The next big moveWhen I arrived in New Albany over the summer, I found a campus ready and poised for its next big move. I found people who were dedicated, spirited and, frankly, impressive. And I found opportunity: to engage in meaningful community relationships and to build new ones; to build and shape our academic programs to the needs and demands of the region; and to spread the word about all the great things happening at IU Southeast—to eradicate “the best kept secret” and “hidden gem” talk.

This is a wonderful campus with much to be proud of, and I am honored to serve as Chancellor. I am honored to work alongside our inspiring faculty, staff, students and alumni. I am honored to work with the donors who continue to support our campus and propel us forward. And I am honored to present you with the IU Southeast 2013-14 Annual Report, which highlights just a few of these extraordinary people and the impact they have on the story of our campus and community.

The IU Southeast School of Nursing has seen steady growth over the past several years, something Dean Jacquelyn Reid attributes to a growing demand for healthcare. IU Southeast is training well-prepared nurses who are ready to meet the demands of the region, but not just in the traditional classroom setting. Students are getting hands-on experience in state-of-the-art simulation labs.

The campus already had one nursing skills lab, but not nearly enough equipment or resources for each student to be involved. With nearly three students sharing each mannequin, Reid knew the existing lab was in need of more space, more equipment and more current technologies. And that’s exactly what she got.

Local couple Judge Carlton and Sue Sanders recognized the need and stepped in to “make the best even better.” Their generous half-million dollar gift supported renovations to the existing lab and added additional workspaces. The lab now has three high-fidelity simulation rooms: an adult simulation lab; a pediatric simulation lab; and a birthing simulation room. The existing skills lab, where students practice basic nursing techniques, was also expanded to house 12 mid-level simulation mannequins.

Students now have access to equipment that makes simulations more challenging and realistic, like bedside computer charting. Through role-playing and videotaped simulations, students are able to practice and evaluate their performance in a variety of routine and emergency situations. Reid is thrilled by the investment and is grateful for the Sanders’ support.

Sean Marguet is a senior chemistry major from Greenville, Ind., and a first–generation college student. He originally planned to study music theory in college—having enjoyed playing trumpet and guitar—but changed course after taking chemistry in high school. But when it came to selecting a college, Marguet saw IU Southeast as the obvious choice. Not only would he be able to stay close to his family, but also he was impressed by the one-on-one attention students received.

In his time on campus, Marguet has excelled in both the academic and extracurricular arenas. When he is not studying or working in the campus laboratory, Marguet spends his time leading the IU Southeast chemistry club as president, working as a teaching and laboratory assistant, and staying active by cycling and participating in water sports. He is also busy in the community, volunteering at National Chemistry Week, where he led mini–science experiments to introduce grade school students to chemistry.

His involvement was noticed, and Marguet was one of eight IU Southeast students to receive the Chancellor’s Medallion Scholarship in 2014. Paired with another scholarship, he will graduate debt-free with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and an associate degree in mathematics and physics. Marguet hopes to continue on to graduate school where he plans to pursue a doctorate in physical chemistry.

Psychology professor Deborah Finkel is not interested in the ordinary, as either a researcher or a teacher. In her field of behavioral genetics, she focuses on what makes individuals different. Leaning heavily on mathematics and synthesizing research on cognition and development, she teases out the complex interrelationships of nature and nurture, genes and acquired behavior in the cognitive abilities of aging twins. For over two decades her work has taken her to Sweden, Australia and elsewhere—including to the top of her field. As a teacher, Finkel is not interested in average universities. For her, IU Southeast offers the best of two worlds: a place of true scholarship on par with any other institution, large enough to offer top-tier opportunities for students but small enough to permit them to be taught by professors rather than graduate assistants. This is a crucial appeal for teachers like Finkel who value the undergraduate experience and derive professional satisfaction from the chance to make a difference in the lives of undergraduates and graduates. As director of the Masters of Liberal Studies program and president of the Association for Graduate Liberal Arts programs, Finkel is also heavily invested in boosting IU Southeast’s reputation for advanced scholarship through the creation of unique, flexible and individualized graduate programs. In Finkel’s view, this heightens the university’s professional profile and enables it to make a distinctive contribution to the development of the region.

Linking culture and communityAs director of the Paul W. Ogle Cultural and Community Center, Kirk Randolph is a busy man. Thankfully, he has an incredible staff and lots of energy to keep him going throughout the events that permeate the largest performance venue in Southern Indiana.

Until this year, Randolph oversaw the happenings of three Ogle Center venue spaces: the Richard K. Stem Concert Hall, the Robinson Theater, and the Millicent and Norman Stiefler Recital Hall. Now, a fourth venue will be added to his list: the Horseshoe Foundation of Floyd County Amphitheater, an outdoor venue. Randolph was overwhelmed by the “incredible generosity” of the Horseshoe Foundation of Floyd County, who funded the project to improve the quality of life for the community and campus. The permanent facility will enable Randolph to expand offerings to include summer concerts, outdoor theatrical performances and student and community events.

Randolph and his team also recently welcomed a new permanent collection of regional art to the Ogle Center. Donated by Kathy Russell Smith and her husband Don Smith of Floyds Knobs, Ind., the James L. Russell Wonderland Way Collection features works by local artists who met in a New Albany art shop owned by Kathy Smith’s grandfather. Randolph beamed as the first 10 pieces were installed outside the Ogle Center Box Office—more than 40 more still to come.

“Through the Smiths’ generosity, the Collection preserves the history and heritage of the art of our region,” Randolph said. “The Smiths’ lifetime of passion for the arts and their incredible gift opens many new chapters in the IU Southeast story.”

Outworking the oppositionAthletic Director, Joe Glover, does a lot with a little. Away from the bright lights and big money of ESPN, the Grenadier-in-Chief has gathered a passionate and dedicated group of coaches and student athletes, inspiring them with a simple ethic of outworking the opposition. Under Glover’s leadership, IU Southeast won the coveted KIAC Commissioner’s All-Sports Cup in 2013-14, has been recognized as the conference’s Best Overall Athletic Department and featured two Coaches of the Year.

For Glover, the story of IU Southeast is told in part through the lives and accomplishments of student athletes who excel in the classroom while pushing themselves on the hardwoods, playing fields and tennis courts. Motivated to be team players, many find a home in the local community after graduation, contributing their spirit and energy to improving our collective quality of life. In a sports-crazed region, Grenadier athletics help tell the community about IU Southeast in a way that’s engaging and fun. Glover estimates that half the fans filling the stands at any given game are locals without ties to campus, strengthening IU Southeast’s bond with the region. Two years ago, he launched the Champions Dinner to celebrate exemplary athletic alumni and raise money for scholarships, and created the Champions Club to spur further engagement. But the biggest win for Glover will always be getting to know these special students and watching them play out the motto, “Work hard—No excuses.”

Providing a sense of belongingAs director of the Center for Mentoring at IU Southeast for more than 20 years, June Huggins leads a small office that has a big impact. Mentoring tells the story of the campus in very concrete ways. Mentored students at IU Southeast are twice as likely to graduate as those who go it alone. Beyond the numbers, mentoring helps a large conglomerate of individuals and departments become a community with a single purpose, connecting faculty and staff directly to the students who are the institution’s focus, while providing students with a sense of belonging. Under Huggins’ leadership, the mentoring program at IU Southeast now brings more than 130 volunteers together with more than 300 students in a formal, structured process. Huggins is excited about the explosion of mentoring nationally and on the IU Southeast campus. She is pleased to see the program return to local schools through activities such as the New Albany Bulldogs Scholars Program, which helps bring college-prep know-how to high school students. She is also proud of the growth in peer mentoring through the Access to Success Program, and the popular Collegiate Summer Institute, which jump-starts the transition to college for minority, first-generation, Twenty-First Century Scholars, and adult learners. No matter how digitized our relationships become, Huggins believes there will always be a need for mentors—the more experienced person helping the lesser experienced among us—providing a connection on a direct one-to-one level. “People need people,” she says.

Way beyond a piece of paperChris Morris is not your typical student. After dedicating 21 years to serving our country in the Army, he retired and came home to New Albany expecting to slip back into the private sector job market. Coming from a time when a high school diploma could secure a good job, Morris soon realized he needed to return to school, thinking he would quickly earn a “piece of paper” and get to work.

IU Southeast appealed most to Morris because of the friendly and helpful attitude of the faculty and staff and the “genuine concern for the students” that was evident. And he didn’t waste any time. Morris got involved in academics and campus life. He earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in writing, and is currently pursuing a second bachelor’s degree in general studies with a minor in sociology.

Morris has traveled to Ghana twice with IU Southeast to perform research, which he then presented at national conferences. He has also served as the editor of the campus’ Undergraduate Research Journal for four years, and has helped host writing boot camps at the campus’ Writing Center to help incoming freshmen transition to college-level writing. As the Veterans Special Projects Facilitator, Morris acts as a mentor to fellow veterans, helping them make the transition from the military to the academic arena.

Morris will graduate this year and hopes to use his education and personal experience to continue helping other veterans, particularly those dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Rachel Dalton is a senior elementary education and Spanish double major from Pekin, Ind. She initially attended Franklin College, a private liberal arts college in Franklin, Ind., then transferred to IU Southeast for her sophomore year. She quickly got involved on campus, joining the Student Education Association and becoming a peer mentor.

Dalton’s decision to double-major in Spanish and elementary education came naturally. An active member of Salem First Baptist Church, she has taken advantage of many opportunities to travel abroad, performing missionary work with companies like G.O. Ministries, where she translated in Spanish-speaking medical clinics and worked with children’s ministries. Dalton knew from an early age that she wanted to teach and saw Spanish as a vehicle that would help her reach and teach more people.

Outside of academics and her faith, Rachel is an avid runner, completing her first full marathon in 2014. She also coaches middle school cross-country, directs a 5K, works for Pacers and Racers Running and Walking Store in New Albany, and enjoys scrapbooking and service activities.

After graduation, Rachel hopes to begin teaching locally.

Navigating the human conditionIn the world of family law, command of relevant statutes is important, but so is a caring and respectful attitude toward all the participants in a dispute. Melanie Straw-Boone, class of ’91, strikes the balance in her Louisville-based firm, exemplifying IU core values of integrity and connectedness in the fair and considerate resolution of domestic conflicts. Straw-Boone is a homegrown success story. A Clarksville native who followed a cousin to IU Southeast, she was drawn more to its proximity and value than to any specific program. But soon she found herself captivated by top-notch history classes and became active in sorority life and intramural sports. A series of twists and turns led her to law school and a first job as an insurance defense attorney. A chance fill-in assignment in family law brought her to her calling. Beyond the demands for constant improvement in the law itself, it’s a richly varied field that brings her into contact with therapists, social workers, judges, accountants and others. Every case is unique, requiring a historian’s detective-like attention to detail and sensitivity to the human condition. Straw-Boone’s goal is to help clients navigate a difficult process with dignity, humanity and common sense. In a field noted for its intensity, she stays grounded in the command of her skills and a simple dedication to helping people avoid doing the kind of harm that can’t be undone.

Exploring the possibilitiesHonors Program Director, Professor Angela Salas, doesn’t guide a department; she oversees an entire paradigm. The customized Honors journey includes innovative interdisciplinary approaches to core topics, mentoring during and after graduation, and conference participation beginning in the freshman year, to name just a few unique attributes. Graduates are pursuing career paths as attorneys, nurses, medical students and technology directors who have been uniquely outfitted with the agility needed to succeed in today’s complex professional environment. What connects a cohort of students of all ages, backgrounds and life journeys—a constant focus on the individual goals of each student. In Salas’ words, Honors helps students become the best selves they can be, as they define it. This is no top-down, one-size-fits-all exercise in resume-building, but a deeply personal approach that yields extraordinary results through long-term projects, a cultivated exchange of ideas, and training in presentation —all of which prepare students not only for graduate school, but also for the rigors of professional leadership. It’s not free play, either, Salas observes, but an approach that encourages students to accept the structures of established inquiry and explore the possibilities within. The results are higher graduation and retention rates, placement in high-paying positions and the elevation of IU Southeast’s academic reputation.

They met in Sunday school during college, and when she recognized him on campus soon after, she recruited him for the Christian Student Fellowship. Rich Boling, a first-generation college graduate, has gone on to become a successful communications executive and distinguished alumni award winner. Dawn Boling majored in secondary education and quickly entered her dream profession. She currently teaches at Highland Hills, Indiana’s largest middle school, where she was a top–10 finalist for Teacher of the Year in Indiana.

At IU Southeast, Rich first came to appreciate “the power of a story to change the community and the world with one well–honed thought.” That insight made him a communicator for life. Inspired by journalism professor Jim St. Clair and communications professor James Kauffman, Rich came to master the storyteller’s art and took advantage of internships in TV, PR and community organizations, jump–starting what would become a career in public relations. Dawn’s story began even earlier when she was invited for a campus visit while in high school. That first impression—of a “spectacular” teaching program—only deepened during her time as an undergraduate and beyond, as the support and advocacy of faculty mentors continued well into her transition to working life. In today’s volatile teaching climate, she carries on that tradition by engaging our student-teachers whenever possible and is proud to see that IU Southeast continues to outfit the teachers of tomorrow with the skills they need to stay current and competitive. And for both Dawn and Rich, the fundamental story of IU Southeast hasn’t changed: “You get the feeling here that you can do anything.”

Teaching for the real-worldJoining the IU Southeast faculty in 2005, Associate Professor of management, Ken Harris, found a situation that teaching scholars dream about: an institution that thrives on the freedom of its academics to research what they think is important. In the past two years, his research into leadership, organizational politics and entitlement has appeared in the Journal of Social Psychology, Leadership Quarterly and other peer-reviewed publications, as well as local and regional online outlets such as InsideIndianaBusiness.com and national media ranging from BusinessnewsDaily.com to Forbes. In the classroom, Harris pushes beyond the textbooks to help students see management in the real world. “Management is everywhere,” he says, and reinforces this lesson through constant reference to actual situations in the workforce. Exposure to a broad range of management contexts—strategic and human resource management, leadership and ethics, organizational change and more—helps students develop skills they can use to better the community, their employers and themselves. Beyond the classroom, Harris works with a number of regional companies in training, leadership development and team-building and enjoys following the success of former students as they make their way in the working world, putting their education into practice in a real world they already know so much about. “Student success,” says Harris, “is the driving force behind all our actions.”

This year Amanda Stonecipher transitioned from a leadership role as director of Residence Life and Housing, where she had been heavily immersed in the lives of students, to a new position as Assistant Vice Chancellor of Retention and Student Services in the Office of Enrollment Management. Sound dry? It’s anything but. In her new role, she brings deep knowledge of real student stories to strategic discussions about the future of the campus. Stonecipher’s professional mantra involves helping students become appropriate advocates for themselves in the world. It starts with recognizing that the college experience goes beyond attending class. It’s also about expanding personal and academic horizons, be that through involvement in activities and campus organizations, or as a result of mentorship and the challenge of research. At the same time, college is a culture, with codes of conduct and mutual respect. It all feeds into that vague but important entity we know as “the right fit,” which is key to personal and professional growth—and to degree completion. As a first-generation college student, Stonecipher knew that higher education could be important, but it was only later that she fully appreciated the way it would impact her entire view of the world and life. For her, college and life inform one another in an unending circle of influence. Attending to that circle benefits the student and the institution.

Strategizing for the future

From his initial devotion to children’s ministry, to his work with Volunteers of America, and to his present position as annual fund manager at the Kentucky Science Museum in Louisville, IU Southeast alumnus Josh Kornberg excels at bringing together people and the causes that need their support.

His story at IU Southeast is one of discovery. A member of one of the first cohorts to enjoy the residential campus experience, he found more than he expected: a community as diverse and global as that of any large university. He threw himself into residence living, work-study opportunities, student government, Greek life, all in addition to pursuing academic excellence. Not bad for a young man who had vowed to limit himself to books. Here he came to embrace his true passion for involvement and to discover how it could work for him and for others. While at IU Southeast, Kornberg founded the Student Alumni Association, creating memories for future alumni through traditions like the Nearly Naked Mile, Homecoming and White Out. In a professional communications course, he discovered the essence of exerting a positive influence in the community through fundraising and organization. His present position at the Kentucky Science Museum gives him complete intellectual and creative freedom to design and manage giving campaigns, nearly tripling involvement in his first year. He hasn’t forgotten IU Southeast, bringing interns into his office to learn the workings of marketing and development in a real world setting.
