from doubt. Beth Shalom has always been a congregation of learners, blessed with exceptional rabbis and educators. Adult learning continues to be one of the

congregation’s highest priorities. Our adult education chair Vivien Scholzman has developed a broad and exciting variety of adult educational programming. This year we have already had the pleasure of Rabbi Margolies’ lecture series The Three Affairs (the final session has been changed to Wednesday, December 2, 8 p.m., Wornall) and our clergy teaching during the Elul Institute. I humbly suggest you consider attending the following adult education opportunities: Hazzan Menes will teach a five-session trope course for adults to either learn or perfect their Torah and Haftarah reading skills beginning on Thursday, January 7. For those of you who work or live downtown, Rabbi Tobin is teaching a monthly lunch hour Mishnah class. Please

Find Yourself a Teachercontact Jill Goldstein in the ritual office for details. On Thursday mornings at the Lamar campus Rabbi Tobin and Rabbi Stein continue their 2nd semester teaching of the Sarah Peltzman classes. Rabbi Tobin will teach about the Book of Proverbs and Rabbi Stein’s sessions will cover the “Five Scrolls.” Rabbi Stein will continue to teach a class on the weekly Torah parashah on the first and third Shabbatot at 9 a.m. in the Katz Chapel. Hazzan Menes will conduct a class on “How to Lead a Seder” on Thursday, March 11, 7:30 p.m. at the Lamar campus.

There will be plenty of learning opportunities during the Kaplan/Sisterhood Weekend, January 29-31 when we welcome Dr. Barry Holtz, the Dean of the Davidson School of Education at JTS. I do hope that you will take advantage of these and many other educational opportunities and be reminded of the Talmudic admonition “A man who studies on his own is no match for one who studies with a teacher” -Tractate Ketubbot

December will begin with a wonderful concert, Jim Cosgrove, Mr. Stinky Feet. The children love him! Chanukah will be our next topic in the classrooms. The children will make presents for their parents, design their own chanukiah, play dreidel and create several Chanukah projects!

RFNS will celebrate Chanukah, Festival of Lights on Friday, Dec. 11 with Chanukah and Shabbat songs and a story read by Rabbi Tobin. Each family is invited to bring a chanukiah so we can light the candles together. With over 100 chanukiot shining in the room, Goldsmith Hall will be a Festival of Lights. Everyone is welcome. You do not have to be a preschooler or have a preschool child to come and join this celebration. Join us for Chanukah LaMishpachah on Wednesday, Dec. 16, 6:30 p.m. See page 2 for details. Our last day of school before winter break will be Friday, Dec. 18. Classes will resume Monday, Jan. 4, 2010. Have a great winter break!
