History, Vision and Information - ABS Ontario Youth Basketball League

Starting in September 2012, nine core clubs in the GTA region formed the first youth basketball league in the area and largest in Canada. Club teams from Scarborough, Vaughan, Mississauga, Oakville, Durham, Kitchener-Waterloo, Blessed Sacrament (Hamilton), Toronto and Brampton came together for the inaugural season of the Amateur Basketball Syndicate (ABS) league. Many other clubs in the GTA were also involved. It was a tremendous success!

The goal of the league is to provide a place for young basketball players to play in a league format, which has never existed before in the GTA. Our vision is to keep costs as low as possible for these players, while providing some great competition and venues to play in. We also provide a “Show Up and Play” model. In this model, everything is taken care of from the refs to the score table personnel and even the roster completion of the score sheet. This is a non-profit endeavor which works in unison with the OBA and is supported by Basketball Canada.

Over the course of two seasons, the Amateur Basketball Syndicate has seen an incredible increase in the number of clubs, teams and players. The league has gone from 3 boys divisions (gr. 6, 7, 8 – 36 teams) to all boys division (gr. 3 to gr. 12) plus two girls divisions (gr. 8, 9). At this point, there are 135 teams and over 1500 players in the league. The league has grown almost 400% in one year of existence.

On our website (www.absbasketball.ca) the ABS provides standings, scores and stats which are updated after each game. The ABS Ontario Youth Basketball League also enables coaches to pick weekly winners based on predetermined categories such as rebounding, assists and court awareness. Winners of these awards are given free pizzas from Boston Pizza which is one of the main sponsors that the ABS has partnered with this year.

Along with Boston Pizza, the ABS has solidified sponsorships/partnerships with Gatorade, Wilson Athletics, Microsoft, Sheridan College, Bobby Allen, SpiderTech, Peel Board of Education, Transport Trailer Sales, Heart Starters, Appleby Pharmacy and more. We have had representatives from Canada Basketball and Ontario Basketball at ABS events and three local mayors were on hand for opening day tip-offs for various divisions.

Online Information

Each month the ABS Ontario Youth Basketball League draws interest from all around the World. With over 100 000 page visits each month, the ABS is now committed to putting full length games on the website (http://www.absbasketball.ca/stars/video.html#!/page_VIDEO) in order to better showcase the talent in Ontario. The ABS Facebook and Twitter pages include short video clips, game pictures, partner information and other important messages related to basketball in the ABS and Ontario.

Year End Scholarships and Awards

Aside from the on-court action the ABS Ontario Youth Basketball League believes in supporting the stakeholders who are involved in our game. Below is a list of some of the awards we are giving away this season:

Two Monetary Scholarships ($1000, $500) - via Transport Trailer Sales, Gatorade (for players graduating this year)

One financial award of $500 to the ABS Coach of the Year - via Gatorade (voted on by peers and then randomly drawn from the 11 divisions)

One financial award of $500 to the ABS Club of the Year – via Gatorade (picked by the ABS)

Player of the Year awards for each division – free 3 month training with Bobby Allen (picked by the ABS)
