Since coming to Government, we have made improvements in each of these important areas, all aiming at increasing the levels of engagement, retention and attainment for students. We have passed a new Education Act for Tasmania, which for the first time recognises the right of every child to receive 13 years of compulsory education. As well as providing the opportunity for voluntary six months earlier access to Prep and Kindergarten, the new Act raises the expectation of our young people, that they remain at school until the completion of Year 12, its equivalent, or when they turn 18 years of age, whichever comes first. The centrepiece of our change agenda is the extension of Tasmanian schools to Year 12. Reducing the number of transitions our young people experience lies at the heart of this policy, because it provides more choice about where they can complete their senior secondary education. This is about our colleges and high schools working together with the shared aim of ensuring more students finish Year 12. For many young people barriers such as changing schools, travel and finance can impact on their ability to complete their education. So, by extending high schools to Year 12, we help remove that barrier, and with it the perception for many in the community that schooling finishes at Year 10. I am encouraged by the strong community support of the high school extension program. As of 2018, 38 government schools will be extending to Year 12 — a significantly higher number than expected. As Minister for Education, I want more students to stay at school longer, enjoy their schooling experience, and achieve more while they attend school. GUILFORD YoungCollege turns 25 nextyear. As Tasmania’s

only senior secondary coeducational Catholic college approaches this milestone, it has a reputation for dynamism, educational excellence and outstanding pastoral care, with facilities to match on its two campuses.

In 2016, 83 per cent of GYCstudents achieved their Tasmanian Certificate of Education and 60 per cent achieved an Australian Tertiary Admissions Ranking.

Also, 14 per cent achievedan ATAR of over 90, and three students were in the top 100 students in the state.

Within the field of Vocational Training and Education, 41 of last year’s students have gained apprenticeships and a further 15 are employed in an industry related to the VET program they studied.

Last year GYC had three finalists in two categories in the Tasmanian VET Training

Awards, producing two winners, while two other VET students won TASC Outstanding Achievement in Vocational Education and Training Awards.

This year, 20 per cent of thestudent population is enrolled in VET courses.

As well as providing exceptional academic and vocational pathways accessible to all 950 students,

the College offers extensive co-curricular activities that provide learning and growth opportunities through sport, cultural, leadership and spiritual pursuits.

A leader in the Tasmanianeducation community, GYC welcomes all who come through its doors into a community of faith.

Guilford Young College was founded in 1994 by the

Archdiocese of Hobart in co-operation with the Christian Brothers, the Dominican Sisters, the Silesians of Don Bosco, the Sisters of Charity and the Sisters of St Joseph. Its first students attended in 1995.

This year, the College haswelcomed only its third principal.

Craig Deayton, who has been a principal in the Tasmanian Catholic education

system for 20 years, said that one of the pleasures of being at GYC was working with vibrant and highly motivated students.

“Guilford Young College both supports and nurtures young people on the cusp of adulthood, helping them to develop a personal ethical framework that includes self-confidence and self-knowledge, as well as knowledge of the world in

which they live and their place in it,” Mr Deayton said.

“One of our many joys is working with these vivacious young people, helping them reach their full potential, and opening the door of opportunity for all. We are extremely proud of the fine young citizens who are alumni of Guilford Young College, and we look forward to welcoming your son or daughter in 2018.”

THE Hutchins School isleading the way forlearning with its Year 9

program, Power of 9. The program, which began

in 2011, is aimed at encouraging and assisting students to develop the skills, passion, positive attitudes, values and forms of knowledgenecessary for planning their pathway and being successful through Years 10, 11 and 12 and beyond.

Students have the opportunity to choose from four different challenges that include the Global Challenge, the Port Davey Challenge, the Central Australian Challenge and the Island Challenge.

Each challenge occurs at adifferent time during the year and consists of two phases that include “the experience’’ and “the expedition’’ that makes

up the ultimate challenge. Power of 9 co-ordinator

Ken Kingston said the experiential learning program focuses on developing skills, including decision-making, resilience, tolerance of others, personal organisation, persistence, self-confidence, leadership and independence.

“We try to involve the students in learning experiences that they wouldn’t get in normal day-to-day schooling,” Mr Kingston said.

“These include the four major challenges where students are learning off-campus, and in some cases quite challenging environments.

“For the preparation camp,students are required to make their own way back to Hobart from South Port, which challenges them to get out of

their comfort zone.” He said a combination of

learning through self-discovery, adventure and relevant curriculum helps turn boys into fine young men and build character through experiential learning.

use their experience to teach one another.

Recently, Year 9 girls participated in the Outdoor Adventure Skills elective, where they mentored the Year 4 girls throughout some bushwalks to Seven Mile Beach and Snug Falls.

The girls are further askedto challenge themselves through an outdoor educational experience based on Tasmania’s East Coast.

From Year 5 onwards, girlsexperience the Kelvedon Classroom, Fahan’s outdoor

education facility where they apply skills in setting up their own camp, cooking and undertaking a full curriculum experience in the outdoors, including history, English, art, science and maths.

“We offer the girls skills inoutdoor education that they can build on throughout their years at Fahan,’’ Dan said.

“By the time they reach Year 10, they will be even moreskilled, independent, resilient and surprise themselves with what they can achieve.”

The students love the

variety and quality of outdoor education activities.

Year 7 student Anna Kennedy said: “Kayaking with the class and our bushwalk to the top of Mount Wellington were great opportunities to push ourselves and test our limits. We all really enjoyed it.”

Year 4 student CharlotteCrawford said: “I loved the bushwalk to Seven Mile Beach and the sand sculpture competition we had. It was great having the Year 9 girls with us on the walks explaining things.”

FAHAN School pridesitself on maintaining avibrant culture of

The Outdoor Education Program at Fahan provides rewarding and exciting opportunities for the girls to participate in activities that

Girls experience mountainbiking, kayaking, canoeing, white-water rafting, indoor and outdoor rock climbing, bushwalking, and low and high rope challenges.

In each activity, the difficulty levels increase and grow as the girls do.

CALVIN Christian Schoolprovides personalisedlearning through its

Pathways Program.With a long history of

outdoor education, Calvin is building the pathway for this program to equip students with industry-recognised qualifications in the eco-adventure industry.

The program begins at Year10 by building students’ basic skills in kayaking, rock climbing, snorkelling, rafting, bushwalking, rescue and first aid.

Leadership development isthe focus of Year 11 studies.

The aim to be an inspiringand empowering learning community was represented at the annual Achievement Ceremony, when the college celebrated more than 90 award recipients from their 2016 cohort.

The major awards for thenight were presented to Harry Nutting (the B.A. Hortle Award for Academic Achievement), Georgia Stone (the Long Tong Leadership Award), Leuan Simms (the K.R. Hudspeth Award for Service), Olivia Wilson (the Caltex Best All-Rounder Award) and Annie Zagni (the Principal’s Citizenship Award).

Several students also represented Rosny with awards at a recent ceremony at Government House to recognise Outstanding

Academic Achievement and Outstanding Achievement in a Vocational Education and Training Program.

Rosny College is very proudof its record of excellence as students continue to achieve outstanding results year after year in their chosen pathway.

Last year the school saw asignificant increase compared with 2015 in the number of students achieving their

Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE), as well as 37 students with an ATAR above 90, and three students placed in the top 100 for the state.

The college is a supportivelearning environment that aims to support all their students to achieve the TCE at the end of Year 12 so they can successfully participate in further studies or employment after they leave school.

ST ALOYSIUS CatholicCollege leads the way inTasmania with the Duke

of Edinburgh Award. The internationally

recognised award is the leading structured youth development program for young Australians aged 14-25, helping them to explore their potential, regardless of age or circumstance.

Duke students at St Aloysius have the opportunity to participate in surfing, rock climbing, bushwalking, canyoning, bike riding and snow camps in Victoria.

“It has been a remarkableexperience, broadening both my life experience and skill base,” said Grade 10 student Mitchell Owen.

The program, which startedin 2014, has grown rapidly,

with the College now having five senior classes enrolled in the award this year.

There are three levels to theprogram: Bronze, Silver and Gold.

St Aloysius offers both Bronze and Silver, with Guilford Young College offering Gold in 2018.

REGULAR exercise does morethan keep you fit.

That’s the message to studentsat Elizabeth College, where physical activity is taken seriously and options are available to suit everyone’s needs.

“Exercise improves memory and higher-order thinking, as well as self-esteem and mental health. That’s why we try to have something for everyone,” Health and Physical Education department manager Rebecca Thomas said.

At lunchtime students can try a quickworkout at Chuggy’s Gym, the colleges’ high-spec strength and conditioning facility.

They can use the spin room or join insocial games of volleyball, basketball, floor hockey, badminton or futsal.

After school they can get involved with the huge range of active Enrichment offerings, from snowboarding to surfing and bike riding to bowling.

Alongside these offerings there are college sports and activities such as AFL 9s, fun runs and athletics.

Students certainly notice the difference this physical activity can have on their academic studies.

“Keeping active really helps me to feelgood about myself and I know that my learning improves too,’’ said Year 12 student Cooper Wilson.

“I can stay focused for longer, and thatreally helped in exams last year.”

Any student can get involved, and there are high levels of participation across the college.

Healthy body, healthy mind

FIGHTING FIT: Students at Elizabeth College are taught the importance of regular exercise, and there are plenty of different fitness options.

BEK Dilger first started playing music at Clarence High School with the primary bands program in Grade 5.

She joined the high school band in Grade 7 and now in Grade 12 she is still playing with the band.

At the moment the Senior Concert Band is practising regularly to ensure they are ready for the 2017 National Band Championships.

For the championships the band has been joined by a number of college students.

The commitment to excellencein the Clarence school band program has resulted in outstanding achievements in competitions.

“I love being part of the band

program. It’s a big family and we all enjoy making great music,” said Bek, who now studies at Rosny College.

Bek is an experienced percussionist and is mentoring this section of the school band.

The Clarence High School Bands Program encompasses five bands and numerous ensembles.

Students work with specialistinstrumentalists individually and in small groups. There are music camps, tours, competitions and performance opportunities as part of the program.

Acting Principal Mary Maher isenthusiastic about the opportunities for students at Clarence High School.

“Students come to us in Grade7 and we work together to

discover what they love doing and then enable them to grow and extend their skills,” Ms Maher said.

“It is gratifying to see studentsgo on to college and excel in their area of passion.”

Gus Roberts and Koda Salterstarted in Grade 7 this year. They had already visited Clarence High School numerous times from their primary schools as part of the Primary School Bands Program, Science Week activities, to attend the Computing Club, and then again as part of the transition program.

Koda thought that the Computing Club, especially for primary students, was really interesting.

“We learnt how robots workand then got to make our own and

make them dance or play soccer,” he said.

Gus has quickly become a keymember of the Junior Concert Band, playing baritone saxophone.

He said he most looks forwardto new studying opportunities, from Robotics to Outdoor Education to Computer Graphics.

The 2017 National Band Championships are on Easter Saturday in the Albert Hall, Launceston. Everyone is welcome to come along and cheer the Clarence team.

THIS year, more than 80Hobart College students have

volunteered for the Student Environment Team (SET).

Their first big mission wasClean Up Hobart College Day.

Held on a hot summer day,student teams led by SET members scoured the college’s 65 hectares of bushland finding old truck parts, household furniture, couches, beds, piles of cans and bottles, and household waste.

Veolia donated a skip for the day, which was easily filled by the energetic scavengers.

The SET also manages the

campus recycling program, collecting the commingled rubbish and recycling bins fortnightly.

Its next challenge is to collect 6000 1.25-litre PET drink bottles to build a productive greenhouse near the Sustainability Centre.

Perhaps the SET’s most exciting project is mobilising to help save the Tasmanian swift parrot. Learning about its predator, the rainbow lorikeet, will provide a critical real-world challenge for the student team, who are very fortunate to be working closely with ANU conservation biologist,

Dr Dejan Stojanovic, on their Fair Go for Swifties citizen science project.

Dr Stojanovic will train theSET team members to be effective citizen scientists, working towards a paper on the collaborative results gained from the student/citizen scientist research.

Hobart College has been awarded two grants to help with the Fair Go for Swifties Unwanted Rainbow Lorikeets Project.

The largest, from NaturalResource Management South, provides $7000 to assist with building more than 50

rainbow lorikeet nesting boxes and developing data bases and technology equipment to make accurate field observations.

The college’s InformationTechnology students will be devising a database to be used by the SET members and other citizen scientists.

Local community memberscan join in the project by undertaking two workshops with Dr Stojanovic to be held on May 20 and 27.

DOMINIC College hasresponded to increased student

interest in studying Marine Biology, Veterinary Science and Environmental Sciences at university with a new foundation science elective.

Dominic College Directorof Science K-10, Jane Myers, has developed the new Animal Husbandry and Marine Science course for Year 9 and 10 students that has proved popular with two classes studying the subject this year.

“In the Animal Husbandrycomponent of the course, students gain an understanding of the classification, anatomy, physiology behaviour and ethical care of a variety of animal species,” Ms Myers said.

The College has bought oris caretaker for a range of animals, including alpacas, sheep, calves, donkeys, goats and an already much-loved pony.

Students are working hardto research and care for their

animals. To great excitement, the college’s Toggenburg goat, Kelly, gave birth to a baby girl last month.

“It was very well-timed. Students observed me delivering the baby in the college stables,” Ms Myers said.

Nearly all students have their portfolio animal living at the college. As well as the larger animals, students study and maintain rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, homing pigeons and chickens.

Ms Myers said animal diversity, the humane treatment of animals, and endangered species are some of the topics covered in the course.

“Students are also looking forward to term two,when the focus will be on the marine habitat culminating in a five-day Marine Studies Immersion Camp,” she said.

Dominic College Principal Beth Gilligan said the college was able to develop facilities on its extensive grounds to support

this highly engaging new program for students.

“We plan to prepare and enter some of our animals in the Royal Hobart Show, which will be a unique learning opportunity for students,” Ms Gilligan said.

She said the college had areputation for producing fine marine and environmental research scientists,”

“We hope Dominic College old scholars such as Dr Karen Westwood and Dr Joanna Vince can also connect with and support students in this program,” Ms Gilligan said.

students have every reason to feel confident about embarking on university study after receiving top marks from the University of Tasmania politics unit while still at Claremont College.

“The UTAS Politics/Law course was daunting at first, but it gave me a head-start in understanding how university works” said Porsha Archer, who is enrolled in a Bachelor of Psychological Science at UTAS.

“My favourite part of thecourse was international law,

as it was something I previously did not know much about.

“Meeting the lecturers inthe seminars was also good because you could actually speak to them, rather than be one of 200 in a lecture theatre.”

Emily Hale, who is studying a Bachelor of Arts/Law degree this year, recommends the course and said it helped her to achieve a very strong result in Legal Studies 3, as well as the obvious benefit of having a lighter load in her first year at UTAS.

“I think that the course gave us really valuable skills that we can apply to everyday life,” said Grace Lawless.

“For example, in my nursing degree this year we are looking at communication and how some cases can be used as a precedent to influence health-related law.”

On reflection, Rachael Davis, who is enrolled in a Batchelor of Art/Law degree at UTAS, credits the course with helping her to develop a mindset that will put her in good stead throughout her studies.

“I found that the course

helped me to understand that, while I may not agree with certain decisions made by governments, it is important to remain open-minded and unbiased,” she said.

Claremont College students have participated in this course since its inception, and this tradition is being upheld by two Legal Studies 3 students this year.

It will demystify tertiary study for them, just as it has for Claremont College students in the past.

The college offers a rangeof UTAS College courses for students in Years 11 and 12.
