SCIENCE TREK: THE SPECIAL Idaho Public Television’s favorite local children’s show steps into prime time during Festival. For almost 20 years, Science Trek has inspired elementary-age students to learn about science. In Science Trek “The Special” (March 8 at 8:30 PM), host Joan Cartan-Hansen shares some of her favorite video shorts from the series. The special repeats on Family Fun Afternoon, March 12 at 4:30/3:30 PM.Learn how the traveling dinosaur, Sue the T. rex, is put together; discover how Idaho scientists are trying to save the state’s bats; explore the International Space Station mock-up where astronauts train; and much more. The show also features special guests who stop by to explain why science education is so important, including Star Gazers host James Albury and Dr. Nick Siegler, chief technologist for NASA’s Exoplanet Exploration Program.

OUTDOOR IDAHO: WHERE THE ROAD ENDSMost Idaho roads connect to another, and another, but what about the roads that essentially end? The Outdoor Idaho crew brings home stories from some of Idaho’s out-of-the-way places in an hourlong special, “Where the Road Ends” (March 9 at 8:00 PM).Cameras discover a place called Paradise high in the Selway Wilderness; Bay View, a small town perched on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille; Big Creek, a community so remote that an airplane is the best way in; 150-year-old Joyce Ranch on the Owyhee Front; the restored Mormon ghost town of Chesterfield; Atlanta, where freedom of expression is revered; and Castle Peak, a mountain in wilderness, where no roads are allowed.

DIALOGUE: TREEFORT MUSIC FESTBoise’s Treefort Music Fest, which began in 2012, now features more than 400 bands and nine “subforts” — including Yogafort, Storyfort and Hackfort — during the five-day festival. In 2016, an estimated 16,000 people attended. This year’s Treefort begins on March 22.In “Treefort Music Fest” (March 10 at 7:30 PM), an extended Festival edition of Dialogue, host Marcia Franklin talks with Eric Gilbert and Lori Shandro Oüten, two of the founders of Treefort Music Fest, to learn more about the event, including why they started it, how it’s changed since its inception, and what its goals are for the future. The episode features footage from the 2016 Treefort.

Are you in third to fifth grade? Do you like the thought of extracting DNA from a strawberry, exploding a flash-frozen gummy bear, or taking apart a real computer? How about sleeping in a museum next to a fossil of a saber-toothed tiger with 120 fellow science enthusiasts? You should sign up for the Science Trek overnight camp at the Idaho Museum of Natural History in Pocatello, April 28-29. Space is limited. Sign up now! This is a breathtaking journey through 200,000 years of history, from the origins, on the African continent, of art, writing and civilization itself, through the millennia in which Africa and Africans shaped not only their own rich civilizations, but also the wider world. Stream it free @ video.idahoptv.org.

American Experience Commemorates

100th Anniversary of World War I

Drawing on the latest research, including unpublished diaries, memoirs and letters, a new six-hour miniseries from American Experience, “The Great War” tells the rich and complex story of World War I through the voices of nurses, journalists, aviators and the American troops who came to be known as “doughboys.” The series explores the experiences of African-American and Latino soldiers, suffragists, Native-American “code talkers” and others whose participation in the war to “make the world safe for democracy” has been largely forgotten. “The Great War” also explores how a brilliant PR man bolstered support for the war in a country hesitant to put lives on the line for a foreign conflict; how President Woodrow Wilson steered the nation through three-and-a-half years of neutrality, only to reluctantly lead America into the bloodiest conflict the world had ever seen, thereby transforming the United States into a dominant player on the international stage; and how the ardent patriotism and determination to support America’s crusade for liberty abroad led to one of the most oppressive crackdowns on civil liberties at home in American history. It is also a story of little-known heroism and sacrifice (including the deadliest battle in American history) that would leave more than 53,000 men dead on the battlefield and more than 60,000 dead from disease. American fatalities would come at a critical time in the war, but they would be dwarfed by a cataclysm of violence that would ultimately claim 15 million lives. “The Great War” airs over three consecutive nights beginning Monday, April 10. And that is my pick for next month.

Happy 154th Birthday, Idaho!

Mark your calendars and light the birthday candles because on March 4 Idaho turns 154. That’s the date in 1863 on which Abraham Lincoln signed the proclamation to make Idaho a territory. This year’s public celebrations will be held on Friday, March 3. They’re organized by multiple state agencies, including IdahoPTV, under the great supervision of the Idaho State Historical Society. Former legislator Linden Bateman (Idaho Falls) founded the day, which has been celebrated for several years across the state in schools and at the Capitol. If you can make it to this year’s festivities at the Capitol, you are invited to attend events live in the House or Senate chambers and at noon in the rotunda. If you can’t make it to the Capitol, you can watch events online at Idaho in Session (idahoptv.org/insession). Watch events in the House and Senate chambers prior to noon. Then at noon/11:00 AM MT/PT, catch streaming coverage of the event in the rotunda. Watch a proclamation given by Lt. Governor Brad Little, speeches, and performances from local children. If you can’t watch it online, no worries. IdahoPTV will also broadcast the festivities from the House and Senate as they happen, over the air on our Learn/Create and World Channels. And as always, social media is another way to engage and show your Idaho spirit (#myidaho #beautifulidaho #idabeauty).Join us for a great birthday celebration ... Idaho style.
