In the Lloyd District of Portland, one can see how the automobile has transformed American cities. As the district has many large surface parking lots, multiple highways that run through it, and highly traveled roadways; it has created a district that lacks a pedestrian connection and a positive district identity. For my thesis project I proposed to create a Center for Dance that will act as a social catalyst to draw residents and visitors into a sustainable Ecodistrict living. Through my project I explored how the Center can foster a welcoming green community with healthy lifestyles that contribute to a lively district identity focused on recreation and entertainment.

Creating a Center for Dance will link the Rose Quarter to the Convention Center and enrich the art and culture offerings in a prominent Lloyd District site. The Center is broken up into two theaters, that both provide different functions, one that is formal and one that is experimental. In addition the Center will also provide a series of educational studios and classrooms. Within theses spaces there will be classes offered throughout the day for people of all ages. To further enhance social interaction on the site there will also be a café, a restaurant, landscaped entry plazas, and outdoor performance spaces. By providing a variety of Center activities it will attract users to inhabit the site throughout the day.

The locals of Junction City, Oregon have expected a large growth rate within their community in the next twenty years. As there current facilities are too small for their current and expected growth we were each asked within the studio to design a civic center that would include a new library, community center, city hall, senior center, and police station on a site that currently housed the library and the community center. Within the project we identified the current conditions of the site to create an efficient program that corresponded with the locals needs and could offer growth in the future. What made the site unique and special was one of the cities landmarks, the water tower, located on the site.

As the water tower is an identifying landmark to the community I wanted the Civic Center to wrap around it to allow people to gravitate towards the site. The program is arranged to have transparent glass entry points to allow users to have clear access to the independent parts of the building and to see the community garden from the entry plaza. In addition using local materials I wanted the Center to have a civic presence, but still be open to the community garden and landscape features that also wrap around the water tower.

Located on a rural site in Tapalpa, Mexico the program called for hotel and suites to compliment an existing country club that is just east of the site. In addition the program also called for a restaurant, a pool, a spa, and a gym to accompany the hotel and suites.

While the majority of the users of the hotel and suites would be visitors from the nearby cities, the woody site served as my inspiration for the design of the hotel and suites. I wanted the program to form around the contours of the site to capture the amazing views of the golf course below. In addition I also wanted to provide each user with a different experience when visiting the site. Therefore each room is design and organized in a way that allows the users to connect with the site in a different way. Also, as there is a disconnect between the local culture and the luxury hotel and suites I wanted to balance these elements by using local building materials and practices.

The design process first started with the making of a conceptual model. The model encompasses the idea of merging culture and nature into a building that uses native building materials. The model also conveys the idea of how culture can reach and intertwine in nature.CHANEL N. HORN

The Central East side of Portland was historically known for its light industry and food services that provided blue-collar jobs for residents within the neighborhood and its surroundings. Through the years major industries and services have relocated from the core of the city to industrial parks as the cities have tried to provide a cleaner, quieter, and more livable city.

The project focused on the idea of real and fantasy as it integrated light industry, food service, offices, and artisan live/work spaces on a superblock. As the site was once an urban pasture I was inspired to take the idea of how traditional farming can be produced in an urban setting through vertical farming.

Given the descriptive word “Pull” I was asked to design a storage system that could be duplicated and would guide the behavior of the user. My design objectives for this project was to attain basic wood working skills in addition to creating a system that changes from two-dimensional to three-dimensional by the human interaction of pulling.

Using inspiration from a special necklace that was given to me, I created a two-dimensional pattern that could be translated into a modular storage system. Using a vacuum bag and traditional woodworking tools, I created three separate pieces that could be put together in many different ways based on the users needs. The storage system uses tension to be placed between the ceiling and floor to hold display pieces or even books and magazines. In addition the storage system could be placed along a wall as well as act as a divider between two spaces.
