2017 Season v 3

The Atlanta of Leo Frankand Mary Phaganby Sophie Hall Cripe, Dramaturg

The city of Atlanta, where Parade is set, reached a half million in population in 1913. After the Civil War, the area moved rapidly from an agrarian to an industrial-based economy. Families were resettling from small towns and farms into the urban areasbecausewomenandchildrenwerefindingwork in factories to help the family survive. Some women were forced to work. At the same time, some women enjoyed the independence a paycheck provided.

Life in Atlanta was still simple and slow-paced. There was a thriving and somewhat assimilated Jewish community. Biscuits and gravy were staples. Movietheatersransilent“serial”filmsonweekends.Justice, law, and order were vastly different then. Dissatisfaction with local and federal court rulings resulted in people taking the law into their own hands and there were over 450 lynchings in Georgia from 1882 to 1930.

Folks got most of their news from local newspapers, which printed ‘extra’ editions for late-breaking stories. The murder of Mary Phagan and trial of Leo Frank was a media sensation. It gripped Atlanta and the entire nation for over two years. Newspaper reporters and editors increased interest in the story using “yellow journalism,” a sensational style of reporting that downplayed accuracy in favor of eye-catching headlines. Newspapers took sides and slanted their coverage to make Leo Frank look innocent or guilty. Many saw thecaseasacontinuationoftheconflictbetweenNorthandSouth;andothers used the story to play upon the fears and prejudices of a community, and to incite hateful actions.

The press coverage and sensationalism surrounding the Leo Frank case foreshadows the role of media in today’s era of Twitter, Facebook and instantaneous internet news coverage. It reminds us that, even as time and technology evolve, we must be alert to the media’s enduring power to polarize public opinion and to intensify feelings of bias and hate.

Please come back and bring your friends. As something of a “theater-holic,” I am serving my fourth year on the Board of the Chance;andIamTrusteeEmeritusatSouthCoast Rep. Can I entice you to becoming a more involved part of the Chance Theater? We have great fun here. Involvement feels like the best part of “being family”.

Rachelle Menaker & Eddie Schuller (Associate Producers) are long-time theater lovers, travelling frequently to partake in theater in various venues. They also love supporting local

theater, so in the summer of 2009, Eddie (not a musical lover) was a good sport to go along to the Chance production of Hair, a long-time Rachelle favorite. Wowed by the powerful Chance performance of Hair, they became Sustaining Members that night, and have grown increasingly enchanted with and committed to the Chance ever since. Rachelle began serving on the Chance Board in September of 2015, and has served as Vice Chair (or Chair of Vice, as she prefers) since January of 2017. They are delighted to be returning as Associate Producers for this summer’s Parade, and hope that the shows inspires us all to move towards transcending our tendency to judge anyone who is “other” than us and, instead, towards celebrating our differences.

Sarah DuVal (House Manager) Ten years ago my good friend Heather invited me to her theater to see I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change. Before the show even started, the actors started mingling and interacting

with the audience. Not entirely sure that it was part of the show, slightly panicked, I turned to Heather and asked if they were supposed to be doing that. She laughed and said yes. Two years later, I became a sustaining member and started helping building sets and hanging lights, which continued into 2014 when we opened our current space. Little did I know, at that time, that I had met a group of people that would soon become a second family. Ten years later, I’m super excited and proud to say that I’m the House Manger here at the Chance. Previous experience includes working in the ticketing department at SCFTA and workingintheChanceoffice.

When not volunteering her time at the Chance, “George” (as she’s lovingly known at the Chance) hands out caffeine drinks at Starbucks in Disneyland and California Adventure. Come by and say “hi” the next time you visit the happiest place on earth.
