Today, some Lodges have replaced the beaver with cherubim while many lodges still proudly display the lowly beaver, i.e., Massachusetts and others. Generally speaking if a devise was on the coat of arms of a state, family, organization or other, it was of great significance and importance to that organization. The trivia question is what is the significance of the beaver to Free- masonry and why would it be so im- portant to appear on the coat of arms and seal of lodges. You can find the answer in the June issue of Fraternal Review magazine from the Southern California Research Lodge. Masons do not need to be members of SCRL to receive the publications. From the Lodge Leadership

As we celebrate our 300th anni-versary, I thought it would be interesting to take a brief look at, what I think is, some interesting trivia. That being, the beaver in Masonic history. It appears on the coat of arms of Operative Masonic Lodges in the distant history. Today, some Lodges have replaced the beaver with cherubim while many lodges still proudly display the lowly beaver, i.e., Massachusetts and others. Generally speaking if a devise was on the coat of arms of a state, family, organization or other, it was of great significance and importance to that organization. Take for example, the coat of arms (seal) of the operative stone ma-sons of 1472

and the premier Grand Lodge of Eng-land (Moderns) of 1723.

The trivia question is what is the significance of the beaver to Free-masonry and why would it be so im-portant to appear on the coat of arms and seal of lodges. You can find the answer in the June issue of Fraternal Review magazine from the Southern California Research Lodge. Masons do not need to be members of SCRL to receive the publications. Simply join as a subscriber, at a reduced rate, and you have access to a great amount of Masonic information, history and re-search. www.theresearchlodge.org/. Please excuse my stumbling attempt to point out the value and availability of Masonic research and articles at SCRL. If you can not find the answer to the question, ask me and I will tell you what the Fraternal Re-view author wrote about the beaver. And finally, below, we see the current coat of arms of the California Grand Lodge. While the angels remain the beavers have appropriately been replaced by the bear.
