My earliest London memory is of my parents taking me to all the usual tourist things when I was eight: Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace and the V&A [right]. I loved the hustle and bustle and learning the history of all of the buildings.I vividly remember going to the London Dungeon. I enjoyed it so much that I went again with my parents 15 years later, when they came down from Yorkshire to see me in Be My Baby at the Pleasance Theatre. It was very nostalgic to go back!
The first West End show I saw was Les Misérables when I was 13. I’d just gone to stage school in Berkshire. Anne, the woman I boarded with, took me one night and booked a box to make it really special. There was a standing ovation at the end and I burst into tears because I’d never experienced anything like it.The Southbank and the Tube are great for people-watching. I love London’s department stores – Harrods, Selfridges, Harvey Nichols. It’s the thought
We occasionally filmed Downton Abbey in London.
I did a day on location near the Strand. A large
crowd gathered to watch and the street looked beautiful because it had been dressed for the period. We also filmed all of the interior downstairs scenes at Ealing Studios in west London, so that became like home.

Where to head if you have seven, 12 or 24 hours in the city
Taiwanese restaurant from the team behind Bao, and play mahjong in between your beef shortrib and bone marrow pancakes (xulondon.com). Then wander to Maison Assouline – the bookshop will host a Pierre Cardin pop-up store in October, in honour of the designer’s retrospective (assouline.com). Stop at Karl Lagerfeld’s Regent Street store to see his first women’s jewellery collection – complete with Swarovski crystals, studs and chains (karl.com). Then watch a thrilling performance of Jekyll and Hyde with an all-female cast at the Ambassadors Theatre (theambassadorstheatre.co.uk), before dining at Simpson’s in the Strand. An old haunt of Sir Winston Churchill’s, it has just reopened after a major refurbishment, but the restaurant still serves its roast rib of beef tableside from the original 1848 carving trolleys (simpsonsinthestrand.co.uk).
12 hours...Start at the Southbank Centre with an artisan breakfast hosted by Swedish chef Lena Flaten at The Great Nordic Feast, then catch a talk at the London Literature Festival. The stellar line up includes Philip Pullman, Annie Leibovitz and Tom Hanks, who will read from his first collection of fiction (southbankcentre.co.uk). Try to book one of the panelled private dining rooms at Xu, a
Clothes (tessapackard.com). After that, indulge in the tasting menu and a glass of orange wine at the recently launched Italian restaurant Rigo’ in Parsons Green. The spaghettoni dei fiori – served with a sprinkling of yeast – will make you rethink your entire approach to pasta (rigolondon.com). As day turns to night, watch Japanese aerialist Satchie Noro perform on top of a 40-foot shipping container by Battersea Power Station for the opening of the Dance
Umbrella festival (danceumbrella.co.uk). Then ring the doorbell at Pharmacy in Chiswick. Behind the musty-looking shopfront is a 1920s-style bar and restaurant, the new opening from Evans & Peel (evansand peel.com), the duo behind the Detective Agency in Earls Court.

Make your way to South Kensington for The Science Museum’s Illuminating India, which celebrates the country’s technological contributions with a series of exhibitions and events. Our pick is a talk by Moumita Dutta, who led the pioneering Mangalyaan Mars Orbiter Mission (sciencemuseum.org.uk). Then visit the new Tessa Packard showroom nearby to see her latest jewellery collection, Emperor’s New

of all the people who have walked through the doors over the years. There are so many beautiful hotels in London. The Langham is in a great location opposite the BBC. The Corinthia is stunning inside and I love the old school feel of Claridge’s. The Savoy is very atmospheric and has the oldest electric lift in London. Stepping into it feels like stepping back in time.Joanne Froggatt stars in ITV’s Liar on Mondays at 9pm in the UK (also on itv.com and sundance.tv).

Perk up with a coffee at TAB x TAB on Westbourne Grove, a new café that partners with local artisans to continually redress its interior (tabxtab.com). Then head to Merchant Square to take yourself on a tour around Little Venice with GoBoat – the first and only self-drive boats in London (goboat.co.uk). Motor through Regent’s Park to see if you can catch a glimpse of the London Zoo animals from the canal, then moor up for a brunch of cornflake French
toast and a Bloody Maria (a Bloody Mary with tequila) at Egg Break (eggbreak.com). Hit the shops at Connaught Village, Hyde Park’s luxury retail quarter, where newly opened Kindare offers custom tailoring and artists Rob and Nick Carter have opened a studio and viewing space, RNat5A (connaught-village.co.uk). Then settle down to beef carpaccio at The Clifton in St John’s Wood – the historic tavern where King Edward VII used to have clandestine meetings
with his mistress (thecliftonnw8.com). Rather than a more conventional hotel, stay in a serviced apartment at Europa House and enjoy a drink under the willow trees in your private, three-acre garden square (living-rooms.co.uk). The next day, head to Unfold: Art in the City of Tomorrow – a meditative exhibition of 20 contemporary artists on Church
Street (subjectmatterart.com), before lunching on Indian tapas at the newly-opened Lokhandwala. Take enough people so that you have an excuse to order every dish and don’t miss the dosa cone. (lokhandwala.co.uk).
